It’s a fast-paced story full of colorful cinematic layouts and equally colorful pirate characters. The pirates featured herein aren’t the sanitized scoundrels with a heart of gold, ala Disney’s Captain Jack Sparrow, but rather the violent, cruel, and arguably more fascinating characters from real history.

As a child, I loved the Pirates of the Caribbean ride as Disneyland, and I was always fascinated by the portraits of different pirate characters painted on the walls as guests entered the ride: Ned Low, Charles Gibbs, Sir Henry Mainwaring, Francis Verney, and, almost hidden unless you happened to look over your shoulder as you entered, two female characters, Anne Bonny and Mary Read. It was only later that I learned all of these characters, including the two women, were notorious historical pirates.

The first issue of A Man Among Ye jumps immediately into the action, featuring a battle between a pirate crew and English sailors and marines. The main characters of his battle are a striking red-headed woman, Anne Bonny, and her captain, John “Calico Jack” Rackham, both pirates, who violently wield pistol and cutlass as they lead their crew to take over the opposing ship and steal its treasure.

Cermak uses a variety of clever layout techniques throughout the issue, most notably during these opening scenes. The first page features no panels at all; the entire page is devoted to showing the two ships side-by-side, sails billowing in the wind while cannons fire at close range, and smoke pours skyward from the smaller English ship. While the ships are the main focus of this scene, by utilizing the entire page, Cernak is able to depict the wide expanse of the ocean surrounding the two vessels. It’s clear that the ships are alone out here on the sea, and no one will be coming to the rescue of the beleaguered English crew.

This opening shot is followed by a series of wide panels that span the width of the page, giving them an almost film-like quality that propels the action forward in a series of violent confrontations between the two crews. This is then followed by a hero shot of Anny Bonny, high above the action on the ship’s rigging, larger than life, pointing a pistol almost directly at the reader, with a huge grin on her face. She’s not only a capable pirate, sailor, and fighter, but she clearly loves it. By contrast, the panel that introduces the captain of the ship, John Rackham, is a wide shot featuring a variety of both pirates and English sailors dueling together. Rackham might be the captain, but the panel layouts show clearly that Bonny is the main character and hero (or, more appropriately, anti-hero) of the story.

Pezzillo’s coloring also deserves mention, which give Cermak’s art an almost painterly-like quality. The colors are bright, adding to the romanticized depiction piracy in the 1720’s, but the shading adds a huge amount of depth, and is almost exaggerated at times, adding a layer of foreboding to certain scenes. In particular, during the introduction of English governor of the Bahamas, Rogers, his face is often depicted half in shadow, but this technique is not used on any other character in this issue.

The remainder of the issue is mainly given over toward establishing broad-strokes character traits for Bonny, Rackham, and a few of the other crew members, setting up a future conflict Governor Rogers, and introducing a surprise character at the end who stows away on Rackham’s ship after swimming to safety following the burning and sinking of the English ship in the opening scenes. Things move fast during this past of the story, but that’s to be expected, as the main focus of the overall series would appear to be the partnership between Bonny and Read, and exploring the lives of these two infamous female pirates in a world and “career” dominated by men, most of whom viewed having a woman onboard ship to be bad luck.

While actual records do exist regarding both Bonny’s and Read’s time as pirates with Rackham, the records are scant, allowing Phillips leeway with depicting and embellishing the characters. Of note in A Man Among Ye is that the crew of Rackham’s ship all know Bonny is a woman, whereas most historical records seem to indicate she kept her sex hidden from everyone but Rackham. This change, while not necessarily historically accurate, does make for a better story, allowing Bonny to succeed and advance her career even though she’s the only woman aboard an all-male crew. Phillips portrays Bonny as smart, clever, and skilled, outwitting and outfighting several of Rackham’s less capable crew members who resent a woman giving them orders.

