The SECOND annual graphic novel giveaway. So let’s answer your first question: “What do you mean ‘second’? When did the first one happen?” Well, not to be rude, but a year ago, clearly. Hence the word “annual”… but to be more specific, the first giveaway took place during some of the heady summer days of the second year of the Covid pandemic. As you may remember, among many other sad things, there was a reported rise in attacks on people in the Asian American community and followed the nationwide marches protesting the ongoing issue of police brutality and militarization in America.

This Book Can Be Yours.

So in an effort to offer support to the various causes struggling for equity and freedom, one of our contributing editors decided that they would hold a fundraiser to benefit some of their favorite charities. The editor released a statement on their personal Instagram offering complete sets of graphic novels to people who donated to those specific charities and emailed them the proof of their donations. To their delight and surprise, they helped raise nearly $900 for AAPI and Black Lives Matter charities. A year later and the Supreme Court has decided that half of the population of America should have less bodily autonomy and fewer rights, so we at ComicAttack.net think the time has come again to stand in support of our communities by helping the great organizations get the funding they need to continue to fight for all of our rights.

Full Series/Multiple Volumes Are Available

Now we imagine your second question is going to be: How do I get some of these graphic novels? It’s simple: below is a list of charities that advocate for and support everything from the rights of sex workers to the mental health of immigrants in AAPI communities to Black Lives Matter to voting and reproductive rights. All you have to do is pick your favorite charity and donate the amount of money that matches or exceeds the suggested donation of $15 then choose the book or books you’d like us to send to you (up to two books per donation). Then all you have to do is send the confirmation of your donation to Comicattack2009@gmail.com with your name and the address you’d like the books to be sent to and VOILA you will have made a difference in the world and you will get a bunch of amazing writing and art at a profound discount.

Can’t decide which titles to choose? Let us know and we will give you two books AT RANDOM! It’s guaranteed to be something good.

Shipping times will depend on when confirmation of your donation is received as well how quickly we can get things out to you. We’re not Amazon, we’re just a bunch of writers trying to do something good so bear with us.

The upshot is that shipping is on us.

Books Are All In Very Good To Near Mint Condition

In all seriousness, things are rough in the world right now and we know many of us go to comics, sci-fi and all manner of pop media as an escape from the constant barrage of bad news and under the normal circumstances, that is not only a fine way to manage stress but also a healthy one as well. Unfortunately, these recent years can be classified as a lot but “normal” hasn’t been one for some time now and turning away from those in need to bury your nose in a book or a film as the bombs drop down around our heads is not a good look. With the sheer amount of problems in the world it could become very easy to feel powerless and to lose yourself and despair because you simply don’t know what to do. Do this.

Marvel/DC/Image and Indie Publishers Are All Available

For very little of your time and for not a large amount of money (which you were always going to spend on stuff exactly like this anyway) you can help make things better. You don’t need to be on the front lines to make a difference, all you really have to do is to lend your support for the people who are doing the work and you’ve done your part to make the world a better place. Despite all the doom we download in our heads from social media and all of the horrors we see in the news, know with complete certainty that we are not too far gone to be saved if we save each other.

You can find the list of books on offer here and below are the charities.

Give what you can and have an amazing day.
Food trucks ready to feed the growing crowds struggled to make their way into the Javits Center’s parking lot, for want of the ability to navigate the over-dense sea of Otaku waiting for them. Some exasperated press covering the event remarked that they’d “…never seen anything like it”: the sheer numbers of people waiting to get in. Personally, the exhaustion at the hordes of Bakugo, Himiko Toga and Tanjiro cosplayers speckled in a dark gray ocean of screen-printed hoodies and bookbags with Skullcandy Headphones hanging off of them was old hat. I’ve been attending New York Comic Con since ’06 and covering it with ComicAttack.Net since 2011. I’d seen these crowds before but not for an Anime convention in New York City. It became clear over the weekend that AnimeNYC was doing things differently and in many ways, better.

AnimeNYC is a relatively new convention to New York City. Created by LeftField Media in 2017 (the same people who host AwesomeCon in DC), their president, Greg Topalian, was former senior vice president of Reed Exhibitions where he founded New York Comic Con in 2006. AnimeNYC bills itself as a three-day experience that “…showcase[s] the best of Japanese pop culture in the biggest city in America.” Boasting a large number of unique exhibits, exclusive screenings, extensive panels with appearances by Japanese creators, American voice actors and some of the most elaborate cosplayers in the tristate area, AnimeNYC is extremely attractive on paper. It’s when your boots are on the ground though and the tall glass doors of the Jacob Javits Center opens that you get to see if the press hype is real, and it’s on the show floor where LeftField Media’s pedigree with New York conventions really shines.

The floor space, lacking the shear glut of vendors present at NYCC, was opened up wide to hundreds of shoppers and onlookers, each with enough personal space to not have to be on top of each other. Everyone could comfortably look down the more densely packed aisles for the vendors’ wares without having to venture into them. Truly, I have never seen so many people having so little difficulty finding their misplaced friends and partners in a convention hall. At times, the crowds felt like the ones at trade shows, with inquisitive faces investigating products for the next quarter, but at other points the excitement of a fan convention was present in excess. Dancefloors were opened up for energetic attendees and multiple DJs were spinning Anime themes songs carefully remixed to the point of being a bop. Behind every surgical mask was a set of world-worn yet excited eyes. What truly took me by surprise was the effortlessly diverse population of attendees. There were enough queer kids, POC’s, people who self-identify as neurodivergent and physically handicapped present to swing an election in a red state. This is not to say I didn’t run into a literal Karen in a Kimono harassing the press office and heard about another on a panel, but those experiences were virtually non-existent compared to the kinds of nonsense you find yourself dealing with at your typical comic convention. You know the dudes online who are kind of the worst? The guys who complain about diversity in media and for whom the phrase “cosplay is not consent” was created? I’m not saying they weren’t present at AnimeNYC but if they were around, they were outnumbered.

