Not one ounce of momentum has been lost in the passage of time since we last saw Virgil. He’s looking out for the people in his community, hanging with his friends, and when it hits the fan he’s stepping up and doing what heroes do. All while still finding time to be a mentor to a young, burgeoning, scientist.

Now for those that might have missed out on Season One of Static, there’s a great synopsis that eases you right into this issue. Recaps like this are crucial to making the book highly accessible to new readers and I’m glad this was added. From here we get get a sense of who Static truly is, in and out of the costume. From the heartfelt moments to the high energy action sequences everything just flows perfectly. The dialogue is still some of my favorite and feels organic and true. As good as it was to see Static in action, the appearance of a new villain is what really moves things along. It’s been known that Ebon was going to appear but we absolutely were not ready for this here! It’s tense and sends chills down your spine. Which is fitting for a guy who moves through the darkness and plays no games.

The art just keeps getting better with each issue as Nikolas Draper-Ivey seems to keep pushing his skills to new places. He’s giving you the emotional impact needed to drive the narrative when Static saves a little girl. Or when she’s terrified and begging for her brother to be saved. Sequences with Ebon are shrouded mostly in darkness and give the book an entirely different feel. It’s that atmosphere that hints at the danger he presents and will have you coming back for more next issue.

This is exactly the type of comic you want to read if you’re looking for great art and storytelling is worth every cent! You’ll want to see where this creative team is taking Static and his friends as well as his enemies so make sure to get you a copy!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Crisis of Infinite Reviews: 4/13/22

InfiniteSpeech

Crisis of Infinite Reviews

DC Comics

Infinite Speech

Milestone Media

Reviews

Batman

Black Adam

Damian Wayne

Deathstroke

League of Assassins

Milestone Comics

Naomi

Ra's Al Ghul

Robin

Shadow War

Static

Virgil Hawkins

Static: Season One #6Publisher: DC ComicsWriter: Vita AyalaArt: Kikolas Draper-IveyLetters: Andworld DesignCover: Khary Randolph & Emilio Lopez Everything about Static‘s first season has been some of THE most on point storytelling and character building to hit comics. Showing off a hero’s journey that has been nothing short of superhero perfection as it all comes together here in his attempt to save the Bang Babies and shift the narrative of how these newly superpowered teenagers are seen by the public. It’s an insanely fast paced issue as the battle rages on that’s kept entertaining by some great dialogue whether between the characters or Virgil’s own inner thoughts and intense action sequences courtesy of Draper-Ivey. He just can’t miss as he continues to visually make each issue better than the last. However, it’s a decision that she’s forced to back but it all takes a turn when a bullet passes through her father’s head. The primary suspect is Deathstroke however, someone better tell him that.

The creative team nails what’s necessary to grab your attention for the beginning of this event. Williamson sets a great pace and delivers a balance of heartfelt moments between Batman and his son and the over-the-top action that is made even better with Bogdonavic, Henriques, and Spicer’s artwork! The big moments pop with intensity and the quieter sequences work even better in-between them.

There’s a few twists here and there and when dealing with an Al Ghul you really don’t know who to trust nor whose motives are actually true. My only gripe is the name of Deathstroke’s kid and every time I hear it it invokes an eyeroll. Other than that this is just a ridiculously fun issue. 3.5/5

Naomi: Season Two #1
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis & David F. It’s during the session where we find out that not all is well and her parents might be hiding more from Naomi. The build up is tense and this character driven issue highlights what both of these writers do so well. Jamal Campbell’s art is by far some of THE best in comics RIGHT NOW! Every panel on every page is just eye candy that we probably don’t deserve. The attention to detail is welcoming especially when it comes to Naomi’s hair. This might not seem too important for some but for Black comic readers who have had to suffer with sub par depictions of our hair this is just beautiful. The rumored fight between Black Adam and Naomi is a jaw dropping double splash page that is made even better by the colors and the energy depictions.
An overall great way to start the series especially when the character development and art are so in synch like this! 4.5/5

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

New ‘Static’ Film, the Return of Blood Syndicate, and More Announced at DC FanDome!

InfiniteSpeech

DC Comics

Milestone Media

DC FanDome

Denys Cowan

Hardware

Icon & Rocket

Michael B. Ever since the Season One line of books made their debut many longtime fans have been asking for one more title to join the list. Now it looks as if our wait is over and Blood Syndicate will finally be rejoining the Milestone Comics line up! No creative team was announced yet but it looks like we’ll be seeing the book sometime in 2022.