Historically, Bonny’s and Read’s time as pirates was successful, but quite short-lived. The opening scene of A Man Among Ye indicates that that the year is 1720; it was in either October or November of that same year that Rackham and his crew were attacked and defeated by a ship under the commission of the Governor of Jamaica. Rackham, Bonny, and Read were all captured and sentenced to hang, but Bonny and Read, due to “extenuating circumstances” were given a short reprieve. While Read’s fate is known, historically it is never reported what happened to Bonny after this point.

The first trade collection for this series has been solicited and contains the first four issues. It will be interesting to see after the first arc if the series continues and whether Phillips chooses to continue embellishing Bonny’s pirate career or sticks closer to the historical, and less fun, records.

A Man Among Ye is rated T+ and has some violent scenes, including a man being burned alive, and other men being shot in the head or stabbed with swords.

Martin Thomas
martin@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 08/14/19

Arnab

Arnab

BOOM! Hill is not making this easy for them and I’ll be here till the wheels fall off!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Really great character moments between Duke and Cass show why this could be a good title Given that Black Lightning’s creator has been negative about the book explains yet ANOTHER scene between Jefferson & Batman about who runs the team.

Batman Universe #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This previous Walmart-only exclusive is some of Bendis’ best DC work to date, and also some really good, non-grim Batman stories that are a breath of fresh air from the same old tired tropes we’re seeing in the main title. Very Silver Age in style.

Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice (Dark Horse/DC)
Infinite Speech: Okay, the first issue did the bare minimum of keeping me interested but I’ll admit this one was a much better issue.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. It is not common for me to laugh out loud while reading a comic, but that’s exactly what happened, causing me to scare the other folks at my local pub, while I read the Bizarro segment of this brilliant cross-over comic.

Catwoman #14 (DC)
Infinite Speech: How is this title not on everyone’s list?!

Detective Comics #1009 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. With a focus on the playboy aspect of Bruce Wayne, along with Alfred and Lucius Fox, there’s a lot of fun area here to explore that usually goes ignored by Rebirth’s more action-focused stories.

Event Leviathan #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. This is a bit hard to judge, because nothing much really happens here to advance the plot. It feels like filler, but the dialogue is quite well done without being too long, especially Plastic Man & Lois Lane, and Maleev’s art is great.

Flash #76 (DC)
Martin: A few members of the Flash Family make an appearance, but sadly they’re being written like the dysfunctional Bat Family, with angsty teenagers blaming their mentor for everything. However, the Black Flash scenes are intriguing, especially why he showed up.

Ironheart #9 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A good issue that cranked it up to full on great after Silhouette made her return! And with a sibling reveal for the icing on the cake!

Justice League Odyssey #12 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. End to a massive arc with a variety of creative teams. It’s cluttered, messy & without the impact it could’ve had. The best scenes involve Jessica Cruz, which just go to show how much better it could have been with more of a focus on her.

Life & Death of Toyo Harada #6 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Toyo Harada is one of the greats in comics. You’d do well to read this series immediately.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #9 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Saladin Ahmed is writing the $#@! out of this title so if you’re a Miles fan this should be on your pull list!

Once and Future #1 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. I’m a sucker for Athurian stories – tales of King Arthur & Camelot helped me develop an interest in comics & fantasy/SF. I wasn’t expecting much new from this, but I’m happy to be wrong. A dose of humor & a genre twist make this a great start!

Postal #2 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Returning to Eden has been the best thing that could have happened to my read pile.

Powers of X #2 (Marvel)
Arnab: I don’t know where this title is going and I dig it. Like, the future is dark af for mutants. And humans too, but they did that to themselves.
Infinite Speech: Nimrod is crazy. Apocalypse is ready to risk it all. And the future looks quite bleak for the mutants and humankind.

Wonder Woman #76 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A really well-done reunion issue that works on so many character levels, w/ a very strong “mother-daughter” theme running thru the issue. Diana’s & Hippolyta’s reunion is touching, but even more so is Diana’s desire to reunite Veronica with Isadore.

arnab@comicattack.net
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
martin@comicattack.net

Top Cow Returns to Eden in ‘Postal: Deliverance’!

