For those looking for a fight just know that Stokoe makes great use of the time he has in the first half of the issue. He delivers a tightly woven origin that makes Thunderthighs feel less like the first boss in a video game and more like a fleshed out character worth getting to know. The build up is masterful through the narration of the Mo’s master as he dives into the history of his former student. It’s here where we learn that though Thunderthighs might have a humorous moniker he’s not be taken lightly.

From here things shift as Mo and Thunderthighs throw hands, feet, and of course…thighs in one of the most amazing and ridiculous martial arts fights in comics! Each panel made all that much better by Stokoe’s great artwork. This is where a lot of the story shines as the fight is a chaotic mess of destruction but also character development throughout the battle. The art conveys the power and ferocity of the fight with a high level of detail that will have you going back over the panels to check out the jaw dropping moments over and over again. One being the twist in the fight which is hilarious and disgusting. Thus setting the bar pretty high for whatever we have to look forward to in the next few issues.

If you’re looking for a straight up martial arts epic, understand that you’ll be getting that and much more with Orphan and the Five Beasts. Stokoe is providing a great story with both the narrative and the visuals while keeping this from being anything but a predictable kung fu tale. So if there was any doubt on whether or not to stay with the series this second issue demands you stay till the end!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Dark Horse Announces New Deluxe Edition ‘Overwatch’ Hardcover

InfiniteSpeech

Dark Horse

Infinite Speech

Video Games

Blizzard

overwatch

The Art of Overwatch

Tracer

The wait is over! However, we find out they took a different path after gaining the power needed to save the valley.

Stokoe grabs your attention with great art (which we’ll get into later), colorful characters, and several twists with the formula here. Mo’s master isn’t too likable but he’s quite pragmatic which might convince you to see his point of refusing to teach his art. Now the time we get with Mo herself is pretty great. From her opening training sequence to beginning her journey, we get a solid sense of her character and skills as a fighter. Stokoe also makes sure the background characters are just as entertaining and add a bit of comic relief while not making the story seem silly, though this might be a point of contention with some readers when you meet the first of the Five Beasts: Thunderthighs!

The visual storytelling is pure Stokoe greatness and everything about it fits securely with the narrative. The opening sequence is quiet and he allows the art alone to move things along. Mo’s stance and skill conveys power and fluidity that shows she’s pretty adept at using her long-spear. This scene builds to the tension quite well and things pick up from here. The shadowy character designs for the five villagers is simplistic but they look like they are constantly in motion. There’s a high level of detail throughout which makes for rich backgrounds and settings but it’s the action sequences that really help to kick things off. They’re kinetic and a full-on display of power and eye-catching fight scenes that are cinematic quality. Also, I was not expecting Thunderthighs at all and his full page reveal is hilarious! A mountain of a man who comes in riding on a horse who is under the weight of this guy. I haven’t felt more sorry for a horse since Rick’s in The Walking Dead.

Orphan and the Five Beasts is off to a great start with a first issue that executes in style. It boasts a strong narrative and artwork that practically leaps off the page so just know we’re in good hands with Stokoe’s latest adventure!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Cullen Bunn & Andrea Mutti Bring Horror To Dark Horse With ‘Parasomnia’

InfiniteSpeech

Dark Horse

Horror

Andrea Mutti

Cullen Bunn

Parasomnia

From acclaimed horror creators Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, Cyberpunk 2077 Trauma Team) and Andrea Mutti (Prometheus, Starship Down), alongside letterer Simon Bowland, comes the new nightmare-invoking miniseries Parasomnia. As dreams and reality blur together in growing panic, a ruthless cult seeks to break down the barrier even further and rule the land of dreams. Can our hero and his son return to the real world, or will they be trapped forever in limbo?

“Parasomnia is an eerie dark fantasy adventure. Part of it is set in our world–the waking world–and part of it is set… someplace else. A land of ruthless highwaymen and forgotten gods and fierce monsters. It’s a little bit sword and sorcery, a little bit mystery, a little horror, and a whole lot of action-adventure.

This is the beginning of what could be a long fantasy epic full of heroes and villains, mystery and horror. It really is a story that you can’t predict, because it can go anywhere. And I’m excited for readers to take the first steps along this path with us!” – Cullen Bunn

“In an apparently normal world, a desperate man, a woman searching for her missing son and a diabolical group of cultists hiding a terrible secret wander around. The world, when awake, seems full of colors…but as soon as the lights go out and you fall asleep, a different world appears from the shadows and only the man with no name can lead us out of the nightmare.”—Andrea Mutti

Parasomnia #1 (of four) arrives June 30, 2021, and is available for pre-order now through your local comic shop. I immediately appreciated Bunn’s writing because it was apparent even from that one issue that he was a storyteller unafraid to dive headlong into some fairly nuanced moral quandary and the internal turmoil afflicting his characters. Seeing his name on the cover of this book immediately brought a smile to my face and I am very pleased to confirm that Bunn has delivered yet again. Trauma Team is an unassuming indictment of the dystopian classism that is intrinsic to the genre’s punk underpinnings masquerading as an action-packed spectacle.

I initially stopped myself from reading Trauma Team when I received the review copy. I wanted to get some time in with the game to familiarize myself with the world and the context. Fortunately, as a player, our first run-in with Cyberpunk 2077’s trauma teams comes very early in the game. They are essentially urban medevacs deployed in Night City to high profile clientele as a result of widespread paramilitary clashes between corporations, crime syndicates, and street gangs. After a few missions, I felt more comfortable with the world-building and tenor of the universe, so it was time to dive into IDW’s version of Night City.

