“The Way Out,” Part 1 of 2.

It’s 1936 in Arrowhead, California. Pearl Jones is now Pearl Preston. She and her husband Henry have been living tucked away in a beautiful lake area home and enjoying peace and tranquility. Sure, as we witness their tender and comfortable everyday life, we want to break out in song with Queen’s Who Wants to Live Forever, but we keep it in and don’t go full geek. Never go full geek. Henry’s mortality is something they both secretly ponder themselves. Pearl is tempted to change that. Henry is tempted to ask her to change that.

The pause button is pushed on peace and tranquility. Henry and Pearl have run into some trouble of the fanged Euro Trash kind. Pearl vamps out. It’s every bit as sexy as the sunflower tattoo on her back.

The Euro Trash pack aren’t the only ones who want a piece of Pearl. Remember Hattie? She’s not dead. She’s pissed off. Chained, poked, and prodded by her Euro Trash captors to find a weakness in the American breed, she’s finally broke free. She’s also given her captor a new meaning to the phrase, “put a cork in it.” With Pearl on the brain, she becomes the walkin’ dudette. Next stop? Revenge.

I’m not quite sure if this is the third cycle or if it’s an interlude. What I am sure of is that with Mateus Santolouco’s art, the visuals on this series haven’t skipped a beat! Some of you may remember Santolouco from the first three pages of last issue, but not to worry, fang freaks. Rafael Albuquerque isn’t gone from the book. He’s just catching his breath. I like the Hattie curve ball that Snyder has thrown us, and I enjoyed the the peek into the Preston’s quiet lives. Almost a year in and American Vampire is still running strong. You would be foolish to not have this title on your pull list.

Billy, you’re getting ripped off! Cover is $24.99. That’s a steal right there. There aren’t any immediate plans to do it in paperback, unfortunately.
