Chirpin’ Wednesday Reviews 1/3/18

Adventure Time #72 (Boom!)
NickZ: Maggee’s dad throwing shade at the Candy Kingdom was hilarious!

Animosity: Evolution #3 (AfterShock)
Infinite Speech: Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Animosity: Evolution throws in some poison dart frog assassinations,

Astonishing X-Men #7 (Marvel)
NickZ: I am loving this book! The new “Xavier” is intriguing AF and I did not expect THAT character to make a return after such a long time! Well done Chales Soule and Phil Noto.

Batman #38 (DC)
Arnab: Tom King on Batman is lowkey overshadowing Snyder on Batman Metal, and that’s something I didn’t anyone could do.
Infinite Speech: Tom King hits Bruce pretty hard in this one and those last few panels were just dark!
Martin: 4/5 stars. A strong one-off story that appears to be introducing a new villain to the Bat mythos. After everything else that’s been happening in Batman recently, however, this issue comes across a bit jarring, as it does not draw upon those events at all.
NickZ: Batman realizes some uncomfortable truths about himself while investigating a twisted mirror version of his origin.

Batman and the Signal #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Duke Thomas makes his debut as The Signal and I already want more than this 3 issue mini series!
Martin: 4/5 stars. An intriguing character & idea with solid art, but feels a bit too rushed, especially given it’s only a 3-issue mini-series.
NickZ: A poorly defined purpose + very unclear abilities = A not so stellar first issue.

Batman White Knight #4 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Murphy’s art is a major selling point for this, but the story continues to be intriguing and throw in new surprises with each issue.
NickZ: I legit don’t know if this is the Joker’s greatest scheme, or if he is actually trying to suppress his own darkness and make amends for what he has done and THAT is what makes this book so damn intriguing!

Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is how you bring back a classic character! A strong story by the creator working with a stellar art team!

Deathstroke #27 (DC)
Infinite Speech: When you whip out and eat a burger while dodging gunfire you’re a badass. Oh and Deathstroke does some cool stuff too!

Green Arrow #36 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Ferreyra’s art is fantastic as always. Lots of good action, and all of the characters (and there are a lot of them) have something useful and interesting to do, without it feeling too packed.

Green Lanterns #38 (DC)
Martin: 2.5/5 stars. What make this book strong was the relationship & interaction with Simon & Jess. That takes a backseat in this issue to focus on some lackluster political issues and a war that’s not very interesting.

Guardians of the Galaxy #150 (Marvel)
NickZ: Normally the final issue of a book ties up loose ends but this one set up a whole mess of things that I can’t wait to see play out in other Marvel books. I’m going to miss this book tho, it was a lot of fun.

Hawkeye #14 (Marvel)
NickZ: Kate and Clint have the best, most unique mentor/mentee relationship in comics.

Iceman #9 (Marvel)
NickZ: Excuse me while I pick my jaw and the pieces of my broken heart up off the floor.

Iron Fist #76 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Sparrow and Sabertooth stole the show. Sparrow needs a mini series. Now.

Justice League #36 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. There’s a really strong core of an idea in this arc, with the League being held accountable, and someone setting out to frame Batman specifically, but the execution is off.

Noble #8 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Astrid and David are one deadly team and with this arc wrapped I can’t wait to see what Thomas has planned next!

Paper Girls #19 (Image)
NickZ: Kick-ass female protagonists! Giant fighting robots! 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s nostalgia! Warring time travelers from the future! This book has everything you want and then some!

Phoenix Resurrection #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: This series is hella mysterious but I am all about it! I can’t wait for the next issue!

Planet of the Apes: Ursus #1 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: David Walker just got me hooked on a character I never thought too much of before.

Rise of the Black Panther #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Evan Narcisse deserves all the praise for how good this issue is and T’Challa should take notes because he could have kept Storm if he was half as good as his dad.

Rogue & Gambit #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: It seems that Rogue and Gambit’s relationship issues are finally going to be addressed in a very real way. Gambit actually got pretty deep into his feels.

Secret Weapons #0 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: If you liked the main series then definitely pick this one up to see what was going on before things got worse.

Spider-Man #236 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Ganke still can’t keep a secret and a family reunion doesn’t go too well for Miles. Wonder where this is going to go when Bendis is gone.

Superman #38 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Super Sons event wraps fairly well and Tim Drake is still trash.
Martin: 4/5 stars. The end of the “Super Sons of Tomorrow” arc, and it’s a strong one, featuring the return of three beloved characters that haven’t been seen in Rebirth. The ending, & the complete shift in outlook of the “villain” character, comes a bit too quickly.
NickZ: I love seeing the Titans of tomorrow working with the Teen Titans of today. Also, Jon knocks out Damian with one punch and who doesn’t love to see that?

Transformers vs Visionaries #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Magdalene Visaggio brings the classic 80s Visionaries to face the Transformers in a crossover you should read if you’re a fan of either!

The Walking Dead #175 (Image)
NickZ: It takes a lot for the Walking Dead to shock me at this point but the ending to this issue was completely unexpected. I hope for once this is actually a good thing and they don’t end up having to fight yet another huge war.

X-Men Gold #19 (Marvel)
NickZ: Kurt gets injured and nearly dies but Kitty still pushes him to do more. Her leadership leaves much to be desired, where are Cyclops or Storm when you need them?

X-Men: Grand Design #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Ed Piskor is the storyteller we don’t deserve but lucky enough to have as he puts some of the best moments in X-Men history into this series!
