This issue lets us know what we already knew about Vulture and it’s very skippable.

Batman #70 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A proactive Batman that talks $#@! is one of my favorite kinds! Definitely a 4 out of 5 right here!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Great art by both Fornes and Janin, but this issue is mostly Batman just punching his way through Arkham, claiming that he’s “okay.” Bane’s big scheme has yet to be revealed, and it’s getting a little tiresome. Time to move the plot forward.

Batman/TMNT III #1 (DC/IDW)
Infinite Speech: HOLY $#@! this merging of the two universes is hitting hard right out of the gate and the surprise from Kevin Eastman was the cherry on top! Five out of five shells for this one!

Black AF: Devil’s Due #3 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: Vita Ayala is the storyteller to look out for no matter what they’re writing!

DCeased #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A twist on the zombie apocalypse genre that even catches Batman by surprise! Glad I gave this one a look so hopefully the next 5 issues keep it up.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Welcome to The Walking Superhero Dead. Or “DC’S Zombies,” which Marvel already did. I don’t blame DC for trying to cash in on zombies, but it seems years too late. I also wish they’d something new to add. I’ll give it another issue to see where it goes.

DC Year of the Villain #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Crazy, fun, and unpredictable. There’s a ton going on here, and the stories don’t always mesh they way that perhaps they were intended. But, Luthor once again raises the stakes to an unforeseen level.

Deathstroke #43 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Christopher Priest is writing Deathstroke perfection here that every fan should be reading!

Domino: Hotshots #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I need this team to stay together when this mini is all over because Gail Simone has put something really cool together right now.

Green Lantern #7 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. So glad I got the variant cover of this issue so the surprise wasn’t spoiled for me (it’s spelled out right on the regular cover). This is Morrison at his most weird and creative. The prose part put me off at first, but by the end I loved it.

Incidentals #17 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: This is coming together and feeling more like the team book it should be and it’s worth sticking around for.

Justice League #23 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Superman’s cheesy phrase never sounded so great and seeing Flash ask the team to wait up was hilarious. I haven’t enjoyed the Justice League this much since McDuffie was writing it.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Snyder’s been taking readers on quite a ride so far. This issue slows things down slightly to help provide context for what’s happening and even provide some thoughtful character moments, including an interesting proposal for Batman.

Sandman Universe: The Dreaming #9 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. One of the best issues of the series so far, with detailed, rich art by Evely. Daniel appears quite a bit, if only in flashback in the realm of Faery. The Faery Queen is also a very interesting character, & it’s nice to see Nuala.

Savage Avengers #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I was skeptical at first but this issue was like the good parts of the 90s mixed with Conan and then we get Deodato’s great artwork!

Transformers #4 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: So Ironhide is a habitual line stepper who’s been aggravating Megatron for millions of years. Normally I don’t get too caught up with continuity discrepancies, but I can’t tell if this title is supposed to be a different multiverse, whether Bendis can’t remember, or whether continuity’s irrelevant to this title. I love the relationship between him and Jon and hopefully DC doesn’t screw it up anytime soon!
Martin: 2/5 stars. Sadly, this 12-issue series has lost me after this issue. I thoroughly enjoyed the predecessor title but this doesn’t capture any of the fun or the relationship between Damian & Jon. Rex Luthor is a 1-dimensional villain I don’t care about

Age of X-Man: Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: If it looks too good to be true it probably is and it looks like X-23 might be on the verge of finding out what’s wrong with this world.

Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The Avengers meet the new vampire leader and this is turning out to be one great arc from Aaron, Marquez, and Ponsor!

Batman #64 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is the type of crossover that we deserve as Batman and Flash have a mystery to uncover!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Start of a 4-issue Batman/Flash cross-over tied into Heroes in Crisis. Oddly, it’s only tangentially related to HiC. The focus is on a character missing from Rebirth Batman for nearly 2 years: Gotham Girl. I’m cautiously intrigued about where this is going.

Black [AF]: Devil’s Dye #2 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: Vita Ayala wrote some of the best dialogue I’ve seen in comics this week and I’m seeing this one till the end!

