Lumberjanes was sold to me with the premise being part X-Files, part Gravity Falls, part Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a girl scout group of friends, so needless to say, I was intrigued. That pitch along with that name sold me on it. So when I finally got to take a look inside, what did I think? Let’s find out!
So I loved this book and am looking forward to more. Another thing I forgot to mention in selling it to me was the art. I loved it and it’s cute as can be, while also having some really weird creature designs that still remain cute. Take the words away and you’d still get a great story; that’s strong art. That is art you can live by.
I’m glad the words are there, though. This is a weird world of three-eyed foxes, bear women, and a lumberjack-themed scout camp. I think we’d all be in a better world where our kids are taught to fight off strange creatures. We can all agree with that, right? This series has a lived-in world that makes it easy to pick up on these kids and their personalities. By page three a battle breaks out, and we aren’t even really sure as to how we got to this point, so we have to go forward to see this fight resolved and find out what is going on.
This feels like a great show made into a comic, but there is no show of which to speak. If you are a fan of shows like Gravity Falls and Adventure Time with their strange encounters, then you should be picking up Lumberjanes. This is a number one issue with no tie-ins to movies, TV shows, or pre-existing characters, and it has me so excited and feeling like it’s an old favorite by the time I finished the issue. Go get it. Chop chop. Sorry, I had to get in at least one lumberjack pun.