Now for you old school Milestone fans and newer readers who just want to see where things began, DC will be releasing Milestone Compendium One in February 1, 2022. The book is going to be massive a 1,300 pages with classic stories from Dwayne McDuffie, John Rozum, Frazer Irving, and more. This book will collect Hardware #1-12, Icon #1-10, Blood Syndicate #1-12, Static #1-8, Shadow Cabinet #0, and Xombi #1-8.

It’s was also mentioned that in the current line of Static, Icon & Rocket, and Hardware there will be more interactions connecting the Dakotaverse heroes during Season Two. Something that we’ve seen hints of now but will certainly excite many fans.

Fans of Static also received some great news when it was confirmed by Reggie Hudlin and Denys Cowan that the live action film is on it’s way! The news was sparse but we do know that Randy McKinnon is writing the script and it will be produced jointly with Warner Bros. and Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society.

Ever since Static, Hardware, Icon, and Rocket appeared in Young Justice the fans have been wanting to see more of the Dakotaverse heroes in something of their own. Well look no further because an animated film has also been announced. The film will be written by Brandon Thomas and will feature Milestone favorites. No release date yet but we’ll be keep you posted as things develop.

You would think that with new comics, a live action movie, and an animated feature film on the way that that would be enough but Milestone isn’t finished yet as they have also announced the Milestone Initiative Development Program! In collaboration with Ally the program will serve “Black and underrepresented” comic creators. If that’s you and you have a story to tell then we highly suggest you click the link for more details and begin the submission process as the last day to submit is November 15, 2021.

Milestone looks to be giving the fans what they want and is set to have a huge couple of years! It’s obvious some of the residents know who they are but it’s great to see them pretending to not know a thing when confronted by the cops and reporters. This series of exchanges and the human element definitely raise the bar here. Hudlin is also establishing a solid group of secondary characters who help flesh out this issue and add some more depth to our heroes here. For example, we have the appearance of the mysterious Benedict Lord, a character with presence and all the trappings of a potentially great villain. His introduction reveals a feud with Augustus that began back in the 1800s after a particular revolution in history. My only gripe with the story is Raquel destroying that woman’s apartment in the attempt to save her. You might want to chalk it up to her being young and impulsive but c’mon! The action could have been dialed up without things going down the way they did.

When it comes to the visuals, Braithwaite delivers quality line work while Curie and Anderson punch it up to give us panel after panel of great storytelling. The action sequences steal the show every time here and it was nice to see that Icon’s original color palette is being used for his costume instead of what we saw in the promo shots. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right? Now as good as the art is, one particular page stood out from the rest. Augustus’ triumph during the flashback is such an impactful full page scene because I can’t remember us ever seeing him in that state. It’s brutality with a message and within the context of the narrative, its meaning is that much more powerful.

The nostalgia of Icon & Rocket is what got me to pick up this relaunch but I wanted to make sure it’s not what kept me here. However, it’s issues like this where the creative team is delivering fresh, new stories that will cement Icon & Rocket a place in my read pile!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

DC Reviews: Static: Season One #2

InfiniteSpeech

DC Comics

Milestone Media

Reviews

Dakota

Milestone Comics

Nikolas Draper-Ivey

Static

Virgil Hawkins

Vita Ayala

Static: Season One #2Publisher: DCWriter: Vita AyalaArtist: ChrisCross & Nikolas Draper-IveyLetters: Andworld DesignCover: Khary Randolph & Emilio Lopez I was not expecting the second issue of Static to hit as hard as it did but that’s what I get for underestimating this creative team. Vita Ayala raises the bar with a narrative that takes you on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. They give us a glimpse of another Bang Baby before we get to the stand off between Static and Hotstreak. Vita makes their rivalry so personal and bitter here as Hotstreak gives not one solitary $#@! as he wraps the Hawkins’ home in flames and tries to destroy their lives. It’s not only the superhero action where Vita excels, but the human element as well. When they slow things down there’s still a nice dramatic build as Virgil’s parents have one of the most honest and Black discussions regarding experimentation and the possibility of more people poking around their son due to his abilities. Jean’s viewpoint on being a Black woman and the dangers they face in the medical field was such a moving conversation and I’m so glad Vita had her deliver so much truth to her husband. We also get to see what Holocaust has been up to as Virgil reaches out to Curtis Metcalf, aka Hardware, for some help.

The visuals from Nikolas Draper-Ivey and Chriscross are once again some of the best to hit the shelves this week in comics. They bring high-energy to a fight that was supposed to be winding down and in it’s final moments, it’s one of the best action sequences and emotional gut punches all in one. The rest of the issue continues to be just as eye catching from dynamic panel layouts to strong emotional moments doing what it takes to reinforce the great narrative of the story. It might not be much to some, but showcasing that Virgil is a skater was a nice touch.

