With the series ending at issue #29, it’s a race against time for Buddy whose new powers may be exactly what he needs to defeat Brother Blood. Jeff Lemire’s final arc starts off much like the rest of his series, action packed, emotionally charged, and filled with suspense. The battle for the red takes place on two fronts, with the forces of evil at a significant advantage on both ends. Lemire has done a tremendous job building up to this final arc and it is all paying off so well. Maxine’s struggle to save her brother is absolutely heartbreaking, but it’s also an excellent portrayal of a child who has lost her sibling. Buddy’s struggle to save his daughter and the red is the epitome of a superhero’s struggle between duty and family. Lemire has everything going for him in this final arc. Rafael Albuquerque’s art is perfect for this issue. His technique and style is perfectly matched with Lemire’s grim story. 4.5/5

The best thing about this Year One story has been watching all of Bruce’s current relationships develop; specifically, in this case, his relationships with Alfred and Gordon. Along with his group of Robins and former Robins, Alfred and Gordon are an integral part in why and how Batman has been so successful. Alfred is without a doubt Bruce’s most trusted confidant, and it’s a nice touch to witness how they grew to become so close. Likewise with Gordon, he is pretty much one of the reasons that Batman still even exists, and it is fascinating to witness how he’s changed and how he’s changed the Gotham PD over the years. Scott Snyder generally does an excellent job developing his villains, and he really has done an excellent job with the Riddler, but the way he develops and portrays relationships, regardless of what kind of relationship, has always been his strong point. 4.5/5
