“Sisters”: It was hinted at during the first arc that there were those in the Vatican who were not comfortable with Patience being in the role of Magdalena. We are even treated to a brief introduction to her possible replacement should she need to be removed. Well it looks as if it’s been decided that Patience needs to be removed, so Anneli is sent to retrieve the one thing that will solidify her status as Magdalena, and that’s the Spear of Destiny.
It’s no secret that The Magdalena is one of my favorite titles despite the fact that I was a serious skeptic when the series was announced. Marz continues to tell an intriguing story that’s just all sorts of fun while also being very smart, which is an ever present theme of his. It also seems like he’s sticking to making new readers comfortable regardless of the issue picked up, because the recap page in the beginning is great, and ties directly to the events in this issue. There is also yet another page that deals with the history of the Magdalena, however, he explores a different thread of it which keeps it fresh for a consistent reader and acclimates a potential new reader quite well. Best part of dialog in the issue was during Anneli’s comment to Patience about keeping the Spear of Destiny in the closet, along with few panels afterwards which set up the fight scene perfectly.
What can I say about Keu Cha’s artwork that hasn’t already been said? Seriously, the artwork in this issue kicks more ass than Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, and my mom by the third page! I like how he gives Anneli that cocky stare and pose when she confronts Patience in her hotel, along with his panel showing off the Garduna. Who I think deserves a decent mini-series at some point in the future, Mr. Marz, but I’ll leave that alone for now. Cha also does one stunning cover to say the least, and you can’t go wrong with snatching up Nelson Blake II and Dave McCaig’s cover, either.
With all of that said, The Magdalena is one more reason to collect comics if this is your kind of story. Even if it’s not the type you usually check out, I strongly suggest giving it a try at some point in the future. Great art combined with great writing, so how can you go wrong?
