I instantly snapped it up and didn’t even wait to get home before I started reading it. For those who have seen the animated short, the book begins with a near faithful retelling of the short itself with a few notable changes.

Ronin, as he’s presented to the reader, is the same sullen wanderer, accompanied only by his faithful droid, roaming the countryside of a Star Wars-esque representation of feudal Japan. While the short would have his wanderings seem aimless, the book however, has Ronin being driven by a voice that points him toward Sith in the hopes that one will eventually take his life. After defeating the Sith, the voice spurns him onward, and it is revealed that the power of the voice has resurrected the defeated Sith who follows behind on a quest for revenge. As the story progresses and Ronin’s journey draws him closer and closer to the source of the voice, he’ll join a diverse cast of accomplices as he battles his way across the galaxy toward a planet once destroyed by the power of the Sith.

Ronin suffers from some serious pacing issues and can be quite confusing for readers who can’t give it their full attention. After the initial clash, Ronin is forced onto a journey he doesn’t want to make. As he reluctantly retreads his footsteps toward a past he doesn’t want to confront, we the readers are likewise dragged through this alternate world. The fluctuations between battles and world building are jarring and I think the writer, in an attempt to inject a bit of intrigue, makes the characters and their motivations a bit too complex. Character motivations and actions are all over the place from chapter to chapter, with very few being able to maintain a solid “arc” throughout the story.

Where Ronin excels is in the environmental details. The author does an amazing job in describing the environments and the best bits of the storytelling lead to me being able to close my eyes and imagine the spaces the author described. To see in terms of what the environment looked like, the beauty of some and the devastation in others. But these deviations to describe the world tend to be the main reason why Ronin suffers these pacing issues. More often than it should, these descriptive moments cut into moments of character building and revelation like a bomb. At one point in the story, Ronin comes across a mcguffin and while the audience is getting the backstory of this thing that’s so integral to the story, the author drifts off on a page long description of what the environment he’s standing in looks like, sight and sound, completely breaking the moment.

I really wanted to like Ronin. As I mentioned, I was excited to see it was adapted into a novelization. It started strong as well, easily drawing me in with the initial conflict between Ronin and the Sith. However, as the story progressed, the excitement drained with the momentum. It was very interesting to imagine a manga inspired version of Star Wars, however for most I’d recommend just rewatching Visions.

-Eric Snell
esnell@comicattack.net

Marvel and Lucasfilm Debut New Star Wars Pride Variant Covers

Admin

News

Star Wars

Darth Vader

Doctor Aphra

Galactic Empire

Han Solo

Jedi

Jorge Jiminez

LGBTQ+

Lucasfilm

Pride Month

Yoda

Back in March, StarWars.com revealed four of this year’s stunning STAR WARS PRIDE VARIANT COVERS, and today, Marvel is proud to share all seven covers that will adorn some of your favorite Star Wars comic titles this June. My inner geek made it imperative that I buy the Star Wars Collection (complete with collectible box). For full disclosure, first off, I did not reach out to Dr. Squatch for anything, this was completely an impulsive purchase with my own money. Second, Dr. Squatch might not be the most expensive soap I’ve ever bought, but it sure as hell isn’t the cheapest. At $7.00 a bar, I think a lot of people would decide to go elsewhere for their personal hygiene products.

I honestly admit that I expected Dr. Squatch to be a gimmick and to have wasted my money on some perfume soap and a fancy box. However, after three months, I think I’m going to have to try more bars. I’m a washcloth user but I know there’s a good portion of the population that prefers to apply soap directly to the skin. While that information may be TMI, it’s important to mention for the life of the soap. By lathering with a washcloth and washing that way, the soap actually lasted two weeks longer than another member of my household who prefers to wash soap to skin (separate bar); I was actually surprised at the difference in longevity. That brings me to another point, I have a teenage son with a medical condition that causes him to abnormally perspire. For the weeks in which we tested the soaps, him using the Wisdom Wash and Ruthless Rinse while I used the Only Hope Soap and Dark Side Scrub, he smelled great! However, I did notice that the scent of the soap lingered on him longer than it did on me so that might be a downside to using a washcloth. Either way, and I’m no expert, anything that can get my kid to smell good during a heatwave is worth the money in my house. I’ve already reordered a set of soaps just for him.

As for me, besides smelling amazing, I really liked how well my skin was hydrated. As a Black man, lotion is a must after a shower if I don’t want my elbows and knees to turn white the minute I dry off. However, I found myself going days without needing it, which is a plus as the smell of the soap didn’t get overpowered by the lotion I tend to use. Also my wife liked my new scent so that’s another win. I will say that for moisturization the Only Hope Soap worked way better than the Dark Side Scrub.

The commercials are silly as hell, but so far the soaps have been legit. I’m more than happy that I gave it a chance and might try out some of their other products as well. The downside is that you can’t buy the Star Wars soaps individually, but you don’t have to be a geek like me to try any of the others. I’ve recently tried some of the other “flavors” of soap (Editor’s note: Comic Attack is not responsible for any complications caused by readers deciding to taste test Dr. Squatch soap) and the Cold Brew and Bay Rum, which aren’t part of the Star Wars Collection unfortunately, have worked well for me now as well. Summer is here and if these soaps continue to stand up to the sweatiest months of the year, Dr. Squatch will have a dedicated new customer. I confidently recommend them!