Daredevil #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I argued with myself on whether to pick up yet ANOTHER DD number 1. Well this was worth it because Zdarsky writes a great intro to DD’s foray back into Hell’s Kitchen. The back-up story was told in a unique way as well.
NickZ: It took a kick ass Netflix series & my love of Chip Zdarsky to get me to pick up my first ever Daredevil book and boy did it deliver! I am already in love with this take on the character and Checchetto’s art is perfect! Can’t wait to dive in deeper to Matt Murdock’s psyche!

Deathstroke #40 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Priest is giving us one top tier series in Deathstroke and you should have it in your read pile!

Die #3 (Image)
NickZ: If Gillen can give me feels like this over “throw-away” characters we just met, then we are really in for a treat as this series develops.

Female Furies #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Female Furies has a point to make and it’s done well with both story and art! Also, get you a friend that will help you bury the body.
Martin: 3/5 stars. The idea of a book focusing on the Furies of Apokalips is intriguing, but the execution in this 1st issue doesn’t quite hit the mark. Getting more background on Granny Goodness is fine, but making her a sympathetic character isn’t the way to do it.
NickZ: Granny and the Furies are fighting sexism on Apokolips? I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book, but this isn’t it. It’s even more awkward that it sounds.

Green Arrow #49 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A really different look at a superhero vs supervillain fight. Count Vertigo has a beef with Roy Harper, NOT Arsenal (or Speedy or Red Arrow or whatever he’s calling himself). His reaction when he learns he can’t exact revenge on Roy was unexpected.

Green Lantern #4 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Grant Morrison’s & Liam Sharp’s run so far has been pure science-fiction goodness, reminiscent of older Silver Age stories but with modern sensibilities. Sharp’s alien designs alone are worth the cover price. Tons of fun!

Justice League #17 (DC)
Infinite Speech: WHOA!! Snyder just dropped a huge bomb on us with a connection between Luthor and Martian Manhunter and it was perfect!
Martin: 4/5 stars. After so many big, epic-scale issues, things slow down to focus on an intimate character study of 2 characters who seldom interact together: J’onn J’onnz & Lex Luthor. The implications of their meeting have more impact than dozens of explosions.

Killmonger #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hill and Ferreyra are telling a story you want that has everything you’ve been asking for in a great comic!

Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Compared to Uncanny, the “Age of X-Man” is a snore fest.

Noble #15 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Kevin Grevioux takes over writing duties and gives us more on David and it reveals so much about why he chose his superhero name. But what is Astonisher doing at the end??

Sandman Universe: The Dreaming #6 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The conclusion of the first arc, and yet things are still as crazy and mixed up as they started. Dora’s journey has been the most interesting so far, but the ending indicates yet another new, unexpected change in the Dreaming.

Uncanny X-Men #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: The X-Men are “dead”, anti-mutant hatred is at an all time high, mutantkind is on the brink of extinction, and once again it’s up to Cyclops to make it right! It must be Tuesday!

Vindication #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Maybe I’m burnt out on $#**y cops and the $#**y justice system’s treatment of Black men stories because it hits too close to home. So I’ll just say this one wasn’t for me. Hopefully it’s out there for someone else though.

Young Justice #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: DC’s Wonder Comics is the new hotness and this trip to Gemworld is the story I didn’t know I wanted!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bendis’ take on these teenage characters is so far doing more for me than his Superman & Action runs. Wonder Girl’s interactions with her “grandpa” Zeus are great. My only minor quibble is the pacing and order of some of the dialogue & panels.
NickZ: Not as great as the first issue but still infinitely better than what Bendis is doing with Superman.

arnab@comicattack.net
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
martin@comicattack.net
nickz@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 12/05/18

Arnab

Arnab

Black Mask

Chirpin' Tuesday Reviews

Columns

Dark Horse

DC Comics

IDW

Image

Infinite Speech

Lion Forge

Marvel

Nickz

Reviews

Valiant

140 or less

banner

Chirpin Reviews

Chirps

Adventures of the Super Sons #5 (DC) Infinite Speech: “They inspired themselves.” is the best line in this issue and wraps up a great arc as Damian and Jon are much better friends than their parents. If you’re not already reading this then you’ll need to start!
Eric: This cyber modern noir take on Aphrodite is pretty cool visually. But there isn’t much character development in issue 1.

Black [AF]: Widows and Orphans #2 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: That was a long wait between issues but it was worth it!