To be clear though this was not a shining utopia despite the organizer’s best efforts. It’s ultimately people that make a con comfortable and rest assured there were no cuddle puddles to be found anywhere on the premises. The same kids with social anxieties that use anime as a way to cope with a world that doesn’t always get them were still out in force with all the prickly edges and unintentional rudeness you’d expect from people codified as “Nerds”. For instance, the board game lounge was an amazing idea for a different group of strangers, if there were also a bar on the premises. As it stands, Brain Game’s table top area served mostly as the gateway to the multi-service cosplay area, replete with open spaces for staged photos and an entire station of eager and knowledgeable cosplay crafts people acting as costume EMTs. There were rows and rows of tables designed to be the perfect place to mix and mingle with the otaku community, where you could borrow games as straight forward as Uno, as socially dangerous as Cards Against Humanity or as elaborate as Settlers of Catan and then take a laminated blue or red sign to announce to all passersby that you were either looking for people to play with or looking to learn how to play. Functionally, the blue “looking for players” sign did more to keep people away from your table than a hacking cough and a MAGA hat. I found this out firsthand when I conducted an experiment to see how welcoming the lounge really was. I gave up an ID to the organizers, got a cool looking game and some hand sanitizer, found a half empty table and grabbed a seat.

I then posted the blue sign up to announce my intentions and started a stopwatch to see how long it would take to make new friends. For nearly 30 minutes no one would even make eye contact with me. A table that started with four unconnected guys at a six-seat table emptied out to just me and stayed empty in a crowded room full of tired people with few other places to sit. At one point a group of four sat down one table over and mentioned amongst each other that they wanted to play the game I had. When I asked them if they wanted to play with me or even if they wanted me to just give them the game so they could play by themselves without me, they gave me the “smelly homeless guy asking for money on the subway” treatment, only to then go ask for another copy of the game from the organizers to find out I had the last one. In the end they all sat across from me, shooting me anxious, grimacing side eye and they struggled through Pandemic while trying to ignore my existence not playing the game the truly wanted because they didn’t feel comfortable enough to play with a stranger. I stopped the experiment at 28 minutes and 37 seconds feeling like the only box of raisins in a bag full of candy; it was a noble idea but if you know this crowd, you would have seen that coming.

The jittery, sometimes smelly fan boys, girls and thems that brought the “comic interested” such infamy, seems to have migrated away from Marvel and DC to find new homes in Crunchyroll and Shonen Jump. Once upon a time, those kids would have seemingly only been present in comic conventions and comic book stores, sustaining a category of pop culture being created explicitly with their sensibilities in mind. But Jesus Christ how times have changed. The counter culture I came of age in has moved so far center to the social norm that people’s grandmas are now arguing “Thanos was right” in Facebook shit posts. When I was a kid, I didn’t quite understand the allure of manga over comics but I always respected the punk energy of avoiding like the plague the way things are. Perhaps anime is the last transgressive frontier for young minds these days. When all your gangsta rap is made by upper middle-class white kids with face tats and you watched Captain America’s bestie choke out Iron Man’s mom on the big screen with your own parents, maybe the last subversive thing to do is start stanning animated almost porn in a language you will never speak.

At the end of the day AnimeNYC had the kind of convention experience that I’ve been longing for since even before the lockdown began. Instead of huge main stage panels hosting television actors plugging projects without the slightest whiff of comic book connection, there was a full-on concert playing some of the most exciting music from Japan, while huge screens showed off the gorgeous animated fight scenes for which they were created. Instead of seven different vendors selling nearly identical merchandise crowding up the show floor, there were car shows and Japan exclusive arcade machines and a booth that just straight-up sold hentai. The artist alley and the celebrity autograph booths were on the show floor, bringing back the novel idea that conventions are an opportunity to have everything you could want to do and see existing in the same physical space. For extra bonus points the staff were courteous and helpful and the prices for the debatably Asian food on-site didn’t feel like assault. Plus, I actually did make some new friends. After the most recent New York Comic Con I thought to myself that maybe I’m done with the scene for a while, all of the people and the drama wasn’t worth the exhaustion I felt at the end of the weekend. Well, I was still exhausted at the end of AnimeNYC weekend but all I want to do is queue back up on that big ass line and do it all again next weekend.

New “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” Trailer Breakdown

Cameron Crump

Cameron

Marvel

News

Perfect Cruelty

Previews

banner

Into the Spider-Verse

Miles Morales

Peter Parker

Sony Pictures

Spider Gwen

Spider-Ham

Spider-Man

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]h boy! New York Comic-Con is getting ready to touch down in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Center this week but swinging into town early is a brand new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse trailer giving out lots of new plot details (some might say too much), as well as showing off a lot more of the spider set pieces and fantastic animation that’s only been teased up until this point.

So how about we do a big old trailer breakdown and go over some of the new information we can glean from this latest offering from Sony Animation Studios.

1. Peter Parker’s Perspective
Unlike the previous trailers which have been largely teasers of the film as a whole or done from the perspective of Miles Morales and his story, this new trailer starts off from the perspective of Jake Johnson’s Peter Parker. Johnson brings his easy-going affable slacker persona that he made famous on shows like New Girl and in the recent comedy Tag to the role of the OG web swinger, stepping into the driver’s seat to reveal that the Peter Parker and this iteration is even further along in his career then he is depicted as in most Spider-Man cartoons and video games. In his own universe this Spider-Man enjoys the fame and notoriety that we would be familiar with in our own real world. Peter Parker in the trailer has comic books written about him, merchandising which are included but not limited to middle-of-the-road subpar popsicle, breakfast cereals, and t-shirts (Worn by adorable little girls of color the world over). This Spider-Man has even recorded a Christmas album which features such classics as “Spidey, it’s Cold Outside” “Joy to the World (That I just Saved) and It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like A Non-Denominational Holiday.

