Marvel Reviews: Indestructible Hulk #1

Indestructible Hulk #1
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu
Cover: Leinil Francis Yu

It’s a new day for Bruce Banner, and he’s determined to make the best of what his brilliance has to offer. While being hunted by S.H.I.E.L.D., he intercepts Maria Hill and puts an offer on the table she can’t refuse. What he’s proposing will benefit both parties involved and reinforce that he’s more than just the guy you won’t like when he’s angry.

What Mark Waid has done is give not only a credible reason for this relaunch, but an exciting premise set up in this issue. Whenever the focus is more on Banner, the stories seem much more interesting, and Waid lets him shine the entire issue. The banter between him and Hill throughout the issue is paced perfectly and shows just a bit of how smart this guy is. When the action kicks in the story is just put over the top, as he uses the huge amount of carnage and destruction as a great story moving tool. He also touches back on a past plot point that I’ve always been fond of, and that’s Bruce’s issues with Tony Stark. Usually all hero “Big Brains” in the Marvel Universe get along, though Bruce has been the black sheep for many years and he’s definitely got something to prove.

Yu takes full advantage of Waid’s script and pushes it to the next level with his artwork. His use of angles and panel breaks really adds to the intensity of the action, and even the calmer moments between Hill and Banner. Plus Yu’s artwork is always great to look at no matter what he’s drawing. There’s a constant flow from panel to panel that keeps the eye entertained from start to finish.

Indestructible Hulk #1 is a comfortable jumping on point for any reader whether you’re new to the Hulk mythos or well versed with the character. Waid and Yu deliver a first issue that delivers everything you’d want in a comic! It’s also worth staying on board for a while to see what happens with the jade giant, and to find out how he goes from incredible to indestructible!

I’m still torn about picking up this title, but it would mean dropping something else. Decisions, decisions.