Batman #51 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The big “wedding aftermath” issue shows an emotionally damaged Bruce Wayne trying to deal with his feelings. The plot device, that Bruce has been called to jury duty to evaluate a case involving Batman & Mr. Freeze is a bit contrived, but so far, it works.
NickZ: Whatever your current feelings are about Tom King and his Batman story, you gotta admit, the man knows how to subvert expectations and take you somewhere you didn’t expect to go.
Eric: King is treading new ground by forcing Bruce Wayne to reverse the mistakes of Batman. This could be interesting…

Batwoman #17 (DC)
NickZ: Kate is trying to adjust to recent life changing events from this comic, Detective Comics, and Batman, so who better to do it with than an old flame?

The Brave and the Bold #6 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’ve loved Sharp’s art on this series, and the story did get better for a while, but the conclusion is a jumble of motivations, characters, and action sequences that’s quite difficult to follow. Batman & Wonder Woman seem like afterthoughts.
NickZ: This mini-series wasn’t that great and the thought that it is to be continued is not appealing at all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Reckoning #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: How do you defeat an enemy who gains your memories as you make them?

Cable #159 (Marvel)
NickZ: Any time we revisit Cable’s time with Redd and Slym is a plus in my book.

East of West #38 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Dragotta’s fantastic art, especially his characters, continue to be a highlight of this series. The Apocalypse is looming, and the death of a major character (and how the character was set up) make this series feel like every issue is important.

Green Lanterns #51 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I am really bummed that this series seems to be turning into a standard GL Corps book instead of a book focusing on Simon & Jessica, but that said, I am intrigued by the mystery being set up, & how Jess’ ring is warning her not to trust anybody.

Hunt For Wolverine The Claws of a Killer #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: When Daken is the character in the story you most empathize with, you know you’re in trouble.

Infinity Countdown #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: It seems as though the Infinity Stones are finally in the hands of the people who are meant to protect them from whatever threat is coming in the Infinity War.

Justice League #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. There is so much happening in this issue in terms of the Legion of Doom taking down the JL, but it’s a slower moment toward the beginning of the issue, about Gorilla Grodd’s origin, that was particularly well-done.
NickZ: This book is titled Justice League but I think Scott Snyder is secretly siding with the Legion of Doom.

Star Trek TNG Terra Incognita #1 (IDW)
NickZ: Excited for the third chapter in what has been an incredible Next Generation story but I am a little disappointed that they don’t have J.K. Nice to get some background on one of the new Challengers (Krunch) but the main story is a bit confusing and the number of characters make it difficult to get of a sense of whom to focus on. I am excited abou the return of Skartaris, though.

Ninjak #9 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: This doesn’t seem like the Livewire in Harbinger Wars II but this was still one great team-up!

Shadowman #5 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Taking us back to see how this all started in one hell of a story!

Skyward #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This issue had more or Willa’s dad who stole the show! Saladin Ahmed is writing one hell of supernatural crime drama while Sami Kivela and Jason Wordie bring it to life!
Martin: 4/5 stars. The mystery deepens, Abbott finds out more about who (or what?) is after her, and reconnects with a variety of characters from the past issue, all combined with a unique, but very fitting, art style. And Abbott listens to John Coltrane on #vinyl!

Avengers #690 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This is that classic Avengers storytelling that ushers them into a new era! Great art, but why Rebirth keeps putting Tim Drake through the ringer, I’ll never know. Between being trapped out of time, facing his evil future self, and now being controlled by Ulysses, it seems someone at DC doesn’t like him.

Doctor Strange #389 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Donny Cates writes a damn good Doctor Strange! That last page looked painful. Can’t wait for Flash War now
Martin: 4/5 stars. Lots going on in this “bridge” issue between the Grodd and the Flash War arcs. The reunion of “OG” Wally with Iris was very touching, and nicely sets up the next arc. Is it heresy to say that I enjoy Viktor Bogdanovic’s art on this title more than his predecessor? The flashback scenes are slowly starting to develop more of Honor’s background, which this series desperately needs.

Teen Titans #19 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Things wrap up nicely but that last page gets us ready for No Justice!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The Beast Boy arc finale sends this version of the Teen Titans off on a whimper. The story just didn’t have much weight to it, and while it could have been used as a growth opportunity for some of the characters, particularly Damian, it wasn’t.

