Amazon Prime Video: Good Omens Preview

Amazon Prime Video: Good Omens Preview

Fresh off the wildly successful American Gods adaptation, prolific author Neil Gaiman is working on yet another highly anticipated television project, this time for Amazon Prime Video. BBC Studios and Gaiman’s The Blank Corporation will be producing a 6 episode adaption of Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch; from the collaboration between Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Originally published in 1990, the occult comedy received a warm critical reception, with nominations for Best Fantasy Novel from the World Fantasy and Locus Awards in 1991.

Taking place in a fantastical universe where angels and demons coexist on Earth, odd couple and long time friends Aziraphale and Crowley must combine their unique talents and resources to prevent Armageddon. Amazon hasn’t been very forthcoming around the plot for the new series and how it will differ from that of the novel, but the original story revolves around the birth of the Antichrist ushering in the End Times. The supernatural protagonists must forestall the end of the world to maintain any semblance of the inconspicuous and quite comfortable lifestyles they’ve managed to carve out for themselves among the mortals.

At NYCC 2018 I had an opportunity to sit in on the Good Omens panel at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. Whoopi Goldberg moderated the group featuring co-creator and showrunner Neil Gaiman and director Douglas Mackinnon. Also in attendance were stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen accompanied by Jon Hamm and Miranda Richardson. Sheen stars as angel and apprehensive collaborator Aziraphale who must be convinced to aid Tennant’s crafty Crowley. Hamm and Richardson will portray the angel Gabriel and Madame Tracy, respectively, in the series.

During the panel the cast recounted their inspirations and favorite experiences while working to bring Good Omens to the screen. Hamm was particularly jocular in his first Comic Con appearance, showcasing his comedic timing and wit among the notable talents on stage. The audience was also treated to a teaser trailer debut after a spirited Q and A with the panelists. Aside from the two stars, in the teaser we can also catch glimpses of Crowley’s stylish and iconic Bentley, Aziraphale’s bookshop, a particular Hound of Hell named Dog, and what may or may not be an actual UFO.

Additionally, The NYCC 2018 Good Omens “The End is Nigh” Activation at the Javits Convention Center offered a very tangible introduction to Gaiman and Pratchett’s creation. Fans and inquisitive visitors we treated to a trip through Purgatory, a simulated elevator that would deliver the occupants to Heaven or Hell. While Heaven featured a scaled down replica of Aziraphales Bookshop, Hell presented a photo op with Crowley’s demonic Bentley.

The limited series will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in early 2019.
