Cosmonaut. Head of Security. Powerful psychic. Good dog. Cosmo the space dog has many hats he has worn, though not actual hats due to that helmet of his sort of making that difficult. How does a dog from Earth become a chief of security for a floating severed god head city with enough psychic power to knock out the Hulk? Let’s find out!
In the 1950s and 1960s, the space race between the USA and the USSR was in full effect. Whoever could get people into space and, more importantly, on the moon, would win in the eyes of the world. For the Soviet Union, this meant getting a life form into space and it was agreed upon on that dogs would be the best test subject for such experiments. Stray dogs were chosen since they were used to rough conditions and sitting around doing nothing for great lengths of time. While the first cosmonaut dog, Laika, was sent into space with no hopes of bringing her back to Earth, just forced to drift out in space for all eternity, all the cosmodogs after her were sent out with the intent to bring them back. Some were lost due to error so there are still several dogs among the stars.
Cosmo, was one of these dogs lost to the stars, maybe Laika, maybe one of the others. What is known about Cosmo was that cosmic rays mutated him to gain intelligence similar to humans and other alien life while also becoming a powerful psychic with telepathy and telekinesis. These abilities would help Cosmo make his way to Knowhere, the remains of an ancient Celestial’s head at the End of the Universe. Knowhere is a traveling hub for many space-faring folks since it can be used to transport you to nearly anywhere. Such a place required a strong defense and someone to maintain order so that everyone wasn’t fighting over such a commodity, Cosmo was the right dog for the job.
Now living and working at Knowhere, Cosmo would get to know many of universe’s heroes and threats. Teaming up with heroes to fight off dangers to Knowhere and the rest of existence. Heroes such as Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy. When galactic invasions became a massive war, Cosmo was there to aide and protect others. A good dog through and through. He may get lost from Knowhere from time to time but he tends to find friends along the way to help and help him.
There you have it! Cosmo is a good dog and he’s appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in a brief cameo and can even be found at Disney’s California Adventure theme park. Usually only the big names get to be seen at Disney theme parks but Cosmo is big deal, so it makes sense. Hopefully we’ll get more of Cosmo in future MCU films and television, he’s perfect for it since his telepathy means you don’t have to digitally give him a creepy moving mouth. See you next time!