InfiniteSpeech

Infinite Speech

Previews

Top Cow

Bryan Edward Hill

Eden

Laura Shiffron

Matt Hawkins

Postal

This summer we’re headed back to Eden in the follow-up to Top Cow’s hit series, POSTAL! I love the relationship between him and Jon and hopefully DC doesn’t screw it up anytime soon!
Martin: 2/5 stars. Sadly, this 12-issue series has lost me after this issue. I thoroughly enjoyed the predecessor title but this doesn’t capture any of the fun or the relationship between Damian & Jon. Rex Luthor is a 1-dimensional villain I don’t care about

Age of X-Man: Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: If it looks too good to be true it probably is and it looks like X-23 might be on the verge of finding out what’s wrong with this world.

Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The Avengers meet the new vampire leader and this is turning out to be one great arc from Aaron, Marquez, and Ponsor!

Batman #64 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is the type of crossover that we deserve as Batman and Flash have a mystery to uncover!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Start of a 4-issue Batman/Flash cross-over tied into Heroes in Crisis. Oddly, it’s only tangentially related to HiC. The focus is on a character missing from Rebirth Batman for nearly 2 years: Gotham Girl. I’m cautiously intrigued about where this is going.

Black [AF]: Devil’s Dye #2 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: Vita Ayala wrote some of the best dialogue I’ve seen in comics this week and I’m seeing this one till the end!

Daredevil #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I argued with myself on whether to pick up yet ANOTHER DD number 1. Well this was worth it because Zdarsky writes a great intro to DD’s foray back into Hell’s Kitchen. The back-up story was told in a unique way as well.
NickZ: It took a kick ass Netflix series & my love of Chip Zdarsky to get me to pick up my first ever Daredevil book and boy did it deliver! I am already in love with this take on the character and Checchetto’s art is perfect! Can’t wait to dive in deeper to Matt Murdock’s psyche!

Deathstroke #40 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Priest is giving us one top tier series in Deathstroke and you should have it in your read pile!

Die #3 (Image)
NickZ: If Gillen can give me feels like this over “throw-away” characters we just met, then we are really in for a treat as this series develops.

Female Furies #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Female Furies has a point to make and it’s done well with both story and art! Also, get you a friend that will help you bury the body.
Martin: 3/5 stars. The idea of a book focusing on the Furies of Apokalips is intriguing, but the execution in this 1st issue doesn’t quite hit the mark. Getting more background on Granny Goodness is fine, but making her a sympathetic character isn’t the way to do it.
NickZ: Granny and the Furies are fighting sexism on Apokolips? I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book, but this isn’t it. It’s even more awkward that it sounds.

Green Arrow #49 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A really different look at a superhero vs supervillain fight. Count Vertigo has a beef with Roy Harper, NOT Arsenal (or Speedy or Red Arrow or whatever he’s calling himself). His reaction when he learns he can’t exact revenge on Roy was unexpected.

Green Lantern #4 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Grant Morrison’s & Liam Sharp’s run so far has been pure science-fiction goodness, reminiscent of older Silver Age stories but with modern sensibilities. Sharp’s alien designs alone are worth the cover price. Tons of fun!

Justice League #17 (DC)
Infinite Speech: WHOA!! Snyder just dropped a huge bomb on us with a connection between Luthor and Martian Manhunter and it was perfect!
Martin: 4/5 stars. After so many big, epic-scale issues, things slow down to focus on an intimate character study of 2 characters who seldom interact together: J’onn J’onnz & Lex Luthor. The implications of their meeting have more impact than dozens of explosions.

Killmonger #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hill and Ferreyra are telling a story you want that has everything you’ve been asking for in a great comic!

Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Compared to Uncanny, the “Age of X-Man” is a snore fest.

Noble #15 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Kevin Grevioux takes over writing duties and gives us more on David and it reveals so much about why he chose his superhero name. But what is Astonisher doing at the end??

