Rat Queens #3
Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist: Roc Upchurch
Cover: Roc Upchurch
As the girls are searching for who it is that set them up on those murderous quests, Wiebe takes the time to start fleshing out our quartet of ass kickers. It’s a nice change of pace from the over the top action of the past two issues but don’t assume anything is lost because of this. Wiebe takes the time here to give the story some heart and with that a hint as to why some of the characters are the way they are. From Betty’s attempt to repair a relationship to Violet’s family issues everything we get in this issue is relevant in pushing the story forward and gives the reader even more reasons to like these characters. Though the stand out part of the issue would have to be Betty and Dee Dee’s meeting with the Merchant Guild. This was just a fun sequence and the payoff at the end was just perfect!
Roc continues to dominate and impress issue after issue and it’s the same here! From the actual character designs to the world they inhabit you’ll be looking at something that makes your eyes happy. One thing that always stands out about Roc’s style is his realistic approach to the female form. So, with a book that features four distinctly different types of women he makes sure that comes off in their appearance as well. Each member has their own look and body type that makes them stand out from the others. This is very refreshing since it’s too often we see a team of women in comics who (regardless of age or race) all have the exact same body type. And since it’s hinted that one of the characters may have had a beard at one point it’ll be great if we get a flashback scene to how she looked before hacking it off!
Rat Queens has been insanely fun since the first issue and is the perfect mix of everything that makes for a great series! Wiebe and Upchurch have done a great job introducing readers to the world of the Rat Queens and it should be one exciting experience as we go deeper into their world.