Terrifics #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Yawn. There are great moments of humor, action, and character development in this issue.

Titans Annual #2 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. This series has become one of DC’s worst titles, due to odd decisions like the Justice League breaking up the team, characters acting like jerks to each other, & other characters not being seen at all. Now I say returns because this is the third series in the world of Black. However, if you haven’t read the original mini-series or even America’s Sweetheart then you might need a recap. Something that this issue could have used to ease any new readers into a sense of familiarity with the world they are about to step into. Not everyone who picks this up has read the story from the first series and it would just have helped a bit.

The story wastes no time in getting started as we’re quickly thrown into an assassination attempt on the first empowered senator. The pacing and action beats pull you in as you’re introduced (or reintroduced) to Anansi and Hoodrat then hits a full stop with a reveal that slams Anansi just as hard. This is where the writers open up the story with a reveal that ties to the title of the series while adding several more layers to the narrative and Anansi. A character who seems like two different people depending on whether or not he’s in costume. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays into his development and the overall narrative later on.

As far as the art goes, Smith and Roberson kick things off with some dynamic panels that move the action sequence almost perfectly for eight pages. Every panel builds on the next and we get to see how skilled a fighter Anansi is along with Hoodrat’s abilities. The dialogue is sparse during the action which lets you just focus on how cool the sequence is. However, there is another huge action sequence towards the end that seems to suffer from too much going on and the flow of the story gets jumbled a bit. That aside there’s a nice overall animated style that moves the narrative along.

Despite the initial hiccups for new readers Widows and Orphans takes the story of Black to the next level. So whether you’re a new reader or not this is a series you’ll want to get into and enjoy superhero stories outside of the regular capes and tights books out there.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Out in the Wilds: Launch event of ‘The Wilds’ Comic Series

Kaos Blac

Black Mask

Humor

Interviews

Kaos Blac

Store Signings

Uncategorized

banner

Black Mask Studios

Corpus: A Comic Anthology of Bodily Ailments

Danny Lore

Dawn

Emily Pearson

Femme

Fiyah Magazine

Forbidden Planet

Gay

Jim Campbell

LGBTQ

Marissa Louise

Nadi Shammas

Natasha Allegri

NYC

Octavia Butler

Queer

representation matters

Signing

The Wilds

Vita Ayala

Wednesday night was a homecoming of sorts for writer Vita Ayala and editor Danny Lore. After years of working off and on at Forbidden Planet NYC, Danny currently is working there, they finally were able to both take that step away from the counters an sit behind the magical space that is a comic event signing table. As a former colleagues at times they both worked at the comic shop so its just heart swelling to see them take this step. Not to say Forbidden Plant has been a slouch in the creator/former employee pool with Matt Rosenberg, Ra’Chaun Rogers, Joe Hughes, Alec Llewellyn, James “Cricket” Colter among others, but these two are a unique pair to say the least. They were known as the “twins”. Who in all the multiverses would ever dream that two people could look so similar and be so attuned to each other, and end up working in the same comic shop of all places.

Their introduction is legendary. Vita was a off-an-on employee who had just finished up their last stint at the Planet over one summer and little did they know that their literal replacement was going to apply for a job at the shop in their absence. Danny would get confused for and called “Vita” for months to come until Vita returned to find out who the doppelganger was. For me the spider clone was Vita because at the time I only knew Danny. With a look, a point, “you” and a sizing up it was a clear they were destined to be eternal anime rivals/friends.

Which brings us all the way up to now and the release of Black Mask Studios The Wilds. The Wilds is a post apocalyptic world with what can be best described as flower zombies, at least on the surface. I delved further into the background of the book with Danny and Vita and we laugh our asses off all along the way.

L to R: Danny Lore and Vita Ayala, thankfully they made incremental differences to differentiate themselves.

Kaos Blac: So this is a homecoming of sorts?

Danny Lore: Well I’ll be back here tomorrow.

Kaos Blac: True. But now both of you are together on this creator owned book, The Wilds, tell me about your meteoric rise.

