Young Justice #1
Publisher: DC
Story: Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils: Patrick Gleason
Colors: Alejandro Sanchez
Letters: DC Lettering
Cover: Patrick Gleason
2019 is the year for Young Justice! The fan favorites have not only returned in animated form but also their long awaited return to comics is finally here! Courtesy of Brian Michael Bendis, Patrick Gleason, and Alejandro Sanchez the group is getting back together in an action-packed issue where the heroes are doing their best to halt an invasion who’s target is none other than, Superman. This is the issue to pick up whether you’ve been invested in these characters or if you’re coming into this brand new. Bendis makes sure that everyone gets their shine as each introduction builds on the previous one and he makes something that has become formulaic so much fun! Aside from the founding members it’s the additions of the newbies that will pique the interest of some of those longtime readers looking for something new to draw them in.
Gleason and Sanchez delight on every page and manage to ride the momentum of the narrative then taking it past the top with several double page spreads that show off several really big moments. So if you were on the fence then hop over and head out to your LCS and pick this one up. Young Justice #1 feels like the reason you got into comics when you were a kid if you’re not a kid already! 4/5
Deathstroke #39
Publisher: DC
Story: Christopher Priest
Pencils: Carlo Pagulayan & Fernando Pasarin
Inks: Jason Paz, Jordi Tarrogona, & Wade von Grawbadger
Colors: Jeromy Cox
Letters: Deron Bennett
Cover: Tyler Kirkham & Tomeu Morey
Once again Priest delivers another issue of Deathstroke that has cemented Slade as one of the top DC characters you should be reading. There’s so much going on here so if you haven’t been reading the series you might be lost as to what’s happening. However, for those who are caught up you’re drawn deeper into the manipulation of Slade by Hugo Strange. It’s well done and shows that in order to capture a man like him you need an antagonist capable of pulling it off and Priest makes it believable and one of the most layered and enjoyable stories coming out of DC Comics.
With the many people handling the visual storytelling there might be a worry that it wouldn’t be consistent. However, they all pull off a visually great looking issue from the dynamic action sequence of the villains attempting to save the day to the haunting moments in Arkham with Slade and Hugo Strange. Hands down, this is one title that needs to be on your pull list. 4/5
Adventures of Supersons #6
Publisher: DC
Story: Peter J. Tomasi
Pencils: Scott Godlewski
Colors: Protobunker
Letters: Rob Leigh
Cover: Dan Mora
We’re at the midpoint of this series and as much fun as it’s been this issue slows things down just a bit. Tomasi not only catches anyone up who’s missed a couple of issues but he also has Rex Luthor explain his plan yet again for the reader’s benefit. This is where the story takes a bit of a dip though the only strong point is relationship between Damian and Jon. Tomasi continues to make their interactions the high point of the issue and it saves the story from being quite boring. He also brings in Tommy Tomorrow who throws things out of whack for the kids. Godlewski and Protobunker do deliver one great looking issue and Tommy’s design is a pretty cool one with bits and pieces from other DC characters.
Overall this was a decent issue if you’re just coming into the series but for those who have been around since the beginning you’re only getting a few pages of something new here. 2.5/5
Justice League #15
Publisher: DC
Story: James Tynion IV & Scott Snyder
Pencils: Jim Cheung & Stephen Segovia
Colors: Tomeu Morey & Wil Quintana
Inks: Mark Morales & Stephen Segovia
Letters: Tom Napolitano
Cover: Jim Cheung & Tomeu Morey
Picking up from last issue, Tynion and Snyder keep the bulk of the story focused on Hawkgirl, John Stewart, and Martian Manhunter completing their investigation of Thanagar Prime. The writers are bringing the best out of all three and revealing some bomb worthy secrets along the way. The pacing of the story is just wonderful as each reveal just leads to something bigger and even more dire as you begin to finally take in the huge scope of the story they’re telling. My only complaint is with the Green Lantern Corps. Is there a time when they’re not after one of their own? You’d think that after all of the universe saving battles together they’d at least hear what’s going on first.
The entire art team is incredible here as we get a peek at the DC Trinity dealing with Starman in sequences that leap of the page thanks to Cheung’s art and Morey’s colors. Most of the issue’s art is from Segovia and Quintana who move the narrative along and make your stay on Thanagar Prime worth it. Tynion and Snyder are putting on a clinic on how to do these big superhero team books and it’s a shame if you’re not here for it! 4.5/5

Haven’t seen these in a while here but I’m glad they’re back!
Justice League is by far THE BEST DC book out right now. Just picked up Young Justice today so reading this gives me some hope.
