Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 05/30/18

Abbott #5 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: WOW! This ended in such a fantastic way that all you can do is hope we get more later on!
Martin: 3/5 stars. I’ve enjoyed this series immensely, but the series finale is unfortunately not able to stick the landing. All the pieces are there, but the pacing is off and the conclusion just sort of fizzles out.

Amazing Spider-Man #800 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This was a roller coaster of Spidey action that hit all the right beats with the right characters that needed to be in here!

Bane Conquest #11 (DC)
NickZ: Not a bad series but it should have been over by like the sixth issue.

Barrier #5 (Image)
NickZ: This was a great science fiction series that ever so poignantly reminded us that no matter how different we may look, speak, excreta, deep down we are more similar than we think.

Batman Prelude to the Wedding Robin vs Ra’s Al Ghul #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5. Is this necessary? Not at all. However, it does include some interesting character development moments between Damian and Selina, and those are much more compelling than the Ra’s Al Ghul parts.
NickZ: I absolutely loved how Selina was able to connect with Damian through their mutual morally ambiguous natures. I need to see this relationship develop further.

Black Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Bryan Hill has probably mastered the power of the God FIst because he killed it in this issue! Oh, and I read all of Phooey’s dialogue in the voice of Scatman Crothers!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Way more fun than I was expecting, with the interesting choice of just including HKP as a talking dog in the DC universe with no explanation. Honestly, there are weirder things in the DCU already.

Descender #30 (Image)
NickZ: The reunion we have waited 30 issues to see, finally happens and it is everything you could have hoped for and more!

Doomsday Clock #5 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I have zero enthusiasm left in me about this series and dropped it this week. Good art though.
NickZ: Talk about your snore fest. This book is so slow moving and being delayed doesn’t help.
Martin: 4/5 stars. After the Rorschach backstory in issue #4, this gets the main story back on track & does a lot to propel the narrative forward, accompanied by fantastic art. This series’ main problem is the sporadic publishing schedule. Will read better as a trade.

Flash / Speed Buggy #1 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. An odd choice to focus on pre-New 52 Wally West instead of Barry. There’s a hint of an interesting idea in Speed Buggy’s origin, but it’s ruined with choices that are inconsistent with current Flash mythology. It’s like Lobdell doesn’t read Flash.

Green Arrow Annual #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The timing of this issue is all over the place, coinciding in the past with the 1st issue of Justice League: No Justice, and also with the 4th issue that came out this week. This new take on Ollie is good, and his banter with Batgirl is fun.

Green Lanterns Annual #1 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Andy Diggle has a spectacular grasp on Simon Baz & Jessica Cruz, and would be a perfect on-going writer for this book. The reveal of the Lost Lantern is really interesting – quite a surprise and very intriguing.

Harbinger Wars II #1 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: You do not mess with Livewire and this feels like it’s going to be one great follow-up!

Infinity Countdown Captain Marvel #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Captain Marvel uses the Reality Stone to have a group therapy session with varies versions of herself from the multiverse. Once again, there is a nice little DC easter egg.

Justice League: No Justice #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So the heroes save the day by screwing up the universe again? Okay. I’ll buy it.
Martin: 4/5 stars. The main story concludes well & includes some good moments for Green Arrow, but more interesting is the set-up & hints at future series, with Black Lightning & the Outisders, & the 3 new JL teams (Dark, Odyssey, “regular”).
NickZ: Between this and the Metal series, Snyder is literally changing the DC Universe is huge ways! I can’t wait to see what he does in his Justice League book!

Lazarus #28 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I always enjoy when a story can make me care about a character that I thought I despised, and show a different side. Jonah Carlyle has an almost Jamie Lannister-esque story arc over the past 2 issues which conclude in this set-up to the next arc.

The Man of Steel #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Okay I’m here for Rogol bringing a new world of pain to Superman so I’ll be here for a bit.
Martin: 4/5 stars. A strong addition to the Superman canon of stories, with great character development and some intriguing mysteries. As long as the art can keep consistent, this looks like a solid series. Read my full review here!
NickZ: Not as awful as I was anticipating after reading the DC Sampler, but not as incredible as it has been built up to.

Marvel 2 in One #6 (Marvel)
NickZ: This is one hell of a Fantastic Four story! Doom is amazing and I just have three words for you: Emma Frost Galactus!

Saga #52 (Image)
NickZ: Too much bad stuff is happening recently and with these new pairings it looks like things are about to get a whole lot worse for everyone!

Star Trek TNG Through the Mirror #5 (IDW)
NickZ: An excellent follow to the Mirror Broken series and now with one of the Mirror characters infiltrating our universe, I can’t wait to see what will happen in Terra Incognita!

Star Wars: Lando: Double or Nothing #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: L3 steals the show and now I want to see Solo and want more Lando in comics from this era.

Supersons / Dyno-mutt & Blue Falcon #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Having regular Supersons series writer on this helps, and Blue Falcon and Dyno-mutt integrate so easily into Batman’s world that is almost seems like they could exist there normally. The Damian/Jon interactions are great.
NickZ: It was great seeing the Super Sons in action again but I didn’t recognized this version of Blue Falcon and Dynomutt.

Sword of the Ages #4 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Gabriel Rodriguez was wrong for what happened to Luccan but damn if I don’t want more stories from this world of his!

X-Men Blue #28 (Marvel)
NickZ: Some major developments for Havok, Emma Frost, and Magneto! Looks like a the catalyst for many future stories.

X-Men Red Annual #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Jean Grey is still my least favorite character but this was a decent issue where she got the closure needed and we get to see more characters that are a lot cooler than she is.
NickZ: As if Jean reconnecting with Rachel, meeting Laura, and confronting Black Bolt wasn’t enough, that grave site scene gave me all the feels.