Vita Ayala: Meteoric rise? (laughs) Well hopefully this is only the beginning and our star will continue to ascend, in the night sky, but we were presented with the opportunity to tell a story that was important to us and we thought would be something that was needed out in the world. You didn’t see a lot of books like this one in terns of being apologetically upfront about being inclusive, tackling harder subject and its really pretty. (Vita smirks) The reception has been incredibly positive its actually really humbling and we are really honored and and grateful for everyone for everyone for being so positive towards the book.

DL: Man you took all the good answers, like you just had the check list of every answer I could possibly give.

VA: Extra credit answers!

DL: Alright we’re doing the extra credit round? (we all laugh) I just think that when V brought me onto this it was an already phenomenal team telling a really clever and brilliant story, because I can talk for hours about how clever and brilliant are two different things, and just the opportunity to help that in any way shape of form and rise along side V and tell more and better stories – (looks at Vita)

VA: This is an anime rivalry so i’m putting out a book then they’ll put out a book and it’ll be better, then i’m gonna have to go back and figure out how to do a better book which is just gonna go back and forth but then we are also editing each others books – so its intense. This rivalry is going to go on for a long time.

DL: I’m really excited for the –

VA: The tournament.

DL: The tournament, ha, but when we make the pitching process taking an entire anime season. five episodes for just writing out the concept and the tag line will be really dope.

KB: So taking that little bit of information I take it that Danny you are currently creating your own book? Is it in the works, is it something in the works right now that Vita is working on as a editor?

DL: The answer to that is if we stop working we die. We can’t not be working. So whatever that ends up meaning it is what it is.

VA: Being a creator means you are always in the process of creating something weather or not somebody has picked it up is a different story but Danny and I have been working on stuff forever and we’ll be constantly pitching – for the rest of our lives because otherwise we can’t pay our rent, so yeah. Danny is working on something I will be apart of. Just then, during my interview the father of Nadia Shammas, editor of Corpus: A Comic Anthology of Bodily Ailments, stops by with some snacks, regrets that Nadia couldn’t make the event but on the upside gave the good news that the book was just funded. The comic community can really be a family affair. I say this to highlight Danny’s mom straightened up the table after Nadia’s dad dropped off some flyers for the anthology in which Vita is one of the contributing writers. Vita also has work in This Nightmare Kills Fascist, The Secret Loves of Geeks, and Twisted Romance.

KB: Any words about your story in this upcoming Anthology?

VA: It’s autobiographical, its gonna be a pretty long form one in terms of anthologies – but not the longest. It is very personal I’m very open and venerable in this story and I hope folks can connect to that. A crash is heard down an aisle of the store, we all look pissed: force of habit means we’re ready to pick it all up.

VA: That sounded like a whole thing of buttons getting knocked over. Ill be working with Dave Stoll who is an incredible artist. Nadia the person who spearheaded all of this will be editing the book – Are you in this book?

DL: I’m actually not I’m just Nadia’s biggest cheer leader. I think this concept is incredibly important and not just to Nadia but to a lot of creators and people who will be reading this book. I don’t think I’ve ever been as hyped about a book getting funded that I wasn’t a part of as when this book has been funded. Some more friends and a few strangers who are taking a chance on a new book come up to the table to get a book signed. During their signing we chat about the importance of queer identity and its importance. Well it was more of them looking at me like Roger from Sister Sister, because I should definitely know the answer already.

KB: So to continue, a lot of your books have a queer in them, a brand if you will. Why is Queer your brand.

VA: I have been told all my life that if I wanted to see that something that I should do it and I took that as a challenge because I was just tired of peoples mouths just running. I also think that beyond being a hash tag representation matters I think that I spent my time as a professional writing stories that would of been important to me in different stages in my life. It definitely would of mad e a huge difference to see queer characters – portrayed at all let along queer characters that are female or designated female at birth or femme in ways that were also exploitative or the villain. I think that would of done a lot towards A. me figuring out who I am, B. also it gets really hard hen the only portrayals of you are negative if they exist at all or a dead body. As a Brown person that is true as well as being a Queer person. I write for younger me.

DL: For me its important because as I’m sitting there [thinking of all the things] I wish I could see, I think about how many other creators are in the same situation. I sit there and think somebody is thinking the same thing right now and maybe what they need is that permission by seeing someone else doing it because that tells you there is an audience its the same reason I work on Fiyah magazine, why work on Vita’s stuff is because maybe some other creator needs to write that story I’m dying to read is to know that there is an audience out there.

