Aprhodite IX #6
Publisher: Top Cow
Writer: Matt Hawkins
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Cover: Stjepan Sejic
A new arc begins as Hawkins and Sejic continue to evolve Top Cow’s famous butt kicking cyborg! She’s been freed from her former master’s control and things have become a bit more complicated for her. Though amidst all of the chaos Hawkins shows us that she’s quickly becoming at ease with herself and who she is becoming. There’s also quite a few surprises thrown into this issue as she comes face to face with another version of herself!
Aphrodite IX has been consistently getting better with each issue and now as the new arc begins this title feels different. This is not a bad thing as Aphrodite states that without being controlled she has a personality now. Something that is quite noticeable early on as you can see the difference in how Hawkins presents her as compared to how she came across in the earlier issues. As things progress there is nothing that is short of exciting that takes place in this issue. Hawkins is fleshing out a great world for us to enjoy while at the same time dropping little hints that show there’s a connection to the current Cyberforce title. However, he keeps Aphrodite IX accessible on it’s own so you’re not missing out on anything vital if you’re not reading Cyberforce (but you should be).
If you’re familiar with the artwork of Stjepan Sejic then you already know the guy makes comics look fantastic! With this issue he decided to change his style a bit and it fits the tone perfectly. From the tech and sci-fi eqipment to the giant lizards and dragons everything looks and feels darn near perfect from panel to panel. And speaking of his panels he continues to treat the breaks and borders as works of art themselves making them flow even better as part of the visual story.
Once you’ve finished the story Hawkins even throws in the “Science Class” section that adds some background information on certan story elements just like in Think Tank. What’s also great here is the fact that we have yet another kick ass female character from Top Cow that isn’t some hyper sexualized, scantly clad, pin-up distraction in her own title. We get a gritty heroine surrounded by an interesting supporting cast and a creative team that is delivering quality work. So if you haven’t done so yet, go and pick up this issue!