Our Peter Parker is a veteran of the superhero game. Having saved the world dozens of times by his own account and indeed pulling off the two-point conversion of actually getting the girl of his dreams, which seems to be a fashion model Mary Jane Watson, a version of Mary Jane which seems to have fallen out of favor as being a model is not considered a very empowered career for a woman. This could make this version of Peter Parker’s corner of the spider universe, way closer to Marvel Comic’s 616 version than almost any other depiction in recent memory. It is this veteran Parker that is going to be acting as a mentor to the Spider-Man at the heart of the narrative…

2. More Miles Morales!

We don’t get to see a whole lot of new information for Miles but we do get some more looks at his costume and peeks into his mentor-mentee relationship with Peter Parker. Miles’ father, played by the impossibly talented Mahershala Ali, is still hitting home those loving father/judgmental cop/kind of abusing his authority in problematic ways/dramatic irony problems with vigilantes notes that are necessary for Spider-Man family members. In addition we also get a flash of Miles’s mother play by the lovely Luna Lauren Velez who you may remember for her turn as Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta on the Showtime series Dexter. We get to see Miles in his own more familiar suit as well as trying out a hilarious imitation of the classic Spider-Man outfit and we get to see a more full reaction out of him as he encounters some of the other stars of this animated feature such as.

3. Spider Gwen and Friends

Here’s the big reveal: we get tons more footage of characters we’ve only heard about including a Spider-Man Noir voiced by none other than Nicolas Cage, we get splashes oven anime inspired Spider-Man with its own Mecha and a hilarious turn by comedian John Mulaney as Peter Porker the Spider-Ham. Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy comes across with the little screen time she gets with all the brash attitude that made her character a fan favorite and together this abridged Spider Crew has more than enough potential to make some of the most stunning and engaging set pieces that have been seen in recent memory. Spider-Ham seems to be played as a pitch perfect comic relief to the gravitas of a sulky Spider-Noir Nick Cage and if the comics are anything to go by then we may see the sparks fly between young Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales…so I guess spoiler alert, maybe?

4. The Villain(s) and the Plot

Based off of what we see in the trailer the Kingpin played by Liev Schreiber seems to have opened rifts to parallel dimensions using their version of the Large Hadron Collider, moving away from the story line in the comic book where multi-dimensional totem hunters tracked spider powered people by use of an inter-dimensional web of fate to which all spider-powered people are connected. I mean…whatever. One flimsy science excuse is just as good as another. But now that we know the idea is the spiders have to team up to defeat the Kingpin and figure out a way to get home you have to wonder what other surprises does Into the Spider-Verse have in store for us. Any single spider can defeat the Kingpin, so I have a hard time believing he’s the big bad. Eagle-eye viewers might catch glimpses of Tombstone as well as the versions of Scorpion

and the Green Goblin from the Ultimate Universe so they definitely are going to have a hand in the plot in some way. Maybe we might just get to see Morlun and his siblings from the comics as well, but even having seen all that is in the trailer, I still wonder if into the spider verse has any more tricks up his sleeve. What gigantic existential threat (besides the tearing apart of the universe due to the Kingpin’s experiment) will our heroes face? And speaking of questions…

5. Questions!!!!

Will Gwen and Miles get together?
Why was Spider-Ham moist in his intro scene?
How ridiculous will Nicolas Cage be in this film?
Are you actually going to make a Spider-Man team-up movie and not include Spider-Man 2099?

Well true Believers, all these questions and more will be answered in theaters on December 14th.

I know I can’t wait and I’m sure you can’t either.

Cameron Crump
cameron@comicattack.net

[signoff]

DC Animation’s “Batman: Ninja” Premiers at the Paisley Center in NYC

Cameron Crump

Anime

DC Comics

New Releases

News

Previews

Uncategorized

banner

Batman

Batman Ninja

Catwoman

DC Animation

Harley Quinn

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Joker

Nightwing

Penguin

Red Hood

Robin

Two Face

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n this era of Disney / Marvel Studios box office dominance with ultra successful live action films like black panther and Avengers Infinity War, people tend to forget that the first and most natural medium for superhero stories off the printed page has always been animation and in that realm of comic book cartoons there […]

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n this era of Disney / Marvel Studios box office dominance with ultra successful live action films like black panther and Avengers Infinity War, people tend to forget that the first and most natural medium for superhero stories off the printed page has always been animation and in that realm of comic book cartoons there is one undisputed king and that king is Warner Brothers and DC Animation. With absolute classics features “Justice League: The New Frontier” and “All-Star Superman” in addition to shows like Young Justice and the criminally underrated “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” no other Comics publisher or movie studio is even close to unseating DC from their throne atop superhero animation mountain.

That’s why it should be no surprise when DC gets when the creator of Afro-Samurai and a producer on “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” team up to produce “Batman: Ninja” the most over-the-top animated feature that Bat-fans are ever likely to see. “Batman: Ninja” was released through digital distribution on April 24 but it had its New York premiere at the Directors Guild of Association’s in Midtown Manhattan and it was packed to the brim with avant garde animators, voice acting royalty, super excited fans and hilarious German accents.

The English language cast features a number of notable voice acting stars such as the gorgeous Grey Griffin who is the voice behind Princess Azula in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and plays Catwoman in this new film, the incomparable Tara Strong who provides the voice for Harley Quinn who’s IMDB page is an amazing grab bag of DC heroes and villain roles, Roger Craig Smith who most people know as everyone’s favorite assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the “Assassin’s Creed” series makes his return to the Batman role after his previous successful take on the character in Batman: Arkham Origins, and Tony Hale putting on a command performance as the Joker who’s better known for his work on Netflix’s Arrested Development and HBO’s Veep.

We got the chance to speak to a few of them about their current and upcoming projects and here’s what they had to say:

Tara Strong – Harley Quinn

You’ve been involved with Batman since the first animated series. Through it’s transition, from Batman the Animated Series through The Batman, Brave and the Bold and now Batman Ninja, what do you think about the changes in style?

I think there’s room for all versions, as long as you’re true to the characters and the core of who they are it still works. It’s always fun and interesting to explore them in different worlds. This is certainly unique to anything we’ve seen before and it’s amazing. I still have a lot of love for the original which was really dark, I like my superheroes really dark and the original Batman was pretty meaningful and special but I still appreciate all the other versions too.

You are now playing Harley Quinn but were originally Batgirl. Which of the characters did you most enjoy doing?

Well, I’ve been Batgirl, Harley, Poison Ivy, Raven… and you think you may have an identity crisis?

Fair enough.

It’s always fun to play a bad girl so Harley’s fun to suit up but I have a special place in my heart for Batgirl because that was my first time in the DC universe, with Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy beside me and pinching myself.

