In 2013, comics creator Jamal Igle set up a Kickstarter for a series called Molly Danger about a hero who is not what she seems. It was well received and made its goal, so thankfully the book got to come into existence. If you donated to the Kickstarter then you likely received a copy of this, if not, then you’ll have to pick up a copy. So is it worth it? Let’s find out!
This is a spoiler-free review, so I’ll just go over the basic plot. Molly Danger is a very powerful superhero who works with her own task force to deal with supervillains and other strange calamities. The thing is, some stuff isn’t adding up, and you, the reader, will feel and notice this. What’s going on with Molly’s retainers? Is her past what it’s claimed to be? What’s up with the villains she’s dealt with? It all sounds too perfect from the get go, so what’s going on?
The set up of mysteries is well placed, since you should have no reason to mistrust the narrative as this is an all new setting, but the characters make plenty of odd choices to show how this is a misstep they are setting up. Those with the most power seem to be hiding plenty of things, which includes Molly’s own side adventures. Book One is definitely setting things up for the rest of the series with plenty of questions that need answering.
The art is in the eyes. The eyes Igle and Castro draw and Fajardo Jr. colors express a lot. They are the focal point to figure out the characters’ motives. Characters side eye, they tear up, they show concern. Spend days just looking at the eyes. The rest of the art is incredible, but the subtlety in these eyes is remarkable. The art shows big action scenes as well as emotional ones, and these are exemplified by the eyes.
If you want a new superhero series that has a lot of mysteries, some fantastic art, and a young woman as the lead, then Molly Danger is pretty much built for you. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this series down the road, and hope this leads to more books down the line.
