NYCC 2023: Scavengers Reign Preview

In the realm of animated storytelling, “Scavengers Reign” emerged as a testament to the collaborative spirit and creative prowess of independent animators worldwide. Spearheaded by Joe Bennett and Charles Heuttner, the project was born from a fascination with the intricate workings of Rube Goldberg machines and their metaphorical resonance with nature’s own complex systems. This concept was adeptly translated into a narrative exploring the interconnected lives of castaway characters, each navigating their own set of challenges.

The creative ensemble behind “Scavengers Reign” is a tapestry of talent, with Joe Bennett serving as the Co-Creator and Executive Director, alongside Sean Buckelew and James Merrill as Executive Producers. The artistic vision was further honed under the supervision of Benjy Brooke and the artful direction of Charles Heuttner. Their efforts produced an eight-minute short that debuted on Toonami, following a successful pitch to Adult Swim in 2016.

At the heart of the animation lies a diverse group of independent animators hailing from various corners of the globe, including Mexico, Spain, Portugal, France, and Estonia. These artists were meticulously selected for their profound understanding of character dynamics, creature design, and the fluidity of motion—skills akin to those of a physicist. They embraced the full spectrum of production, from storyboard to final composition, imbuing the project with a directorial finesse that transcended geographical boundaries.

The narrative’s potency is amplified by its portrayal of unfamiliar and foreign landscapes, inviting viewers to experience the characters’ ordeals through a lens of otherworldliness. The writing and voice direction, helmed by Executive Producers James and Sean, infused the characters with a sense of authenticity and depth, further enriching the storytelling.

As the world grappled with the constraints of COVID-19, the team adapted seamlessly, their decentralized workflow mirroring the new normal of remote collaboration. This period also demanded a recalibration of traditional voice acting and animation techniques, urging the cast and crew to strive for a heightened level of naturalism in their performances.

Under the vigilant eye of Supervising Director Benjy Brooke, animators were encouraged to delve into the subtleties of human expression and movement, capturing the essence of organic interaction. This dedication to detail ensured that every frame of “Scavengers Reign” resonated with the raw, unfiltered emotion that lies at the core of compelling storytelling.

Even after only two episodes, “Scavengers Reign” is a starling vision of innovation within the animation industry, showcasing the boundless potential of a narrative enriched by global collaboration and a shared commitment to storytelling excellence. It is a vivid illustration of how a cohesive synergy, when nurtured by a team of passionate creators, can bring to life a world that captivates and inspires.