A comic as good as Static: Season One is what you get when you trust talented, fresh, new voices to tell the stories of these classic characters. If you had any doubts going into the relaunch of this series, just know that this one here should wipe all of those away as you prepare to settle in for the rest of Season One!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

DC Reviews: Static: Season One #1

InfiniteSpeech

DC Comics

Milestone Media

Reviews

Dwayne McDuffie

Milestone Comics

Nikolas Draper-Ivey

Static

Virgil Hawkins

Vita Ayala

Static: Season One #1Publisher: DCWriter: Vita AyalaArtist: ChrisCross & Nikolas Draper-IveyLetters: Andworld DesignCover: Khary Randolph & Emilio Lopez It’s been a long and frustrating wait but Milestone is back and that means the return of one of the greatest young heroes to ever grace comic pages, Virgil Hawkins aka Static! A huge thanks to Vita Ayala whose dialogue naturally conveys Virgil’s struggle with his new powers and dealing with the trauma of how they came about. At no point does any of it feel forced or cringe like many comics where the cast is young and the writer sounds like he watched an after school special and his slang is 10 years past it’s expiration date. Ayala is the fresh voice we needed and as someone who works with teenagers they nailed it as I could hear some of my own students in these pages. Ayala also delivers heartfelt, quality moments with Virgil and his family and keeps the secondary characters just as rich and engaging when we see them. It’s this great pacing that also enhances the rivalry between Hotstreak and Static as the tension slowly builds until that hard hitting cliffhanger.

As far as the art is concerned, ChrisCross and Nikolas Draper-Ivey killed it in every single panel. When you have an artist that not only understands our fashion but the attention to detail and intricacies of our hair; there’s an authenticity in the art that just can’t be duplicated. Can’t tell you how many comics there are where Black male characters have some of the THE most messed up hairstyles because artists just don’t get it. The panel layouts for those two dinner scenes are sequential excellence. The tonal changes due to the color pallet shifts during those scenes are profound and enhances this level of storytelling. That cliffhanger I mentioned earlier also comes off even more sinister and heartbreaking because of the visuals.

When Milestone gave comic fans Static back in 1993 they were so ahead of the times in terms of representation and telling the superhero stories of those who rarely saw themselves in these books. After they were gone, that void was felt by many of us but Milestone’s legacy and influences lived on and now we get the results of that here. A creative team that has taken the baton and ran full speed to the finish line. Giving us a great entry point for new readers and something just as good for those of us who were there at the beginning. Static: Season One is a must have comic for your read pile!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

New Milestone Comics and Creative Teams Announced!

InfiniteSpeech

Milestone Media

News

Denys Cowan

Dwayne McDuffie

Hardware

Icon and Rocket

Khary Randolph

Nikolas A. Reginald “Reggie” Hudlin is a partner in Milestone Media, as well as an Oscar- and Emmy-nominated film and television producer and director. His comic book credits include award-winning runs on Black Panther and Spider-Man for Marvel.

Milestone Returns: Infinite Edition #0

The excitement kicks off February 26 with a digital-first “extended cut” of the Milestone Returns #0 one-shot. Originally available only during 2020’s DC FanDome Hall of Heroes and Explore the Multiverse, this updated edition also arrives in comic book stores on May 25. Milestone Returns: Infinite Edition #0 combines the original 17-page comic with an additional 24 pages of completely new material written by Reginald Hudlin and drawn by artists Denys Cowan, Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Bill Sienkiewicz, and more.

This added content includes a retelling of the events of the Big Bang, the police-brutality protest that unleashed a sudden wave of superpowers in the city of Dakota. This $4.99 “director’s cut” also features content introducing the full new creative teams behind Static, Icon & Rocket, and Hardware, the digital-first series spawned by this new Big Bang, along with a reveal of their issue #1 covers.

“The response from fans after the DC FanDome panel was overwhelming, and that makes this news even more exciting for Denys and me,” said Hudlin. “Introducing these ‘seasons’ of Static, Icon, Rocket, and Hardware is just the beginning. There will be more stories with these favorite characters to come, and fans will see appearances from the legendary Blood Syndicate, setting the stage for an explosive Milestone event later in the year.”

In addition, DC’s future plans include the long-awaited launch of Earth M, a new line of comics conceived by Cowan and Hudlin, which will include the return of Duo, introduced to readers in Milestone Returns “#0, and other characters who will also appear in Milestone comics.

