Grimm Fairy Tales #63 – The Dream Eater Saga part 9
Publisher: Zenescope
Writer: Raven Gregory
Artist: Randy Valiente (cover by Ebas)
In the land of Myst, you have two beautiful women. Sela and Belinda, both of whom are different, but the same. Like two sides of a coin if you will. One thing they have in common for sure is The Dark One. He’s manipulated both of them, caused them both considerable pain, and that’s just scratching the surface. As we see these two mortal enemies clash once again, Belinda tells Sela that something has changed, and she needs her help. Sela of course initially thinks this is a plot, but then hears her out anyway. Before you know it, the two enemies must work together to defeat the Sea Witch, and then travel to Earth realm, where they must meet someone that desperately needs their help against an even bigger menace than the tentacled Sea Witch – The Dream Eater!
OK, well, this has been out for a while now, but don’t sleep on this series, because it’s still very cool and this book is a nice bridge to part 10 of this series. Not much beyond Sela and Belinda fighting, then becoming allies happens, but the last page does show an appearance of a character that might help turn the tables against the seemingly unbeatable Dream Eater. Raven Gregory knows these characters well, and does a fine job of letting new readers know about the tension between Sela and Belinda. Valiente does a more than serviceable job in the art department, too. I love his underwater scenes which aren’t the easiest thing to pull off in a comic book, either. The Sea Witch is really quite formidable looking, and the cover by Ebas is awesome! Rating 3.5/5
Grimm Fairy Tales #64 – The Dream Eater Saga part 10
Publisher: Zenescope
Writer: Raven Gregory
Artist: Carlos Granda (cover by Marat Mychaels)
After last issue’s events, Sela and Belinda find themselves in what appears to be a local tavern. They find out quickly, though, that it’s just an illusion cast by someone very powerful. This certain someone gives them a brief history lesson on the creation of the four realms and who has been manipulating things from the very beginning. They find out that these beings of higher power created the four realms, Myst, Oz, Wonderland, and Neverland, appointed one person each to govern them, and the Keepers designated Thane to watch over Oz, Blake to oversee Wonderland, The Shaman of Neverland, and Shang as the Guardian of Myst (recently deceased). Even with these protectors, the Keepers still wanted a fail-safe, so they created The Dream Eater. In a hasty move, Thane released the Dream Eater, and now everyone is in trouble. This Keeper also informs both girls that the people they held closest to their hearts are not dead! Both of them then depart for The Inferno to meet an old friend!
Another solid issue leading towards what will be an epic conclusion. Honestly, it’s gonna be difficult to wrap everything up in only two more issues, but I have faith in Raven Gregory and his abilities! This book saw another artist take over named Carlos Granda. He kept things rolling pretty well, and there was only one scene that was a little off in my opinion (page 19). This has been a breath of fresh air for me personally as far as comic books have been going. I was really getting burned out with the big events from Marvel, so these new characters and settings are the perfect switch for me. Honestly, I think they would be for anybody that’s caught up in that hype machine. Rating 4/5