Which elements of Harley do you have the most fun playing with? We’ve only seen a few clips of the film so far but it looks like a blast.

Oh my gosh! Every time I get to play Harley I’m happy, it’s like a way to take out my frustrations. Harley is therapy. I get in that booth and I’m screaming and swearing, and there’s no limit to how crazy she can get but like full of love and vulnerability. She’s a really interesting mix, she’s a crazy crazy girl.

Considering how many characters you’ve voiced in the DC universe is there anyone you haven’t done that you want to try?

No, I think I’ve really been very lucky. I mean ultimately I’m happy.

Grey Griffin – Catwoman

So you’re IMDB is lousy with voice acting credits, who has been the most important character for you to play as a voice actress?

Well, we’re at a Batman movie where I played Catwoman so I should say Catwoman but… I’d have to say Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender. She was a villain that I really enjoyed playing very much. I’m also working on this new Disney show where I play a character called Queen Moon called Star vs. the Forces of Evil and I love that role too but I also love Catwoman, meow (laughs).

What are some of your favorite bits that draw you to the catwoman role?

I love that Catwoman is just out for herself all the time. She’s not really a villain or a hero, she’s just on whichever sides winning. The same goes for this film. She’s not to be trusted and that’s a lot of fun to play.

Do you find any parts of yourself in your portrayal of Catwoman, something that you really attach yourself to in your performance?

Um…not really (laughs). I guess one time I didn’t get charged for a lipstick in Target and just left with it. Then i felt bad and tried to return it but the lady said no don’t worry about so I guess I’m a bit of a their (laughs). It was probably a $30 lipstick, but hell, I work hard and people don’t do things for me. I probably deserve that lipstick (laughs).

Do you have any other projects coming up that you’re really excited for that you might want to plug a little bit?

In the superhero realm i’m playing Wonder Woman again in the new DC Superhero Girls but it’s done by Lauren Faust, the woman who resurrected My Little Pony and she and her husband Craig McCracken worked on Wander Over Yonder and she’s just an incredible character designer and she made an incredible Wonder Woman…and I’m also working on Unikitty, I love Unikitty, I play Puppycorn so that’s fun.

Can you speak to the artistry of getting your voice to embody different facets of personality? How do you manifest different kinds of emotions and other things that we can attach very clearly to just by using your voice?

I guess I’ve always just done voices. I just picture myself as the person the voice just come out. So if I see myself as an old lady, then my physicality in the booth is just a little different and I come out like a little old lady [Editors’ Note – While answering this question she changed her voice to sound exactly like an old woman]. I don’t know. I begin to move my body differently and i just see my face as her and it just comes out. With the Catwoman voice I use to get myself in trouble [testing my voice out] because I would call people in the phone book and pretend to be some guys girlfriend. I would call when he wasn’t home and then go [using sultry voice] “Is Jeff there? And a woman would respond “No… who this?“ and then i’d go “Oh this is Stephanie, I just wanted to see if he was there.” Then they’d freak out and go “OH MY GOD WHO IS THIS?!” And then I would just hang up. I would of course feel bad for Jeff who’d probably come home and be in trouble. That’s just terrible (laughs).

Director: Jumpei Mizusaki, Writer: Kazuki Nakashima and Character Designer Takashi Okazaki

Batman and his allies have recently been re-imagined lately with more anime features. Did this inspire the creation of Batman Ninja and did you draw any influences from those designs?

Jumpei Mizusaki – Of course! I mean, it’s gotta all be related. In fact, I think it because of the success of those previous adaptations, which were actually from anime in japan that were already given to them, that this time they asked the Japanese team to completely come up with an original concept.

This movie is set in feudal Japan. How challenging was it to integrate things like mechs and the Batmobile and have it feel natural?

Kazuki Nakashima – No no, It was actually quite easy. We just blamed time travel. They just happened to bring the technology from the future with them. Except for the fact that they’d run out of fuel very quickly so they’d only have a very short time to use their tech.

What kind of impact does a character like Batman have in Japan?

Takashi Okazaki – I would say that Batman is actually very well known in Japan. Actually, in terms of American superheroes, Batman is either the top or at least one of the top two known characters in Japan. And the reason why is that about 40 or so years ago the Adam West Batman series was actually translated and aired in Japan and that wasn’t the only instance. We had the comics translated and the old animated series so I think Batman’s quite well known even among non-fans.

Among the Bat-Family who’s your particular favorite?

Takashi Okazaki – It has to be Batman. I’m sorry that’s a very boring answer but it has to be Batman. That may be cheating.

Jumpei Mizusaki -Damian and Barbara Gordon Batgirl

Kazuki Nakashima -Riddler. He seems to be a very easily animated character. Artistically, maybe easy to adapt into anime but considering he speaks in riddles there may be a lot lost in translation so it might be harder from a script point of view.

[signoff]

The REAL Reason Why Racists Love Captain America – The Correct Opinion

Cameron Crump

Cameron

Columns

Exclusives

Horror

Humor

Marvel

News

The Correct Opinion

banner

Black Panther

Captain America

Ta-Nehisi Coates

It’s not lost on as me as I think of the state of political discourse in America today that long before my time, a group of men got together to craft a document that holds as a self-evident truth, the notion that all men are created equal and that it would be the will of […]

It’s not lost on as me as I think of the state of political discourse in America today that long before my time, a group of men got together to craft a document that holds as a self-evident truth, the notion that all men are created equal and that it would be the will of those citizens born to each other as peers that would bear the burden to set the status quo in opposition to the grand historical tradition of the status quo being defined by the whims of a few greedy & powerful men. This new status quo created by the people for the people would be the guiding hand that would craft the rule of law for the beginnings of a nation that has been f****** me up my entire life in practice but loves me dearly in ideal.