This graphic novel iteration is quintessentially cyberpunk. The subversive, anti-corporate slant and anti-consumerist aspersions are seamlessly integrated, enriching the narrative rather than distracting from it. The story follows trauma team medic Nadia, the sole survivor of an ambush during urban deployment. She must pass a psychological evaluation to return to work, but the experience has understandably rendered her numb and potentially disaffected. Here, Cullen Bunn offers a window into the mind of a dedicated trauma survivor at odds with her own mortality. Feelings of regret for her comrades are presented at odds with her sense of duty. Is she ready for a return to service? Can her new team rely on her experience going forward?

This depth of internal conflict can be a very delicate picture to paint thematically and I appreciate that Bunn and artist Miguel Valderrama give the subject appropriate attention with well-paced and framed panels. The work from this team melds seamlessly, as Valderrama punctuates Bunn’s tight plotting and colorist Jason Wordie’s punchy transitions with slick genre callbacks and visceral combat. Wordie’s vibrant but moody contributions are pitch-perfect, rendering contemplative scenes with due gravity while ratcheting up the intensity of action sequences. Quiet, introspective moments and haunting apparitions are interwoven with a hard sci-fi edge that delivers well on the themes of Cyberpunk 2077. This is just one example of so many stories ripe to be mined from this burgeoning universe. To any seeking further immersion into the mythos of Night City, Trauma Team is a fitting expansion of the lore.

Christian Davenport
cable201@comicattack.net

Dark Horse Announces ‘Hellboy Universe: The Secret Histories’

Admin

Dark Horse

News

Abe Sapien

Hellboy

Mike Mignola

Rasputin

Fans of the Hellboy universe know that Rasputin is the man responsible for bringing Hellboy to Earth, but when did the mad monk find his calling to bring about Ragna Rok? Flaunting ironclad noir trappings dripping with incisive Americana, Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido breathed life into a resplendent contemporary deconstruction of the U.S. of A, replete with anthropomorphized characters that seem more human with every turn of the page. For his uncanny perception, Canales jumps in with both feet, tackling untouchable upscale elites, inexorable social stigma, overt white supremacy, and even fanatical McCarthyism with aplomb. Each of the five cases featured in Blacksad: Collected Stories touches on different aspects of the social and political landscape, shining a light on the underbelly of a period many consider to be the height of American prosperity.

Thinking back to Mirka Andolfo’s Unnatural, with her approach I wondered whether the anthropomorphic basis for the character designs was devised as a calculated tool to distance the reader from existing racial nuances and make the characters more immediately accessible. In effect, any preconceptions or biases could be shed unconsciously and the material engaged more directly. With Blacksad, Canales and Guarnido lean into those same preconceptions and biases instead of shedding them, aligning character design intentionally with animalistic traits like strength, aggression, cunning, and submissiveness. We are given clear indicators of who are the alphas, who cannot be trusted, and who is a material threat, but in a way that is wholly organic and engrossing.

Though few of the twists and turns are truly surprising, there is no faulting narrative or design in precipitous revelation. We learn what we expect to learn of these characters based on their environments, predispositions, and patterns by following our deductions to their logical conclusions, without the offense of hackneyed plotting. As readers, we feel empowered to assess individuals and events based on attention to superlative detail. This is a product of masterful narrative execution, particularly in this medium. To not be coddled or overexplained to, but gently reminded of details previously eclipsed by the urgency of imminent catastrophe, we are afforded identification with our introspective gumshoe. We come to inhabit his procedural discovery and share in his eventual elucidation.

At NYCC 2020 I missed an opportunity to interview Canales and Guarnido to discuss the impending release of Blacksad: Under the Skin, but I was profoundly thrilled to know that the world they created would be expanded into a new medium, potentially reaching a new audience. This duo has painted a broad and rapturous canvas with the living, breathing denizens of urban enclaves and backwater counties, imbued with uncommon vitality by Guarnido’s exquisite panel compositions. His facial expressions and emotional articulation are truly second to none in this collection. That the objective quality of Blacksad’s masterfully cinematic execution seems entirely effortless is truly telling of the fine granularity in Canales and Guarnido’s synchronicity. The never-before-published story features the adventures of a giant ape.

“Mike Mignola posted his Baltimore vs. Giant Ape ‘Year of Monsters’ cover on Facebook one day,” said co-writer Christopher Golden. “I think it was Ben Stenbeck who replied with ‘I wish we’d done that story,’ and I immediately said, ‘it’s not too late.’ Mike was totally up for it, of course. The original 1933 ‘King Kong’ is one of my favorite films of all time, so this was simultaneously our love letter to that movie and a chance to do something incredibly fun with Baltimore. It was a treat to get to work with Ben again, particularly on something that is like a little gift to Baltimore fans—and to ourselves.”

“I always wanted to come back to Baltimore in some way, especially on a story as fun and action-packed as this, based on Mike’s brilliant ‘Year of Monsters’ Baltimore cover,” said Ben Stenbeck. “It’s not King Kong, just a giant ape. I’m really glad I’ve had this chance to revisit the world of Baltimore.”

In addition to the new story, the second BALTIMORE OMNIBUS collects Baltimore: The Witch of Harju #1-#3, Baltimore: The Wolf and the Apostle #1-#2, Baltimore: The Cult of the Red King #1-#5, Baltimore: Empty Graves #1-#5, and Baltimore: The Red Kingdom #1-#5.

Finally armed with the identity of the being responsible for the vampire plague, Baltimore and his band of allies take on the evil around them with a new fervor.
