B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth Russia #4
Publisher: Dark Horse
Writers: Mike Mignola & John Arcudi
Artist: Tyler Crook (cover by Dave Johnson)
If you want to know what it’s like to be one of the few people that understand what’s going on when the world is about to come to an end, then read this issue of B.P.R.D., immediately. After Johann’s revelation from his battle with the possessed Russian soldier in last issue, we see his plan to stop the beast that is underground hatching a plan to consume the planet. Kate isn’t too happy with Director Losif, but he tries his best to explain the plan that Johann and he have concocted. Let’s just say that throughout this issue you’ll see a zombie army, the full force of the Russian military, Johann and a death squad of Russian elite soldiers, and if that wasn’t enough, we’ll see a Russian drinking vodka…believe it or not!
This has to be my favorite mini-series of B.P.R.D. since The Dead Remembered. That story about Liz Sherman’s past was spectacular, and I didn’t think anything would come close to that so soon, but this one is definitely getting close. Mignola & Arcudi know how to get you emotionally attached to a story and the main players involved. By the end of this issue, I was literally biting my fingernails. I hope next issue doesn’t let up.

Tyler Crook is doing a great job with the artwork. There are some pretty funky looking scenes in this book with the zombies and the crazy beast at the bottom of the mine shaft. I especially like the way he portrays Johann when he’s in his spectral form. Kate’s facial expressions are really good, too. You don’t even have to read the word balloons to know what she’s thinking. The cover is awesome by Dave Johnson, as well. I have know idea what in the world it says (Russian?), but it looks pretty rad. Rating 4/5

I love the Cold War feeling this book has. Johan is right at home in this type of setting.
