The cover of this issue says it all and at the same time doesn’t even come close to preparing you for what’s in these pages! This is the issue that changes the entire tone of Spider Island, and Dan Slott pulls it off effortlessly amongst all the chaos going on. The New Yorkers have mutated even further, and Jameson is one pissed off Mayor as things are looking more hopeless by the minute. Amid the appearances of various Avengers and X-Men, Slott has Jameson steal the show, and this has been a long time coming. Ever since the death of his wife, Jameson has thrown himself into his role as Mayor and whatever he’s been suppressing since then starts to come out here. From berating Reed Richards to his brief “team-up” with Spidey (where he schools the old pro in the use of his powers), it was nice to see Slott allow Jameson to cut loose here. What also starts off as par for the course in this series with its light humor and various comedic moments takes a real dark turn as the return of a certain villain sparks the “Oh (insert expletive here)!” moment of the book.
If you want to know what I think of Ramos’s artwork in this series, just check the previous reviews, because nothing has changed here. Save for the fact that I liked the change of the use of color and style during the flash back sequences of the Spider Queen. I’m sure if I were to nit pick there would be something that would annoy me, but Ramos continues to move the action well and is a great visual storyteller. Plus, that last page is just brutal! Delgado is still holding his own and is the major reason that flashback sequence worked out so well.
In the end we get another issue that proves why this event isn’t to be slept on, and surprisingly it’s got some of the better tie-ins, as well. Most of them are even touched on and referenced in this issue without it feeling like a cheap advertisement. Spider Island is the unexpected surprise event this year and you’ll do well to get caught up in its web!

Sounds good, but I’m not a big Ramos fan. The distorted looking faces just turn me off a little bit.
They’re “distorted” because they’re being turned into giant spiders! 🙂
I get what you’re saying man but I’ve liked his work ever since I saw Crimson those many years ago.