Static Digital-First Miniseries

Following in April, fans can expect new adventures of Dakota teenager Virgil Hawkins in a six-issue Static digital-first series.

In this monthly miniseries (20 pages per issue), bullied nerd Virgil is gifted with incredible electromagnetic powers in the wake of the Big Bang. Now he finds himself caught between an over-militarized police response to Black kids getting special abilities and some of those kids who are using those powers in dangerous and destructive ways. But when the bullies who terrorized him before the Big Bang show up with powers of their own, can Static be the hero that Dakota needs?

Static launches Monday, April 12. Each 20-page issue will be available on participating digital platforms for $3.99.

Icon & Rocket Digital-First Miniseries

The return of Augustus Freeman and Raquel Ervin is also in the works, with a new series featuring Icon and Rocket.

What happens when superheroes actually make a difference? When Raquel Ervin broke into the home of a wealthy Black lawyer, she didn’t expect to learn that he was a nearly omnipotent alien, lost in despair of ever returning home—and he didn’t expect that she would inspire him to emerge from the shadows and become a force for change on the planet he’s trapped on. What starts out as a simple request to stop the drug trafficking in her neighborhood turns into a mission to eliminate the drug trade worldwide. However, this act of heroism has unexpected consequences, making the pair the two most wanted criminals in the world when actually stopping crime leads to the collapse of the global economy!

The debut issue of this six-issue monthly series (20 pages each) arrives June 21 for $3.99 per issue.

Hardware Digital-First Miniseries

The relaunch of Milestone would not be complete without some mention of Curtis Metcalf, and beginning August 23, the first wave of new Milestone stories climaxes with the return of Hardware in a new digital-first series. This six-issue monthly series features the return of legendary artist and Milestone cofounder Denys Cowan with Bill Sienkiewicz on the character that completes the foundation of Milestone and the Dakota universe, both past and present.

All his life, young prodigy Curtis Metcalf was told he was special, and that he would save the world. But it turns out that Alva Industries wanted his beautiful mind for something a lot less noble than that—and his technology has made him the fall guy for the tragedy of the Big Bang. But Curtis is smart enough to not go out like that—and smart enough to steal his inventions back from Alva and start the process of remaking the world his way.

“Bringing back Milestone and the Dakota universe with DC has been an amazing journey,” said Cowan. “Getting the chance to do Hardware again with Bill Sienkiewicz is a dream come true. It’s the book that Dwayne McDuffie and I did together at Milestone originally, and I’ve always felt a strong connection to Curtis Metcalf. We can’t wait to bring fans the new adventures of Hardware!”

New issues of this series will be available each month for $3.99.

Complete Issues of Static #1, Icon #1 and Hardware #1 from Milestone’s 1993 debut are available to read for free with registration on the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE digital service. There is a comic book festival in Harlem. I can understand if you’re not as excited as I am, but in all fairness, the very idea of a comics festival in Harlem is super exciting to me, yet I get your potential indifference. For me it’skinda like being in a conversation and floating out a great line from an amazing movie that none of your friends have seen, some beautifully insider knowledge that turns something boilerplate into anything but. There is a bit of back knowledge and some cultural experiences that you might need to be aware of in order for a comic book convention at the Schomburg to be considered mind blowing but if we’re ever going to get you as excited for the black Comic Book Festival as you should be, then you have to be filled in on the backstory and for that we’re gonna have to start somewhat at the top.

We know now that Harlem was borrowed. Her streets and the stories told about them were to be leased out, held in wait, figuratively buried in the dark like black truffles, until gentrification made Harlem valuable enough to reclaim and the presence of palatable culture made her safe enough to consume. The stories lived by mothers guarding children from ironwood police batons and the stories of children born, flesh turned over time into bitter fruit with wax canvas skin, burdened with the false necessity of being something more special than themselves, were harvested and milled, processed and bleached and woven into stories of othering thrills and schadenfreude for white families to edify somewhere far away from Harlem streets.

