It is this writer’s opinion that crossovers, like virtually all other marriages, are either a wonderful success or horrible nightmare; there is no middle ground. This marriage, however, between Dark Horse’s Criminal Macabre and IDW’s 30 Days of Night seems so glaringly evident, so smack-your-forehead-old-V-8-juice-TV-commercial-style obvious, that you wonder what the heck took so long for these two kindred spirits to finally tie the knot.

The two long-running horror series have sure as heck been dating, so to speak, long enough…well, at least living together in prolific wordsmith Steve Niles’s mind, that is. You see, Niles is the author of both Criminal Macabre and 30 Days of Night. And now, in the forthcoming Criminal Macabre: Final Night: The 30 Days Of Night Crossover #1, the man who brought these two into the world — 30 Days of Night in 2002 and Criminal Macabre in 1990 — and arranged this shotgun wedding says one of these soon-to-be-newlyweds will not survive this series.

This loser-leaves-town showdown will apparently contain within it a loser-leaves-town showdown between 30 Days of Night star Eben Olemaun, and Criminal Macabre star Cal McDonald.

Niles’s word balloons and compelling narrative voice, along with artist Christopher Mitten’s gritty, Hellboy-like drawing style, give Final Night a devilishly frightening and darkly funny aura.

The first issue of this four-issue mini-series is scheduled to hit the shelves — both virtual and actual — on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