Sandman Universe: The Dreaming #6 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The conclusion of the first arc, and yet things are still as crazy and mixed up as they started. Dora’s journey has been the most interesting so far, but the ending indicates yet another new, unexpected change in the Dreaming.

Uncanny X-Men #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: The X-Men are “dead”, anti-mutant hatred is at an all time high, mutantkind is on the brink of extinction, and once again it’s up to Cyclops to make it right! It must be Tuesday!

Vindication #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Maybe I’m burnt out on $#**y cops and the $#**y justice system’s treatment of Black men stories because it hits too close to home. So I’ll just say this one wasn’t for me. Hopefully it’s out there for someone else though.

Young Justice #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: DC’s Wonder Comics is the new hotness and this trip to Gemworld is the story I didn’t know I wanted!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bendis’ take on these teenage characters is so far doing more for me than his Superman & Action runs. Wonder Girl’s interactions with her “grandpa” Zeus are great. My only minor quibble is the pacing and order of some of the dialogue & panels.
NickZ: Not as great as the first issue but still infinitely better than what Bendis is doing with Superman.

arnab@comicattack.net
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
martin@comicattack.net
nickz@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/17/18

Arnab

Arnab

Chirpin' Tuesday Reviews

Columns

DC Comics

IDW

Infinite Speech

Martin

Marvel

Nickz

Reviews

Top Cow

Vertigo

140 or less

banner

Chirpin Reviews

Chirps

Aquaman #41 (DC) NickZ: Mera does her best to balance her duties as queen of Atlantis and her commitment to the Justice League but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Either way Batman is pissed and KG Beast deserves what he gets!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. A difficult issue to rate. The artwork & action scenes are fantastic, as are the illustrations of the Fairy Tale by artist Mark Buckingham. But the idea that Batman would go through the effort to find KGBeast just to beat him up & not get info was stupid.
NickZ: You know you’ve really pissed Batman off when he makes a habit of bending his no killing rule to leave you for dead on more than one occasion.

Cover #2 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: David Mack and Brian Bendis are on fire with this one!

Darth Vader #22 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I haven’t been this excited about Vader since I was a kid!

Green Lanterns #57 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. This book looks great, but it’s an unfortunate send-off for the 2 characters for whom the book was created (Simon & Jessica). The Hal Jordan & Cyborg Superman story is fine – nothing special, but fine. But that’s not why I was reading this book.

Infinity Wars Weapon Hex #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: A pretty interesting twist on X-23 and the Scarlet Witches origin.

Justice League #10 (DC)
Infinite Speech: We meet more members of the League right before things go south in one of the best series from DC right now!
Martin: 4/5 stars. A prelude to the “Drowned” cross-over, with lots of crazy Snyder-style new characters and universe-spanning plots and twists. I liked the inclusion of Firestorm & Adam Strange in the League.
NickZ: Francis Manapul’s art and colors on this issue are incredible and I really like the dynamic Snyder has been setting up with Diana and Arthur.

Justice League Dark #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Stunning visuals and some really unexpected things happening. I particularly liked the arrival of Black Orchid, a former member of the New 52 JL Dark, being witch-marked by Hecate and trying to destroy The Green. It was a genuine surprise.
NickZ: The Witching Hour is crazy and fantastic! I really didn’t expect to like it THIS much!

Mr & Mrs X #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Rogue, Gambit, the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, and the Star Jammers! Yes, more of this, please!

Lucifer #1 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Great visuals and stunning coloring work help tell an intriguing three-part story featuring Lucifer as well as a new character, a human detective who is, for now, more interesting. Read my review here!

New Challengers #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. I really wanted to like this series, as I have a fondness for the old Challs. This new series just wasn’t given enough chance to breathe and become its own thing. This premature ending is confusing and feels extremely rushed.

Nightwing #51 (DC)
NickZ: Get out of here with this Ric Grayson business and who didn’t see that person taking up the mantel of Nightwing?

Old Man Logan #49 (Marvel)
NickZ: What do you do with two alternate, older version of heroes that have just recently been resurrected? Have them fight each other to the death of course, problem solved.

