Alice and the Queen of hearts have their armies assembled, and are about to do battle. They exchange some pleasantries, and then all out war breaks out between them. At first, it seems like she doesn’t have a chance, but she’s learned a thing or two in her time in Wonderland, and she uses that to her advantage. As Alice and her army begin to win, the Jabberwocky tells his servant, Gravity, to enter the fray. She literally turns things upside down to try and stop Alice from winning, but Alice and her companions manage to defeat her, and then Alice makes her way towards the Jabberwocky for a final showdown! Will she get the part of her back that was sent back to the mortal plane, or will the Jabberwocky forever own her?
If you were hesitant (like I was) at jumping on for this series because you didn’t previously read any Wonderland books, then you’re missing out. Raven Gregory did a fine job with this series from all perspectives. We saw more action than you’d think was coming from a book like this, for sure. It was also an emotional roller coaster for Alice, which is something that you also might not have been expecting. The book actually had more of that angle than the action, really. We saw Alice enter Wonderland as a little girl, and then quickly mature into a beautiful woman. It was mentioned in this last book, that it’s impossible to form a timeline to Wonderland because time is irrelevant there. This made things seem slightly off kilter sometimes, but in the end, everything straightened itself out and made total sense. A new ongoing is coming this summer that is springing out from this series, and everyone should definitely get on board.
The artwork in these books has been nothing short of fantastic! Robert Gill showed that he is certainly a top level artist that can get it done. Jason Embury was the colorist, and his work added to those great pencils. Most of the time, you’ll find yourself marveling at the colors of the entire realm of Wonderland. Everything was bright and jumped right off of the pages. Zenescope recruits an army of talented people that do covers for them, and this last issue was no exception. The immensely talented Stjepan Sejic was on duty for this one, and he just proved once more why he’s one of the top artists in the biz. Alternate covers by talented people like Anthony Spay (below), Joe Pekar, Nei Ruffino, and Mike Debalfo, provide even more incentive to pick up this great series! Rating 4/5
