The Goon: One for the Road

Been a fan of The Goon a long time, so when a one-shot comes out, I’m pretty much all over it. I’m behind with the ongoing, but love seeing the misadventures these characters get into. So what kind of hijinx have the Goon and Franky gotten into this time? Does it involve a lot of punching and booze? I bet so, but we should dive in to find out.
The cover and the first page of the story point out this is dedicated to artist Jack Davis. This really comes into play towards the end of the story, but I won’t spoil how. I’ll just say that it’s a welcome bit of chaos that was already a pretty wild night for one poor sailor.
The story is simple. A sailor has to find his buddy after getting mixed up in The Goon’s town’s weirdness. Sadly, to get out, he’s got to keep up with Franky and the Goon. This is like having to light a match to see your way out of a fireworks factory. So what starts simple enough just gets to be a bar fight pub crawl.
The art in this gets better as the book goes on. I am not going to spoil it, but it’s great and reminded me of some classic cartoons for what it does. You’ll see what I’m talking about if you check it out, almost like I planned it that way.
This is a fun book, and if you’re a fan of The Goon then it’s a highly recommended choice. If you aren’t a Goon fan but want to give the series a look, this is nice. Though it doesn’t go into much of the real meat of the ongoing, it does give you a look at the everyday goings on in the world. You get a bit of the feel for Franky and Goon, but it’s mostly just a fun little stand alone adventure. Check it out if you want to see a ton of cameos, as well.