Yet here we all are more present in the theoretical idea of “the future” than any other population of human beings that has ever been or may ever be and somehow we’ve come back around to a new small and vocal group of cultural misers belying their will as “the way the world is meant to be”. Whether it’s a comparative few shouting their bigotry into the echo chamber of the internet and moving metaphorical mountains, or its the quietly held prejudices that keep their roots in the hearts and actions of those in positions of authority, rationalized to the the people as their own will; Too often we find the privileged minority screaming at the tops of their lungs at the rising tide for raising every ship, as an unfair affront to the singularity of their greatness. An award-winning writer on a flagship title should not be news that elicits “controversy” from a company whose greatest writers and long standing figureheads have been accused of copping feels on non-consenting nurses in the old folks home. If the guy you put in charge of your company spent a portion of his career pretending to be an Asian man to write mediocre samurai stories and doesn’t apologize for it when the truth is finally revealed, and that doesn’t stir a huge reaction from the fan base, then I don’t see why the headline “Staff writer writes company character” should get so much more contention showered on it before anyone has even read the first page. Where is all this vitriol coming from? Coates is a well-received writer with a crazy art team backing him up (Alex Ross on covers and Leinil Yu as interior artist) who hasn’t had one page of his series published yet, so why all the hatred?

What’s that?
It’s basically that he’s a black guy?
That’s literally all there is to this?
Oh.

WAIT! From the Saturday morning cartoon style Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E to his more recent revitalization of Moon Knight and the Wildstorm universe, when Warren Ellis brings his unique Cinema feel and attention to plot and detail to a Marvel IP, he turns what would normally be a forgettable solo book in less capable hands into a character study inside the minds of Marvel’s finest heroes and villians. He’s basically the ranch dressing of comics: you put him on a title and you just know that the story is going to be amazing.

Since then the character has featured very prominently in the Civil War II story line and became apart of the new Secret Warriors team during the Secret Empire story line and while his redesign from pill-headed inhuman royalty to street-fighting, hand-wrapped hooded Nihilist has stayed largely intact, Ellis’s charaterization which made him so compelling has fallen to the wayside. So in honor of #ThrowbackThursday and me wanting to talk about the Karnak series WAY too late, here’s a list of

Top 5 Greatest Martial Artists in Marvel Comics.

Now, I know what you’re thinking and right away shut your dumb face.

Just because someone is a top tier combatant in the MCU, that does not make them a martial artist; being able to fight does not automatically make one a martial arts practitioner. To qualify for this list, the characters will have had to have been depicted embracing both the physical as well as the cultural, and spiritual aspects of the martial arts, that means fighters like Steve Rogers, Taskmaster, and Black Widow are gonna hang back for a different list.

Finally, people who’ve had their physical abilities enhanced from some mutation or other non-skill based means go to the back of the line, sorry Deadpool, White Tiger, and Mister X. It should be noted that this does not include the use of “chi” as it is depicted as a life force that anyone can harness with skill and experience.

5. Temujin
I’m going to go with a deep cut here at number 5 because I will always be more nerd than you and don’t you ever forget it. Temujin is the son of the Mandarin (and also the real name of conquer Genghis Khan; that’s a bonus history fact for you. I am dope beyond measure), and though the two are related in 616, they are not the same person. Sent away by his father to be raised in a monastery so that he could develop inner peace, eventually Temujin comes back to the West upon learning of his father’s death to personally deal with Iron Man. At which point in the comics, he has a one-on-one battle with the armored Avenger as he wields the Mandarin’s rings but takes them off to make it a fair fight. Using techniques and showing skills that are the trademarks of some others on this list, he defeats Iron Man with just his bare hands. He’s not higher on this list because he doesn’t have many appearances but he is held by Marvel continuity as being one of the greatest living martial artists in the MCU.

4. Stick

The man who taught Matt Murdock and Elektra how to fight, and the leader of the secret order of martial artists known as “The Chaste”, Stick was created by Frank Miller and first appeared in Daredevil #176, largely to explain where Daredevil got all his skills. Don’t be fooled by his 70’s janitor Vietnam vet looks and his blindness. He’s got a proximity sense that puts Daredevil’s radar sense to shame and skills enough to smack sense into Wolverine after he’s gone feral, plus he’s a total dick. Check out Scott Glenn’s performance on Netflix’s Daredevil Season 1 for pro tips on abusing handicapped orphans.

3. Iron Fist

The immortal title give to just about anyone who can beat a dragon to death with their bare hands, the Iron Fist is considered the ultimate weapon of the mystical city on K’un-L’un and bearers have accomplished amazing feats with little else than some jacked up chi and a lifetime of dedication. Sounds dope, right? Think you got what it takes to be an Immortal Weapon? Well all you got to do is wait for K’un-L’un to show up in this dimension (once every 10 years or so) then get there and after being accepted into their martial arts school, become top of your class and then you’ll earn the right to face the dragon, Sweet! Now once you got that done, all you gotta do is get this huge fucking dragon called “Shou-Lao the Undying” to come out of his cave and then cover a molten hot dragon-shaped hole located on the Shou-Lao’s… I’m gonna say chest…with some fleshy section of your own body, searing a dragon-shaped mark on themselves forever! After that all you gotta do is plunge your hands into the dragon’s molten heart and then BOOM superhuman enhanced Chi. Bare in mind that 99% of the people who attempt this die horrible agonizing deaths being eaten by a mystical fire lizard but don’t let that stop you.

(No, I am not cheating! I know what I said. Go and re-read the stipulations of this list. The Iron Fist can utilize momentary superhuman enhancement BUT the gaining of those enhancements is an ENTIRELY skill based achievement open to literally any person in the MCU. You don’t have to be born with it. You can’t be shitty your whole life and have it handed to you. It’s not a magic trick. You had to be amazing to even get them and afterwards you have to study to even know how to use them. In addition they can atrophy if you don’t use them for awhile and most Iron Fists only use their chi as a last resort against overwhelming odds, mostly relying on their martial arts skills and natural abilities in fights.)

So the only question is which one do I pick? Danny Rand? Orson Randall? Any of the much cooler Asian ones pictured here? The answer is: I pick the entire lineage. They are all awesome so go read Ed Brubaker’s run on Immortal Iron Fist and see what the hype is about.

