A wasted opportunity.

Justice League Odyssey #17 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Truth be told, I was prepared to give up on this series before reading this latest issue. This is a fun title, and it’s great seeing some many old-school characters back in DC’s monthly schedule. That said, we’re 3 issues in and the overall story hasn’t revealed itself, & the bit with Damian was underwhelming.

The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage #2 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Some great art, and that’s the only thing that contributes to this score being as high as it is. This is the first Lemire story I haven’t liked. Another solid issue as we see the reign of Captain/King Cold.
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’ve always been a fan of Flash’s Rogues Gallery, & this story gives us some good background/context of Captain Cold & his sister, Golden Glider. There are some great moments in this book, including the opening sequence and, finally, the development of Uncle Sam’s character. By far the best ongoing story arc in any of the current 3 Justice League titles, and & of the best at DC overall. The focus on horror elements works really well for this title, & creepy images complement the story.

The Last God #2 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. The writing & word building in this is really great, but what lifts the score even higher is the art by Ricardo Federici, who creates some of the eeriest & most sinister creatures in comics. It feels like a great #dnd setting.

Shazam #8 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The concept of the 7 magical lands is great, as is the focus on family & the “team up” of Dr. Sivana, Mr. Mind, & Black Adam. Less successful is the introduction and focus on Billy’s birth father, but little has been revealed so far

Supergirl Annual #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Annuals aren’t typically essential, but it would be a mistake to skip this. Venditti really gets into Kara’s head as she is infected by the Batman Who Laughs, & seeing her thoughts change is unsettling.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Infinite Crisis #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. As with all of these “tales from…” titles so far, this one is a mixed bag. I love alternate versions and “Elseworld” style tales, but the concept is getting a bit worn. I guess I like a bit of fun in my #comics.

Terrifics #22 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bizarro-speak is one of those polarizing elements of comics, with many people falling into the “hate it” camp. Great moments involving Jefferson/Black Lightning and Katana, as well as with Cassandra & Duke. I haven’t followed Lemire’s Black Hammer universe since the debut issues a few years ago, but this series has made me interested in checking it out again, which I supposed is the whole point.

Catwoman #17 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Joelle Jones is carving out a nice spot for Catwoman that is all Selina! The characterization of Mr. Freeze is a bit better here – I like villains who are more complex vs mustache-twirling idiots. What is off is Nora’s characterization, although I suspect that has to do with Luthor’s “gift.”

Event Leviathan #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Total waste of time and money. There’s tons of other comics to pick from than this mediocre mystery.
Martin: 3/5 stars. I really liked the IDEA of this, & I was intrigued by the spy elements & the different kind of story I thought this was telling. I loved the clandestine activities with Lois & the various heroes. But, this ending was a let down.

Fallen Angels #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hill drops so much nuance and complexity here that he made me want to see how Kwannon’s journey ends! We’re back to a Flash book without a sense of fun and hope that epitomizes the Flash (or, at least, USED to). I also don’t like seeing the Rogues become murderers – that’s not their style. Still, the story is engaging with good art.

Gotham City Monsters #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This is such a fun, creative concept, but it’s weighted down a bit by some very deep, deep references that almost seem required to appreciate the bigger story. Even with that, though, it’s one of the most fun DC books right now.

Justice League Odyssey #15 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The focus on Jessica Cruz has been good, but she’s a completely different character from the one introduced in Rebirth. I’m all for character growth, but I miss some of her quirks. But, this title is better now vs at launch.

Morbius #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I took a chance because I’m a fan of Vita’s work and this one did not disappoint so it looks like I’ll be sticking around for a few more issues.

Robotech: Remix #2 (Titan)
Infinite Speech: The new twist on an old fave is refreshing and worth picking up.

Ronin Island #8 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Greg Pak does it again with another fantastic coming of age story!

Superman #17 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This is a tough one to score, but honestly nothing really happens, as this is a lead-time to the big reveal coming later in December. But, Maguire’s art is great, and there are some great moments with Kara & Zod.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. These 1-shots have been a bit hit-and-miss, but this is 1 of the better ones to date. The juxtaposition of Dove, Lobo, Sinestro, and a surprise character (which makes perfect sense) is great.

Wonder Woman #82 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. While the fight scene, & Batman’s ultimate deception were a fun read, the “true” villain of “City of Bane” seems to be Thomas Wayne, and I’m done with him.
