Being an avid fan and collector of anything Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I’ve been known to occasionally throw it down when it comes to a particular Slayer piece. This jaw-dropping Throne of the Slayer Maquette is no exception. A limited edition of only 400, this maquette stands at a whopping 17.5″ tall. It’s utterly massive, but in a good way.
This Buffy Maquette comes in three pieces: the throne with the Slayer attached, the heavy base, and the Sideshow exclusive Slayer Scythe (as pictured underneath the throne). Because this statue also weighs over thirteen pounds, carving out a place sturdy enough to house it was quite the challenge. Yes, you read that correctly: thirteen solid pounds of pure unadulterated Slayer.
Though the likeness present in Buffy’s face is extraordinary, by far the best part of this piece is the throne itself. Each detail is intricately carved with finesse. Even the back is just as impressive as everything else, which is quite unusual in statue furniture. It truly captures the definition of regal, which is fitting for the so-called Queen of the Slayers. The sculpt throughout this piece is as close to perfect as a human can achieve.
Like I mentioned before, the likeness in Buffy’s sculpt is amazing. I’ve always found a lot of the statues slightly miss what makes Sarah Michelle Gellar look like Sarah Michelle Gellar. She’s more than just a tiny blonde with a penchant for stakes. In this statue, I can actually articulate specific details that instantly make her recognizable, as well as an expression that is very her. I’m very satisfied with the degree of likeness. Even though I’m also fond of the cartoon maquette series, I’m glad that this statue depicts realistic likeness as opposed to exaggerated stylization.
Lastly, the paint job on this maquette is quite nice, but may be the only weak point. I have no complaints on the coloring of the Throne; the look of aged metal was achieved perfectly with the right amount of shading and shine. While Buffy’s face and hair are nicely painted, I feel as if her red dress could have used a little more detail, maybe a little more shading. The sculpt is fantastic so it’s almost not needed, but I think a little more shading would add a nice three dimensional touch. With that said, however, the throne and sculpt is so intricate, that the simplicity of the dress and body actually makes a nice contrast.
Currently, this statue is sold out at the official Sideshow website, but there is a wait list offered that will usually guarantee you a future piece. I’ve personally never utilized Sideshow’s waiting list feature, but I might with the Daft Punk Tron figures already being sold out!
I give this statue the highest of ratings. Though it is quite expensive and a bit on the REALLY large size, this maquette is by far the best Buffy piece in existence. With incredible likeness, regality, and exquisite detail, the Throne of the Slayer is well worth the steep price tag.
