Charismagic #4
Publisher: Aspen
Writer: Vince Hernandez
Artist: Khary Randolph
As we follow Hank and Sudana, we see how they are starting to form a relationship, and this seems to be the last thing you’d want during a crisis. Sparkles the cat adds that he needs to pee really bad, too, but once they reach their destination, they’re all gonna whiz themselves! They are trying to reach Kon (the magical ruler of Limbo), to get his assistance with stopping Samsun and his cronies. Little do they know, that before he came to Earth dimension, Samsun made a stop along the way…two guesses where he stopped first. Yep, you guessed it, Kon’s house. He and his band of outlaw witches jumped Kon while his guard was down, and they locked him up in his own prison. Meanwhile, Hector and Alle are struggling to stay alive in the Void Realm, but then they get help by striking a bargain with a powerful and creepy wizard that seems to have a grudge against Kon.
I have to admit that this book is like nothing I’ve read in a long time. I’ve tried to read other magical/mystical based books over the years, but most either fall flat on their face or just are a total rip off of something old school. Hernandez does a fine job of being influenced by other works, but totally having something all its own. I do get a vibe from the book that resembles Doctor Strange from back in the 1970s, and that, my friends, is an awesome feeling. Again, I can’t remember feeling this high about a book from this genre in quite a while.
Khary Randolph is one slick artist. He mixes everything together quite well, and makes a solid story shine even more. The humans, animals, and even magical entities are all spot on. I especially enjoy the darker scenes of his for some reason. I think it might be because they are slightly creepy, too. A little bit of the unknown is never a bad idea when it comes to a comic book. I’m loving all these covers, too! Aspen is second to none with variant covers in my opinion, and I’ve put a few below to whet your appetite! Rating 4/5
