After last issue’s revelation (that some kind of spirit or demon is terrorizing the old house that Liz and the Professor came to investigate), we see Liz wandering around the grounds outside of the house. Liz and her new friend are startled by voices crying out, then they are confronted by a bloody apparition. After fleeing back to the house, they tell the Professor and father Yafides what happened. Later, as things calm down, the Professor and Liz retreat to a local hotel. Liz ends up sneaking out to be with her new friend. The young boy tells Liz that father Yafides told him and his dad all about Liz. Liz informs him that father Yafides only told them part of her story. The part of her living with the B.P.R.D., but not the part of how she came to be in the care of the Professor.
I have to say that this book is very engaging from a visual standpoint, as well as the story itself. I’m drawn to mystical/magical stories to begin with, but even I didn’t think I’d like this book as much as I do. The artwork really impresses me. Specifically, how the color combinations work so well together. One page can have very dark colors like black and brown, but also have a bright red for Liz’s hair. Not like Ronald McDonald mind you, but just very vibrant in contrast to the dark scenery. And just look at that cover, it’s gorgeous.
Mignola and Allie do a fantastic job in this issue revealing Liz Sherman’s background. Even the new friend is taken aback slightly when he learns her history of how she came to live with the Professor. Additionally, I like the relationship between Liz and the Professor. He tries to be a father figure to Liz, but she isn’t having it, and is quite rebellious. She even treats father Yafides in a very coarse manner. The only person she seems to warm up to quickly is her new young boy friend. Great cast of characters, and Mignola and Allie really are playing them well off of each other. I for one can’t wait to see the conclusion, although I feel it may be a bit rushed with only one more issue left..