2. Karnak
There’s always been a bit of confusion when it comes to my boy and Magister to the lnhuman royal family, Karnak Mander-Azur. The Inhuman royals are members of a race of people who grant their subjects enhancement as a part of their social system but the powers each person receives are a bit of a roll of the dice. Even the royal family themselves have abilities that reads like a list of superpowers that got left in the box once everybody else grabbed all the good ones. From murder-voice to Rapunzel-hair, the Inhumans sure do have…abilities and for extra credit they even roll with an large obese bulldog who has a tuning fork stuck in his fucking face because he’s got the most useful power: Teleportation. All and all they sound like a group of people who got their powers wishing on a cursed monkey paw. Then there is Karnak.

Karnak has no enhanced abilities whatsoever. His parents opted out of putting their son through the Terragenesis process that gives Inhumans their powers in favor of sending their son to a monastery where he studied martial arts and philosophy until he developed his most well-known skill: the ability to see and exploit the flaws in ALL things. Anyone he meets, anything he sees, any concept he has ever heard, he instantly and immediately knows how to touch it, talk to it, hit it, or even breathe on it in order to destroy it completely. That is fucking ridiculous.

Of course he can fight and that talent can make for some awesome moments in a panel but the scary reality of this dude is that he can do some Lex Luthor in Superman: Red Son shit and put a letter in your wife’s pocket that will shoot a duce on your dreams and have you broken, in tears, ending the fight before it ever starts. Karnak is a staggeringly bad-ass mofo. Check out Ellis’s Karnak: The Flaw In All Things TPB to learn more.

Now I wonder who number one could be…
“See, I knew it. guys I told you it’s…”

The Correct Opinion: Top 5 Reasons Why Batman Is Better than Iron Man

Cameron Crump

Cameron

Columns

DC Comics

Humor

Marvel

Opinion

The Correct Opinion

Top 10 Lists

banner

Batman

Cameron Crump

Iron Man

Hello and shut up! I do what I do not for praise or adoration but simply because you’re f****** wrong and you won’t shut up about it.
Now, since this is my inaugural article, you may be asking yourself, “Who is this guy and what makes him such an authority on comic books?” Well, the answer to the first question is shut the f*** up… while the answer to your second part is simple; I have a column on the internet.

You know they don’t give these out to just anybody, right?
Case in point; do you have a column on the internet?
No, you don’t. So I win. Hence the title.
That’s the kind of cutting insight and dick-hard logic that you can expect from The Correct Opinion in these coming…however long I decide to do these… so let’s get started with the first misconception I get to correct:

Top 5 Reasons Why Iron Man Is NOT Marvel’s Batman

Look, we all saw your SAT scores so we know analogies aren’t really your strong suit.
Let me help you out with one.

Iron Man ≠ Batman

“Wait what?” you’re saying to yourself while probably shoving some nondescript s***ty food into your stupid face, probably ham if I had to guess. “Of course Iron Man is Marvel’s Batman…they both fight crime, they’re both rich AF, both of their code names are a noun and a gender…”

…And I hear you. They both got that G.B.P.P (Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist) character set going for them but one of the first things you should know when you compare a superhero like Batman to a PR stunt like Iron Man is that…

5. Iron Man Doesn’t Actually Fight Crime

Whether you’re counting Lee and Kirby’s original origin story in Vietnam or Warren Ellis’s fantastic update, moving the setting to the Middle East, Iron Man’s focus has never been on street crime. He began in the 60’s as an anti-communist hero and an attempt by Stan Lee to actively troll his readers:

[quote]“…I gave myself a dare. It was the height of the Cold War. The readers, the young readers, if there was one thing they hated, it was war, it was the military….So I got a hero who represented that to the hundredth degree. He was a weapons manufacturer, he was providing weapons for the Army, he was rich, he was an industrialist….I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like…and shove him down their throats…”[/quote]

Lee wanted Iron Man to be something different, so where characters like Batman fought against systems wrought with corruption while simultaneously defending the streets of Gotham from the street-level criminal element, Iron Man ran a multi-billion dollar conglomerate that created weapons for the government: Iron Man is the system, earning his fortune from government contracts and reveling in the wealth they brought. Both Ellis’s update and Lee’s original put Tony Stark on the path to redemption from the harm caused by the source of his wealth after his life changing accident, but the way Stark does that is by magnanimously loaning out Iron Man who was acting as Tony Stark’s personal bodyguard to assist with the world-threatening dangers. You know how like when someone’s life is in danger and you loan them support so that they wont die, that super cool charity move that rich people do?

Meanwhile Batman is out there in the street beating wholesale ass completely for free. Saving old ladies and s***, then what’s the next thing he does? BOOM!!!!! He’s at a rich-ass dinner party, standing on the dinner table, putting out some f***er’s flambé saying “Your money don’t mean s***!”

At best, Iron Man is a really fancy emergency response system. At worst, he’s a friend who only helped you move because he wants to borrow your Xbox.

4. Iron Man Is Defined by His Gimmick. Batman Is Not.

That seems like a kind of “no duh” point, right? Tony Stark covers himself in armor and the name “Iron Man” reflects that. It’s there in the name.
“But Cam! Batman is also defined by bats!” you’re probably saying to yourself.

Is he, though?
When you think of Batman, what’s the first thing you think of?
World’s Greatest Detective, yes.
One of the DCU’s greatest fighters, sure.
Bitch-slapped the entire Justice League, absolutely.
Bruce Wayne was the orphan boy-king of Gotham who became the greatest protagonist in the history of fiction armed only with the biggest of big dick skill sets. His accomplishments alone are enough to humble all superheroes, street-level or otherwise, and out of all that prestige and accomplishment, how much did any of that have to do with f***ing bats?

The fact that Bruce Wayne’s thematic choice for superhero garb was bats might be the least memorable part about him. You could name him after any nocturnal animal you like and the result would be the same. Bad-ass, unfuckwithable, ninja detective with all the money.

Meanwhile, Iron Man outside the armor is still, as he told a pre-Hydra Captain America, the preeminent “Genius Billionaire Playboy Philanthropist”. You know what is conspicuously left out of that list of adjectives though? Superhero. Iron Man without his armor is just a very smart, very rich inventor guy with problems making and maintaining healthy personal relationships with people. He’s an okay fighter, dysfunctional boyfriend, and piss-poor CEO of his own company. Don’t believe me?