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg

Yet either through foresight, fortune, or human nature, it occurred to someone: if you can’t own the ground beneath your feet, you should try to keep the memories you make there. And so there were collectors of the experiences of people of color — people from the community who gathered, catalogued, and maintained the experiences of the people of the neighborhood and of the African diaspora as a whole. One of these people was a historian from Puerto Rico of African and German descent named Arturo Schomburg and his collection came to be housed in a museum/research library on the corner of 135th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard and was named the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

As a part of the New York Public Library system, the Schomburg has been a home for the experiences of people of color since it opened its doors in 1925 and the experiences of people of color are broader now than ever before…except that isn’t entirely true. The black experience has always been staggeringly diverse, more diverse in many cases than many communities of color have been traditionally willing to accept. Kids of color who grew up enjoying genre fare such as D&D, Sci-Fi, and comic books know this first hand: puzzled stares and frayed patience of family and friends as you try to explain why you love what you love; the knee jerk sorting of anything not explicitly “hood” into the catch-all classification of “white people shit” making all identifiers of you to a group ill-fitting; the special kind of suck to be in a marginalized sub-group within an already marginalized group. As such, and for the longest time, POC and nerd culture had the hardest time syncing up. So imagine my surprise when I found out that there was a comic book festival in the heart of Harlem and at the Schomburg no less.

The 6th Annual Black Comic Book Festival which took place over two days (January 12 and the 13th) was billed as “celebrat[ing] the rich tradition of Black comix” and it did just that and so much more. There were panel discussions led by members of the POC comic community that shared stories about their success and struggles. There were film screenings and special appearances from stars of the upcoming Marvel film Black Panther. There was even a cosplay show and competition with cosplayers bringing the kind of quality costumes you just don’t see that far uptown outside of Halloween. Black comic creators from across the country made the trek to NYC and set up shop in the Schomburg’s halls, and filled them with the kinds of catching up and networking that have all but gone extinct at bigger cons. The other significant difference from other conventions is that unlike a San Diego or New York Comic convention, creator-owned independent titles ruled the day, which meant the show floor had new and raw talent as well as cult favorites and indie vets.

All and all it was a hell of a thing to behold.

There were teachers in attendance with their classes in tow, showing the children the painstakingly produced art that lavished every table and reminding them that creating beauty was something that everyone was capable of if they only tried. The creators talked to the kids about their love of anime and manga and old school Saturday morning cartoons and the kids smilled and gushed back about all the things they love on YouTube and in the movies. The children posed with the cosplayers dressed in painted foam and hard plastic armor and asked to hold their props, so they could feel like superheroes too. By the end of the day, everyone there felt a little more connected, both to a community of people who share a love affair with comics and sci-fi, and to the history and the horror and the triumph and the struggle of the black experience as told through the written word brought to life with digital ink and pixel pens, stories previously hidden in the streets of Harlem.

[signoff]

Phil LaMarr Gets Fans Ready For ‘Static Shock’ Season 3!

InfiniteSpeech

Infinite Speech

Milestone Media

News

banner

Dakota

Dwayne McDuffie

Gear

Jason Marsden

Milestone Comics

Phil LaMarr

Static Shock

Superman

Tim Daly

Toys in the Hood

Virgil Hawkins

STATIC SHOCK: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON COMING JANUARY 30, 2018 TO DVD Warner Archive Collection (WAC), a champion of classic super hero animation, next brings Static Shock: The Complete Third Season to DVD with a special two-disc package that will be available starting January 30, 2018 through wb.com/warnerarchive and your favorite online retailer. Plus getting to act again alongside my Justice League acting pals – Maria Canals Barrera, Susan Eisenberg, Carl Lumbly, Michael Rosenbaum, George Newbern, Kevin Conroy – was a blast, especially because now they were coming to MY house. Carl and Roscoe are guys whose work I’d seen growing up, and to share a studio with them was fantastic.

“Moreover, it was really cool to be able to explore our roots in a Saturday morning cartoon. I had never seen contemporary Africa on Saturday morning – an Africa that was not unlike our own world. We have super heroes, they have super heroes. Africa wasn’t showed as exotica – it was a world where people like us live. And to me, that was a great part of Static Shock. It wasn’t about that Static was black; but he was black. His life, his world – those were real. And that kind of normalization is what’s key to true diversity.”

The Static Shock: The Complete Third Season two-disc set includes the following animated episodes:

Disc One

Hard As Nails

Gear

Static in Africa

Shebang

The Usual Suspect

A League Of Their Own, Part 1

A League Of Their Own, Part 2

Showtime

Romeo in the Mix

Disc Two

Toys In The Hood

The Parent Trap

Flashback

Blast From The Past

Disc Two also includes the Superman: The Animated Series episode entitled “Obsession” (Season 3, Episode 4), which ultimately served as a prequel to the Static Shock episode, “Toys in the Hood” and spotlighted the first meeting of Superman and Static, featuring the voices of Tim Daly (Superman), Nancy Travis (Darci Mason), Bud Cort (The Toyman) and Joely Fisher (Lana Lang).

[divider]

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