Pearl #3 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: Another Bendis title that you should be picking up but you’ll love that Gaydos artwork in every panel!

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #311 (Marvel)
NickZ: Morlun really kicks the s*** out of Peter for this entire issue! I glad that they haven’t backed away from the dynamic of Jameson helping Spider-Man.

Shuri #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I was unprepared for how great this book was going to be! The entire creative team was on fire and had me hooked with every page and now I want to know what Shuri’s answer is!

Teen Titans #23 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Not feeling this as much as I was before. Not sure if I’m sticking around much longer.
Martin: 2/5 stars. The nicest thing I can say is that I liked the art for this a lot. It’s too bad the plot and characterization are a complete mess. Djinn is probably the most interesting so far, so it helps that she’s the POV character of this issue.
NickZ: This iteration of the Teen Titans really sucks. They couldn’t stop one villain and then when they finally did catch up to her it was already too late.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #87 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: A great issue made even better when a friend of mine gets a cameo!

Thor #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: An OP Doom makes for one of the best villains ever! Now can next issue hurry up!

Venom Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: This almost had the feel of the “Almost Got ‘Im” episode of Batman the Animated Series, only with Venom instead of Batman.

X-Men Black Mystique #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Wasn’t really feeling the Mystique story but I’m fully on board for whatever is going on with Apocalypse!

arnab@comicattack.net
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
martin@comicattack.net
nickz@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 09/19/18

Arnab

Arnab

BOOM! Also, the variant cover was SICK! .

Aphrodite V #3 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Bryan Hill and Jeff Spokes are delivering the great storytelling that fans have been asking for in their comics in this series!

Avengers #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Black Panther is now the leader of the Avengers and Aaron, Marquez, & Ponsor leave us with a cliffhanger worth coming back for!

Batman #55 (DC)
Infinite Speech: What happened in this issue is wayyy more important than a look at the Bat-penis.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Some of the Nightwing dialogue was a little to “chummy” for me, but I guess that’s all part of the idea of this issue. I enjoyed the fights with, and mentions of, some of the goofy villains the Dynamic Duo have fought in the past. Ending was predictable.
NickZ: It’s all fun and games until someone shoots your Dick! Tom King loves to torment Batman with tragedy!

Batman Damned #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Pairing Constantine and Batman is always a good idea especially when you Lee Bermejo making is look spectacular!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bermejo’s art is gorgeous and worth, and alone worth it to pick up this book. The story has some very compelling ideas, and the match-up of Constantine, Deadman, and Batman is unique. It’s extremely dark, but not in a cheap way.
NickZ: People always say that Batman is cocky, now it’s just literal. All controversy aside, this is a really interesting story that’s being eclipsed by all the fanboys who suddenly feel inadequate.

Bonehead #4 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: An excellent series when you need a break from the capes and tights.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Reckoning #4 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: WOW, if this is how Buffy the Vampire Slayer finally ends then I’m actually fine with it. Every character didn’t get the ending that I wanted but everyone got some kind of happy ending and some things I wanted were eluded to.

Captain America Annual #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The creative team tells a wonderful flashback story from Cap and Bucky’s past.

Coda #5 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. The beginning of the second arc focuses mainly on X’s relationship with his wife, Serka, & adds some great depth to the characters & overall story. There’s also an almost Shakespearian quality to the conversation between Hum & his severed Ylf head.

Death or Glory #5 (Image)
NickZ: What a nonstop, action packed adventure that even manages to develop it’s characters and make everything they do understandable! This is a great series that shouldn’t be missed!

Doctor Strange #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Waid delivered another solid issue but it was the one panel Jesus Saiz showed the damage to Stephen’s hands that provided a great, quiet moment.
NickZ: Holy Hogwarts! I don’t think I’ve ever seen Doctor Strange be more badass than he is in this issue! Saiz’s art works so amazingly to showcase this new and improved Stephen Strange! (or whoever he is?)