Go re-watch Iron Man 3 a.k.a Lethal Weapon 5 and tell me how much of a superhero movie that was.

Continued…

Represent & Make Room: The Story of FlameCon 2016

Cameron Crump

Cameron

Comic Con News

Comic Cons

Cosplay

DC Comics

Graphic Novels

Image

Indie

Interviews

News

Perfect Cruelty

Reviews

Uncategorized

banner

Bisexual

Comic-Con

Flame Con

Gay

Indie Comics

Lesbian

New York

Queer

Questioning

Transgender

Representation is a funny thing: it’s not a thing you think about at all until the world makes you. The world defines you by the incidental parts of your existence, the things you could not choose about who you are. You define yourself by what you love, what loves you back, what moves you and what you move in turn. Ultimately, you know what you are and you know what you are not, and if you look around you can see evidence that you are not alone, that who you are and what you love exist within the world in which you live.

Now imagine if that wasn’t true.

As human beings, part of how we know things are possible is we see them happen. It’s the literal job description of a “role model”. We see someone like us climb a mountain or run for President and it’s a signal to the rest of us that maybewe can do it to but imagine whenever you read your favorite books or go to the latest blockbuster, there isn’t anyone that bears any resemblance to you doing anything amazing ever. Maybe you love kung fu flicks. You watch them all the time and you’d love to do kung fu but in all the movies you’ve ever seen there is never anyone who moves or speaks or acts or looks like you. How do you then ever imagine yourself ever doing kung fu or even taking a kung fu class? Maybe you love art but in every gallery and museum you’ve ever seen, no one who looks like you or thinks about art the way you do has ever been portrayed in a work on exhibit anywhere. How do you then come to believe that the world of art has a place for you?

The reality is people don’t often go places where they don’t see themselves, whether it’s schools, neighborhoods, or careers. If everything in the world is telling you that the things you couldn’t choose about who you are, that what you love and what loves you back, that what moves you and what you move in turn is not found in the world as it is and as such has no place in the world, how do you find the peace that comes from the certainty that you are not alone and that who you are and what you love exist within the world in which you live? The answer is an age-old one: if people are not making room for you, not allowing you the space to be represented as a part of the word in which you live, then unapologetically and definitively, you make room.

Such is the defiant flag of starshine-glitter and rainbow brilliance that flew over Flame Con 2016 aka “FLAME CON 2: 2 FIERCE 2 FABULOUS”. Flame Con is a pop culture convention that focuses on representing and celebrating the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Queer communities and their place in the mediums of comics, cosplay, manga and general geek culture. This year the Con moved out of the ironically luxurious NYC staple The Grand Prospect Hall and into the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott, bringing with it an even greater sense of legitimacy and the added bonus of seeing the faces of the unsuspecting hotel guests as large groups of gender fluid cosplayers and hardcore lady nerds moved around and through their otherwise vanilla weekend in New York City.

Flame Con was hosted by GEEKS Out, a non-profit organization created in 2010 to give the LGBTQ community representation and a home at New York Comic Con. Having started out as one booth at NYCC, Flame Con in its second year exists as a statement that it is not enough to just have a quiet corner seat at the white male, hetero-normative table. The diverse and talented population of the Queer community deserves and most importantly is able to support their own table. This sentiment is reflected in the views of the various vendors, artists, and cosplayers present. Jenny Cunningham and Sam Kirk, creators of Quirklyn and Provoke Culture respectively, spoke with me about the struggles of finding a place within nerd culture not only as lesbians but as women of afro-latina/hispanic heritage. Jenny Cunningham, who is in the process of producing a web comic showing the world through her own unique lens, spoke about her history with nerd culture:

“I’ve been aware that there wasn’t a place for me in nerd culture my whole life. Whether it was because I was a woman or because I had leanings towards sexuality that weren’t cis normalized identities, I had messages all around me in mainstream media about what beauty looks like and I didn’t look like any of those images. In comic books that I read, I wanted to save the day too but there was no one who looked like me or my family or my friends who be saving the day [in comics].”

Standing beside her booth adorned with a large black banner with the words ‘The Lesbians are Coming’ emblazoned across it, Sam Kirk reflected on her projects and their ultimate aim:

“[With our work] we focus on saying, we do exist, we are here, we do matter.” The core notions of not only representation, but community outreach and support were at the heart of every piece of art and every organization on the Con floor.

Tara Avery of Prism Comics, a non-profit all-volunteer organization supporting LGBTQIA (Questioning, Intersex and Asexual)-friendly comic books, comics professionals, readers, and educators spoke with me about her organization’s “Queer Press Grant”, a $2000 grant awarded each spring to help an independent comics creator publish their work of interest to an LGBTQIA audience. “Sometimes you’re not really aware of how much representation matters until it’s you being represented after not being represented for so long.” One of Prism Comic’s aims with the Queer Press Grant is to get creators to reach out to people who may not even know they are being underrepresented and help some of the most marginalized among us see our place in the world.

“That’s one of main motivations…when you’re misrepresented it hurts but when you’re not represented at all and suddenly you find somebody they say ‘hey this is a book about a transgender character, this a book about a bisexual character’ when you think you were the only one who was like that, it can make all the difference in the world,” Avery explained.

More than any other ideological focus, the call of the convention was for its attendees to be the next generation of queer creators, to pick up their pens and sketchbooks and laptops and flood the culture with the voices of thousands of LGBTQ perspectives. Creators such as Steve Orlando, writer of Virgil for Image Comics as well as Batman, Supergirl, and Midnighter for DC, feel that what the Queer community needs is as many creator voices joining the chorus, adding their art to the collective consciousness:
“I think the biggest struggle is about volume in many ways. A book like Virgil or Midnighter, you can do them and your responsibility is to do something true and respectful of that person but when it comes to representation, there are as many faces in the Queer community…as the mainstream community, so you can’t do it all with one book. I think the inclination from corporate is ‘Oh you got a book now, the fight’s over.’ No, the fight has just begun because if you try to do everything with that one book then it will come off as pandering. The goal is to do holistic, 3-D representations and when you’re doing that the goal after that is to do more.”

