Amazing Spider-Man #682
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Cover: Stefano Caselli
It’s the beginning of the end as Doc Ock finally puts his plan into motion and the “Ends of the Earth” story line kicks off! A dying villain is seeking redemption by offering to help the world after showing them he can destroy it. However, Peter Parker sees something else in this “gesture,” and is preparing to find out what it is and stop his longtime foes, the Sinister Six.
Slott has been building up to this story line for quite some time, and the official start of it is moving in the right direction, like the great introduction which touches on the many inventions and costume upgrades Peter has been making. Slott also keeps reminding us just how great of a character Peter Parker is as we get very little Spider-Man in this story. Finally illustrating that he’s just as important as his alter ego. Then there’s the great subplot starting with Mayor Jameson trying to shut down Horizon Labs. After the death of his wife, Spider-Island, and his son almost dying, he’s pretty much had enough. Slott even throws in a character singing R.E.M.’s “End of the World,” which was a very nice touch. Though Spidey’s pep talk with the Avengers was the shining moment and a great way to end the issue.
What the fans haven’t had enough of, though, is the artwork from Stefano Caselli and Fran Martin Jr.’s colors! This is another in a very long line of fantastic looking issues. The characters are so expressive panel after panel, giving more weight to the visuals. Especially when Jameson is yelling at Max Modell, or the scene where Doc Ock has turned up the the heat causing the people all over the world to writhe in pain.
Since Octavius is on his last leg, there’s the hope that Slott will actually be able to let the character go out with a bang. Slott and Caselli have been consistently giving fans reasons to pick up this title and stay with it. It’s what Spider-Man fans want, and you should definitely be reading this and having fun!

My big question is what will happen to Doc Ock? They’re obviously gearing up for his death…but will Slott surprise us with something else?
I’m pretty sure Slott will slip in something else during Ends of the Earth. I’m also liking the fact that Spidey is an Avenger more and more since he’ll need some back up and it makes sense to have them appear in this arc. It’s also great that it’s a self contained story and not being spread out w/ a trillion tie ins lol
I’ll say it again, it’s a great year to be a Spidey fan. Happy 50th, webhead!
