T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents is back, and I must say I couldn’t be more excited about it. To start things off, there are a couple of things you should probably know. To start with, Nick Spencer’s original run, from here on out referred to as vol. 1, was absolutely brilliant. He takes the story of this team of unknowns and creates a masterful tale. It helped that the art was amazing, too. Back to the point, if you haven’t read it you probably should, no, definitely should. It’s a great book, but more importantly this run, referred to as vol. 2 from here on, is a direct continuation of that story. DC gives no indication of this, and if I was a new reader I’d be a little pissed, but this issue is not really a “#1” in the same sense the others have been. This isn’t really a jumping on point. If the #1 issues launch of September was likened to meeting a new friend, this issue is the return of a friend who recently went on vacation.
That being said, this issue was absolutely fantastic. Instead of wasting an issue on recapping what has already occurred, Spencer doesn’t miss a beat in continuing his story. The issue plays out on two fronts, with Toby and Colleen spending time together, and the rest of the team playing referee in Subterranea. Toby and Colleen’s scenes together are great. The two have fantastic chemistry and Spencer can make a simple conversation about movies between the two seem like so much more. The political troubles in Subterranea, which nicely parallels the ongoing protests throughout the globe in recent months, nicely sets up the tone and mood for the rest of the issue. Wes Craig’s art is a little tough to get used to. Having been accustomed to CAFU’s art, along with the other guests, Craig’s art comes off as having a less refined edge to it. His style actually works tremendously well in Subterranea, however, the scenes with Toby and Colleen come off a tad harsh. Just by this issue alone I can tell that this is going to be a mini-series you will not want to miss. Just make sure you go back and read vol. 1 first. 4.5/5