Equal parts affinity play space and defiant act of independence, Flame Con strikes a perfect balance between self-expression, social justice, and superheroes. The attendees and the presenters stood united in a perfect notion of revolt from the mainstream. In a time when the mainstream has swallowed outcast, nerd and geek culture into its maw, making its stories into bubble gum shadow of what it had been, all for mass market edification, the last frontiers of individuality become the taboos that America still can’t stomach: Race, Gender and Sexuality. It’s in these niches where nerd culture remains pure, because despite every movie being of a superhero and so many shows being comic-inspired, if you are not straight and white and a dude, then odds are you don’t see anyone like you saving the day and you’re still the outcast.

That also mean that the marginalized are the last true nerds, still out on the fringes making the avant-garde art that shapes the world for everyone not born different enough to be original; telling the tales that change perspectives and not just reinforce them; being special in a world that has lost the meaning of the word to mass production. Flame Con reminds the rest of nerd-dom that representation matters more than mainstream acceptance, and in doing so, remains truer to its background, its history and its fans than any con in recent memory.

All Photo Credits: Kaos Blac

Stay Tooned Sundays: BATMAN: BAD BLOOD Premier at The Paley Center for Media in NY

Cameron Crump

Batman

Cameron

Columns

DC Comics

Interviews

Movies

News

Perfect Cruelty

Sci-Fi

Stay Tooned Sundays

banner

Batman: Bad Blood

Batwing

Batwoman

Damien

Nightwing

Paley Center for Media NY

Robin

Sean Maher

Yvonne Strahovski

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n a chilly Wednesday night in the heart of New York City, DC Animation premiered their first blockbuster offering of 2016 to an excited crowd of both lucky fans and eager press. With the coming schedule of big name comic films from not only Warner Bros. but Fox and Marvel Studios, the anticipation to see how this year in comic book adaptations would start was at a fever pitch. The crowd outside the Paley Center wanted to know what the tone would be for this new year in comic media. Are we in for another year of studio meddling and overwhelmingly meh features, or was 2015 a fluke and are we still in the golden age of comic cinema? If Tim Burton, Christopher Nolan and even Joel Schumacher have taught us anything, it’s this: as goes Batman, go all of comic features. With that firm certainty everyone took their seats and braced themselves for what would be one of the most ass-kicking outings the caped crusader has ever had. This year just might be okay after all.

Batman: Bad Blood is an action-packed beast of a feature. The fight scenes are as visceral as the animations are gorgeous and the cast of characters reads like a Bat fan’s wish list. This is not to say that Batman: Bad Blood is a perfect film. I would have appreciated a little more character development for some of the supporting cast and I’m still not totally on board with Jason O’Mara’s raspy Batman voice but if you are fan of the Bat Family then this is not a movie to be missed.

We got a chance to throw a couple of questions at Sean Maher and Yvonne Strahovski who provide the voices of Nightwing and Batwoman, respectively, and here’s what they had to say:

Yvonne Strahovski, The Voice of Batwoman

Comic Attack: Sean, you’ve been Nightwing for three movies now. Has your approach to how you portray the character changed over time?

Sean Maher: Well, I mean it changes with the tides of the script, certainly, and I try to do the best I can to have a fresh approach on him while at the same time taking inventory of where he is now.

Comic Attack: You’re pretty new to this franchise, Yvonne. What drew you to the role of Batwoman?

Yvonne Strahovski: It’s always about having a character that is different from what I’ve done before. Whether it’s people from different times or different cultures or that speak with a different accent, it’s nice when you have the chance to play those roles and I jump at those opportunities.

CA: You’ve also been in lots of nerd deep cuts from Mass Effect to Lego and now Batman. It seems like your career has been steeped in nerd and pop culture. Do you self-identify as a nerd?

Sean Maher, The Voice of Nightwing

Yvonne: I feel like an adopted nerd. From day one of me getting here from Australia I got thrown in and I’ve been along for the ride ever since. It’s been great and I feel like I couldn’t be part of a better community. The people are so embracing and they’re very specific, they know every one of your projects. It’s a wonderful world to be a part of.

CA: Do you guys read any comics in your free time?8

Sean: You know what? I don’t. I used to lie and say that I did but I don’t really have the time for it. I have two small children now and I can barely keep up with their TV and books. I do read some of the Serenity comics but not religiously.

CA: Here’s a question for the both of you: If you could have your choice, which superhero or heroine would you next like to play? Live action or voice.

Yvonne: A live-action Batwoman would be pretty nice — I mean what wouldn’t you want to do? They’re all amazing action heroes!

Travis Willingham, voice of The Heretic

Sean: I actually find myself more drawn to the villains. I had a blast playing Shrapnel on Arrow but I don’t know. I’ve been asked this question a few times and I never feel like I have a good answer. What do you think?

CA: Maxwell Lord definitely. I don’t wish this franchise on you but I think you would be an amazing Dr. Doom based on how you played reserved anger as Dr. Tam in Firefly.

Sean: Thank you.

CA: Yvonne, one of my favorite things that you’ve done was a rap battle as Daenerys Targaryen (which I think you won by the way). What’s the story behind that?

Yvonne: [Laughing] Well, my agent called me one day and told me about [Princess Rap Battles] and they were explaining it to me and within the first two minutes I was like “I’m in!” because it was silly and fun and I actually hadn’t watched Game of Thrones at that point so I ended up watching like six seasons in three weeks.

Jay Oliva, Director

CA: Last question. Superheroes generally fall into two categories; protect the innocent and punish the guilty. I know your characters Nightwing and

Batwoman walk a fine line between both but what about you guys? You get superpowers tomorrow, which side are you on?

Sean: That’s a good question. I would like to say I’d be more of a Superman, saving cats from trees type of character but… I think I’m gonna go with punish the guilty.

CA: Nothing wrong with that. There’s a lot of great heroes in that category.

Sean: Absolutely.

Yvonne: Protect the innocent I guess, but… you know, just quietly on the side, do some punish the guilty, unbeknownst to anyone else.

CA: Save some cats from some trees and later on you rough some people up.

Yvonne: On the sly. [Laughter] I don’t know.

CA: You don’t have to be malicious about it….

Yvonne: Well….
