B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune #1

The first thing you need to know about B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune is that regardless of how much fun you might be having, you shouldn’t get too attached to any of the characters. That’s because the fate of each one is randomly decided by the spin of a totem. Meaning that all of these characters are on borrowed time from one issue to the next.
Now with that being said, it’s time to get into the story here as the Squad takes on one of the most outrageous missions anyone could be asked to go on. It consists of bad guys, Cambodia, inbred mogwui (think Gizmo from Gremlins), and a double cross that’s all wrapped up in the craziest insurance scheme ever. Just know that no matter how wild things get Burgoon makes it all work and gives us some quality humor along the way. There were a few moments where a character or two would ham it up a bit too much, but you can take solace in the fact that he or she just might die in the next issue, and whoever Burgoon chooses to replace them will be much cooler.
Monardo’s art really carries the tone of the story, and there’s usually something even funnier lying in wait somewhere in the panels. One of my favorite scenes would have to be MacGoogle getting outraged that someone is using his tablet charger and delivers a message that everyone should take heed to. The style itself is perfect for this type of story, and it’s going to be fun to see how many more visually humorous moments she comes up with as the series continues.
Comics like this are much needed because we can get so caught up in our big events and melodramatic spandex wearing characters that we forget to just kick back and have a good time. Well, Eben is here to make sure that things get way out of hand in B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune, and that you have a good time from start to finish. Sure this type of story isn’t for everyone, but if you don’t mind a bit of levity then you should give it a read.

I bought this comic book after speaking to Eben personally. This comic can get you hooked in a minute. Yes, this comic is not meant for everyone. Though, it has a style of comedy mixed with the seriousness of the nature they are in. I definitely recommend it if you are into these styles of comics or even a first time reader such as myself.