Edge of Spider-Geddon #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Spider-Ben and Petey maybe my new favorite alternate versions of Spider-Man but man am I worried about what tragedy befalls them in Spider-Geddon!

Green Lanterns #55 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’ve be-moaned the lack of the Jessica-Simon focus of this book lately, but in this issue, Simon doesn’t even appear. The only thing I really got out of this issue is that Cyborg Superman is way more powerful than I thought.

Hit-Girl #8 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Where is this going? And I’m not referring to her trips around the globe just killing people.

Infinity Wars Soldier Supreme #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: I feel like these Infinity Warps are the closest we are ever going to get to revisiting the Amalgam Universe. In any event they are pretty cool, and I love Adam Kubert’s art in this!

Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Love these mash-ups but I’d like to see another MOTU series without all of the guest stars.

Justice League #8 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Guess I should have read all of Metal but this was still a solid Legion of Doom focused story from Tynion
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m still liking the more character-driven approach of this title. This particular issue continues the focus on the villains, primarily Lex Luthor, Cheetah, & Black Manta, but it’s good, intriguing story-telling.
NickZ: There is so much universe building going on in this series! If you want to understand anything going forward in the DCU you should be reading Justice League! But also read it because it is AMAZING!

Kick-Ass #7 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This is a great continuation of the series but when did they start calling Patience “Kick-Ass”?

Mister Miracle #11 (DC)
Martin: 5/5 stars. Seldom have I read a run in comics this long in which every issue is fantastic. So far, with 11 out of 12 issues complete, this is one of those comics. The publication delays are definitely worth the wait.
NickZ: Tom King takes you through every spectrum of emotion in this issue and leaves you with your mind as blown open as the Source Wall!

Mr. & Mrs. X #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: I’m just going to say it, this has the best Gambit and Deadpool fight sequence ever put to print! Kelly Thompson and Oscar Bazaldua are making comic book gold right here!

Multiple Man #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Time travel! Duplicates! Alternate realities! I have a headache now and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

New Challengers #5 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. The idea of this story is better than the execution, but I assume that is due to the change in making this only a 6-issue mini-series vs an on-going. The story is so confusing and the rushed nature makes it difficult to connect with the characters.

Pearl #2 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: Gaydos’ visual storytelling pulls you into the world of Pearl while Bendis makes sure the characters are worth sticking around for!

Return of Wolverine #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Did McNiven channel the skills of Barry Windsor Smith for this issue? It looked fantastic!
NickZ: Wolverine is back…I guess.

Seven To Eternity #11 (Image)
NickZ: Everything has gotten so mixed up, I’m not sure who side we are supposed to be on at this point.

Shadowman #7 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Andy Diggle’s walk through the Shadowman’s lineage has been one of the best arcs to come out of this series.

Summit #9 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Summit’s supporting cast is getting better and seeing what Min did to T.K. was icing on the cake in this issue!

Superb #13 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: I need the heroes to go ahead and rescue the kids so they can and put these evil $#@! down!

Teen Titans #22 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This issue was treading in “meh” territory until we get to see who Damian’s silent “partner” is.
Martin: 2/5 stars. That was officially my last issue of Teen Titans for the time-being. I kept wanting to give it a chance, but it’s been dismal. Robin and Emiko are not acting in character, Crush is so 1-dimensional that it’s almost comical, & Kid Flash sulks too much.
NickZ: Batman is going to be so pissed when he finds out who Damian is working with! Looks like another Robin will be getting his ass kicked by Bat-dad!

Thor #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Now if that wasn’t the most OP version of Doom I don’t know what is! HOLY $#!@

Venom #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Stegman is doing some very cool things visually to tell this story and by the end of it Cates had made me sad. Stop making me sad Cates!
NickZ: This Venom arc continues to be blazing hot! Cates and Stegman are making a masterpiece and Eddie and the Venom Symbiote have never been more heroic!

Venom First Host #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Between what is happening in this series and the main Venom book, I don’t see how they can have anyone else besides Eddie be the Venom host ever again!