Eric Snell
esnell@comicattack.net

The Galaxy’s Most Dangerous Bounty Hunter Comes to Power in New ‘Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett’ Trailer

InfiniteSpeech

Disney

Infinite Speech

Movie Trailers

Star Wars

Boba Fett

Fennec Shand

Jabba the Hutt

Ming-Na Wen

Temuera Morrison

The Mandalorian

When we last saw Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) he had dispatched Bib Fortuna from the throne of his former boss, Jabba the Hutt. This resulted in us combining the animated films that were able to drop this year to help fill out the brackets. We also got a lot of positive feedback on combining the art teams so we kept that going for this year as well.

The rules are pretty simple. In the CA.net Fan Poll you’ll vote for your top 5 entries in each category. That’s five (5) votes per category you can cast from submissions sent in and some from our staff. You can do this daily and if you don’t see an entry you think deserves to be in a certain category then add them in!

Well, you can vote for those and others below in the first part of our Top 5 Fan Poll! So get your votes in now as the polls will close January 3rd at 11:59 PM EST!

<img And with the way things were left at the end of the first season fans can’t wait to get back to the action. Seeing Moff Gideon wielding the darksaber atop the smoldering TIE Fighter still gives us chills!

Now With all of the hype surrounding this season with appearances from Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett happening the trailer confirms that the Jedi will also play a role this time around. As Mando and The Child aka “Baby Yoda” continue to be the the most hunted duo in the galaxy at the moment. The trailer also hints that Baby Yoda’s race might be explored though if we are to take the words of The Armorer literally. Though she could also just be referring to the Jedi as well. Guess we’ll have to wait and see next month!

The Mandalorian season 2 begins streaming on Disney Plus October 30th and for a refresher on season 1 you can check out the ComicAttack Podcast episode here!

This is the way!

PR: EA’s ‘Star Wars: Squadrons’ Announced and New Trailer!

Admin

News

Star Wars

Video Games

Battle of Endor

cross-play

Playstation

Rebellion

Star Wars: Squadrons

Tie Fighter

Titan Squadron

Vanguard Squadron

X-Wing

Calling all pilots! Back when they were at their height and peacekeepers of the galaxy. Before the dark times…before the Empire. The story of the High Republic will be told through childrens books, comics, young adult and adult novels which means we’ll get to see this new era develop through the talents of many voices from the narratives to the artwork.

Star Wars: The High Republic Concept Art by Phil Noto

Now we get our first look at some of the Jedi who will be making up the world of Star Wars: The High Republic and a little insight as to who they are from Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain.

“Readers will see a very wide variety of Jedi in this era,” says Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi are good and noble, and we want to reflect that in their characters while still giving them enough depth and dimension so that their individual personalities and idiosyncrasies shine through. The Jedi Knights of the High Republic are both aspirational and inspirational. In short, they’re the good guys.”

While the Jedi are undoubtedly heroes in The High Republic, they promise to be varied, unique, and very “human” — no matter their species. “We’ve put a lot of time and effort into making our Jedi feel like real, rounded individuals,” writer Cavan Scott, one of the architects of The High Republic, tells StarWars.com. “They are all different, approaching the Force in individual and unique ways and yet are united with a common goal. They serve not out of unwavering dogma, but a deep passion to protect light and life. And they’re all at different stages in their individual journeys. Some have experience on their side, some have the exuberance of youth. Some are still finding their place in the Order while others step naturally into leadership roles. Some may not have chosen to work with the Jedi they’ve been posted alongside, but all are dedicated to be a guiding light for the galaxy. Individually they are strong, together they are invincible, but like the best heroes they each have lessons to learn and challenges to overcome. She is determined to prove herself to Avar and the other legendary Jedi stationed on Starlight Beacon, but first she must learn to trust in herself as much as she trusts the Force.

Loden Greatstorm

Loden is a Twi’lek Jedi Master, and is considered to be one of the best teachers in the Jedi Order. To her, the true worth of the galactic relics she discovers isn’t found in a museum, but in an arsenal. This viewpoint has led to a lot of misunderstandings. After her latest plan goes horribly wrong, her roguish ways are on the verge of catching up to her, when suddenly Darth Vader, terror of the galaxy, swoops in with his lightsaber ignited, and…saves her life?

Don’t get her wrong—it’s not like she’s ungrateful. Sure, her new boss is a lord of the Sith. And OK, she may have just become a pawn in a deadly game being played by him and HIS boss, who happens to be the Galactic Emperor. And yes, the life expectancy of anyone who disappoints Vader can be measured in seconds.

But she’s back doing what she does best. She’s got a ship to fly, a heist to pull, and two unorthodox but effective metal buddies: Triple-Zero, a protocol droid specializing in etiquette, customs, translation, and torture; and BT-1, an astromech loaded with enough firepower to take down a battlecruiser. Together, they might just find a way to get the job done and avoid the deadly performance review that waits at its conclusion.

Just kidding. She’s doomed.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