VA: Just playing off of that when I was young I gave up writing for a while, I’ve been writing since I was young, since I learned how to read at ten, (laughs), I got into a really dark place and I gave up all the things that I love. I gave up reading, I gave up writing and then a teacher put a copy of Dawn by Octavia Butler in my hands and it completely changed my life. I saw someone, like me, writing stories that I would love to see and immediately I was like ‘there is a place for me, I can do this thing’ so that is also a big motivation for me.

(l to r) Cartoonist and fellow former employee James “Cricket” Colter and Danny Lore

KB: So in closing any parting words about The Wilds going forth? What should be expect coming up in the series?

VA: It’s mad gay. (laughs)

DL: Mad gay

VA: It has a lot to say metaphorically but it also has a lot t say visually. The art team is incredible. Emily [Pearson], Marissa [Louise], Jim [Campbell], and Natasha [Alterici] on the covers did an amazing job not just portraying the things that I had to say but also incorporating themselves in the book. So visually this is a beautiful book. So if you don’t like the words, at least its pretty to look at.

DL: For me what I find having the benefit of being able to see it in process it’s such a wonderful book about exhaustion on a lot of different levels. A spiritual, racial, gender and sexuality exhaustion and seeing a story about that in a way that is not just for you to feel bad about the characters not fulfilling this guilt thing. It like seeing yourself and you don’t feel bad for seeing yourself and that’t what the readers have to look forward to.

VA: Also flower zombies.

DL: Lots of flower zombies

(l to r foreground) Danny Lore, Vita Ayala and Jeff Ayers manager of Forbidden Planet NYC

The first issue of The Wilds is out now so ask your local comic shop to orderit if it’s not in stock.

A special ECCC exclusive cover of issue one is also on sale with proceeds going to Puerto Rican relief aid.

Kaos Blac

Black Mask Reviews: Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart

InfiniteSpeech

Black Mask

Indie

Infinite Speech

Reviews

America's Sweetheart

Black

Black Superheroes

David Sharpe

Jennifer Johnson

Kwanza Osajyefo

Sho Murase

Tim Smith 3

Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart Writer: Kwanza Osajyefo Artist: Jennifer Johnson Letterer: David Sharpe Cover: Sho Murase When Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 created a world where only Black people have superpowers they opened up a brand new realm of possibilities of where that story could go. One that leaves the city streets for Montana and centers 15-year-old Eli Franklin who is coming into her own as the world’s first superhero and fear is gripping the country.

Where the original series hits hard and fast out the gate, America’s Sweetheart takes it’s time as Osajyefo introduces us to Eli. She is a much different protagonist than we met in Kareem that goes far beyond gender. Her entire worldview is drastically dissimilar to his which is a reason why she immediately wants to use her abilities to become a superhero and help others. Osajyefo keeps this journey of self discovery adventurous and full of heart while also addressing some topical issues along the way. He accomplishes this in a way that doesn’t beat you over the head with preachy moments but is quite organic and moves Eli’s story and it’s richer because of it. One area in particular does stand out and it’s how Eli is extended a certain amount of privilege due to her father but it’s when she decides to actually help people who look like her is when the powers that be take issue. All of this while Osejyefo cranks the superhero action all the way up and introduces a world threat and a foe worthy of Eli’s abilities.

America’s Sweetheart is also visually striking from the panel layouts to the art inside thanks to Jennifer Johnson. The first thing that I noticed about Eli’s overall design and something that made me smile was that she’s not drawn as some oversexualized teenager in a skimpy superhero costume. Considering how it could have gone down I’m happy to see writer and artist agreed on this look for the character. She’s a kid in her patriotic costume kicking butt and saving lives and not here to titillate. Though, considering how she got her costume it was one stressful looking scene and I was legit worried for the kid. The flashback sequences come off effortlessly in that classic nine panel layout style while some of the more action oriented parts are big and more dynamic. Johnson nails the character moments and enhances the narrative but it’s even better when we get to see the visual story play out with less dialogue to get in the way of the artwork. The final fight is actually DBZ worthy in it’s intensity and overall destruction on several continents!

Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart is worth picking up whether you read the original Black series or not. There is a slight payoff if you’re familiar with the source material but in no way is it required reading to enjoy America’s Sweetheart. This might be aimed at a younger audience but that doesn’t mean that the story isn’t enjoyable for older readers. The creative team isn’t here to insult your intelligence so you get a smart and exciting superhero story full of heart.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 1/31/18

Arnab

AfterShock Comics

Arnab

Black Mask

Chirpin' Tuesday Reviews

Columns

DC Comics

Image

Infinite Speech

Martin

Marvel

Nickz

Reviews

Valiant

Vertigo

140 or less

banner

Chirpin Reviews

Chirps

All-New Wolverine #30 (Marvel) NickZ: Laura has never been a very standout character to me, but her solving this problem in a very unWolverine-like way has really changed that for me. Busiek & Anderson continue to prove why Astro City is so special. A story about grief, loss, and the “normal” people who are affected by the actions of the super-powered heroes in their midst. Wonderful.

Avengers #678 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: What does Voyager bring to the story? Aside from her being non essential so far the rest is unfolding well and
NickZ: First Quicksilver and now Torchy? They are just thrashing all of my current favorite Avengers.

The Beauty #19 (Image)
NickZ: Like any new developing circumstance in society, there is always some evil shadowy group trying to use it to their advantage, and the Beauty is no different.

Black [AF]: America’s Sweetheart (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: The world of Black gets a new hero and it’s worth picking up and checking out America’s Sweetheart!

Bonehead #2 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: This is just crazy and I’m loving every single page of it!

Dark Knights Metal #5 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Spectacular Capullo art accompanies a great issue. Snyder does a great job depicting things at their bleakest, but that said, this issue does seem mainly like a set-up for the finale.
NickZ: Wonder Woman proves why she is such a bad ass character, and I really liked the role reversal of Batman being the one refusing to let Superman give up hope.

Deathstroke Annual #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Loved the issue but WHY DIDN’T TANYA JUST LEAVE A DAMN NOTE??!!

Defenders #9 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: When all the kick-ass ladies showed up s*** got real! Eddy Barrows does some neat layouts including using a film strip as a panel divider, and there’s a nice exploration of why Basil Karlo (Clayface) acts the way he acts.
NickZ: I’m not a fan of Clayface’s new origin. It wasn’t needed to explain his recent journey in this book, nor did it add anything of substance to it.

Eternity #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Kidnapping the child of the two of the most powerful beings in the galaxy comes with severe consequences. Can’t wait to see what’s next with these characters!

Flash Annual #1 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A great, and much-needed, Wally West (the original) story. Proves that we should have a second WW-focused Flash comic.
Infinite Speech: A lot of Wally West (original) whining and that old Flash villain comes back.

The Invincible Iron Man #596 (Marvel)
NickZ: Bendis is really doing a great job of equaling telling three great stories for three complex characters in one single comic.

Jean Grey #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: I’m not sure what this new development between teen Jean and Phoenix means for the future but to be perfectly honest, now that adult Jean is back, this Jean can go back to her own time. Her services are no longer needed.

Justice League America Doom Patrol #1 (DC)
NickZ: This was so bizarre! I think it would have worked better if it had been a crossover with the main Justice League instead of the B string.

Kino #3 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Loving everything about this aside from the extended amount of time in the fake reality. Though I’m pretty sure Meath is going to be ticked off when he wakes up.

Moon Knight #191 (Marvel)
NickZ: Moon Knight and his daughter laying on the floor listening to old vinyl Dazzler albums was the cutest thing ever!

Mystik U #2 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. While the characters are different from their typical origins, seeing a younger cast of DC’s magic-based characters interacting in a school setting is a refreshing change of pace.

Outcast #33 (Image)
NickZ: The tension is rising on both sides in anticipation of the inevitable war on the horizon.

Phoenix Resurrection #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: AT LONG LAST, JEAN GREY IS BACK! Before she can move forward Jean has to face the two most influential forces in her life, the Phoenix Force and Scott Summers. Needless to say, it’s a very power, beautiful, and bittersweet rebirth.

Silencer #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I like where this is headed so I’ll be sticking around a bit longer. Oh, and why haven’t we had a Talia Al Ghul series?
Martin: 4/5 stars. A very strong debut of a new character, complete with a surprise DC cameo and great art by Romita.