West Coast Avengers #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This book is about fun superhero action and Kelly Thompson has made me laugh from start to finish!
NickZ: The feel of this book is a mash-up between the og West Coast Avengers and Young Avengers! Great end to this arc. While this arc was uneven, & I wasn’t thrilled with the villain, I liked everything else about it, particularly the interactions between Black Lighting, Batman, & the rest of the Bat Family. Looking forward to Outsiders!

Executive Assistant: Iris #4 (Aspen)
Infinite Speech: I’m here for Iris’ take no sh*t attitude and assassin skills! I’ll need more from Northcott!

Flash #53 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Some background on Commander Cold sheds some light on a character that I’m starting to like.
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’ve always liked Flash’s relationship with the Trickster, the youngest of the Rogues. Commander Cold gets some interesting background development; he makes a fun & different (and hopefully temporary) companion for the Flash.

Hit-Girl #7 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Hit-Girl needs a day off.

Incidentals #11 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: This is one dysfunctional team and I’m here for all of it!

Justice League: Dark #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Did not see that twist coming and I’m officially on board and liking Detective Chimp!
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. 2 issues in, and this is one crazy ride! Awesome, creepy, horror-inspired visuals, great characterization, the return of some classic characters, and very clever plot-twists. My comic of the week.

Shadowman #6 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: This fall through time has been some of the best storytelling of the Shadowman mythos but I can’t wait to see the end result!

Silencer #8 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Okay that was one hell of a cliffhanger!

Teen Titans #21 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I really want to like this series but I’m not sure if it knows what it wants to be yet. Kid Flash is now more annoying than Damian and that’s a feat unto itself!
Martin: 3/5 stars. There is actually potential for this title, but it hasn’t gelled yet. Part of that is the composition of the team. There are too many characters, many of them new, who haven’t been developed yet. Others act out-of-character (particularly Red Arrow).

Terrifics #7 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The best of the New Age of Heroes titles has had a slow, methodical build-up, and it’s getting closer to mixing the Terrifics with Tom Strong, hinted at all the way back in issue #1. The retro visuals of the Tom Strong scenes are great.

Venom #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Cates and Stegman have given Venom a story and power upgrade and you should be reading every single issue! I just need the symbiote to wipe the blood off Eddie’s face though.

West Coast Avengers #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I laughed and laughed some more and loved that an OG West Coast Avenger showed up to make things even crazier!

Wonder Woman #53 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. While I am enjoying this more than the previous arc, I found the story & pacing in this issue quite confusing. I also don’t read JLA or Red Hood, so have no connection to the two supporting characters, who are very underdeveloped in this.

arnab@comicattack.net
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
martin@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 07/18/18

Arnab

Arnab

Black Mask

BOOM! If you’re not already reading this then you’ll need to start!
Eric: This cyber modern noir take on Aphrodite is pretty cool visually. The big “wedding aftermath” issue shows an emotionally damaged Bruce Wayne trying to deal with his feelings. The plot device, that Bruce has been called to jury duty to evaluate a case involving Batman & Mr. Freeze is a bit contrived, but so far, it works.
NickZ: Whatever your current feelings are about Tom King and his Batman story, you gotta admit, the man knows how to subvert expectations and take you somewhere you didn’t expect to go.
Eric: King is treading new ground by forcing Bruce Wayne to reverse the mistakes of Batman. I’ve loved Sharp’s art on this series, and the story did get better for a while, but the conclusion is a jumble of motivations, characters, and action sequences that’s quite difficult to follow. Batman & Wonder Woman seem like afterthoughts.
NickZ: This mini-series wasn’t that great and the thought that it is to be continued is not appealing at all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Reckoning #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: How do you defeat an enemy who gains your memories as you make them?

Cable #159 (Marvel)
NickZ: Any time we revisit Cable’s time with Redd and Slym is a plus in my book.

East of West #38 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Dragotta’s fantastic art, especially his characters, continue to be a highlight of this series.
