tec 43 Batman: Detective Comics #43

Sometimes you can have all the right ingredients for something great, but for whatever reason it just ends up feeling like something is missing. Brian Buccellato has all the elements of a great story here starting with Gordon being in danger out of his suit, to Bullock confronting his corrupt partner, leading up to the showdown with the Jokerbot. For all intents and purposes, it is still a strong issue. However, there is still something that isn’t quite clicking and it’s possibly the fact that Gordon being Batman still doesn’t feel right. Obviously that wasn’t a decision made in this book, however the decision to have a 40 plus individual randomly become Batman one day still affects the rest of the story. 3.5/5

midnighter 3Midnighter #3
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artists: ACO and Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Cover Artists: ACO and Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Publisher: DC

This series just keeps getting better and better. As a reader who has almost no history with this character, other than his guest appearances in Grayson, this series has been wonderfully delightful. With every issue we get a better and deeper insight into the character and his actions. And while he’s obviously not completely a superhero, he straddles the line in that same way that makes Catwoman such a compelling character. The issue also delves a bit deeper into the end of Midnighter and Apollo’s relationship. The breakup, which is clearly still affecting Midnighter, seems like it will continue to play a major role in the series, which means we’ll probably be seeing more of Apollo. Overall, with just three issues out, this book has tremendous potential. It has a great vibe, the book is fun to read, and the art is nice to look at, pretty much all you could ask for. 4/5
