Dark Horse Reviews: Kull: The Hate Witch #3

Kull: The Hate Witch #3
Publisher: Dark Horse
Writer: David Lapham
Artist: Gabriel Guzman (covers by Fabio Cobiaco & Tom Fleming)

In issue #3, we see a young Kull and his friend Am-Ra witnessing a beautiful girl about to be burned at the stake. Rather than see her tortured, Kull throws a knife at her heart, killing her instantly. This infuriates the crowd, and they try to kill Kull, but he manages to run away. Next, the scene shifts to present day, where Kull is once again confronted by these same men and their offspring. Kull uses his great skills to try not to hurt them, but also not get killed himself. Everything seems to be leading to a bloodbath, but then Kull’s traveling companion, Meesha, tells them to stop attacking. After some quick words, Kull is welcomed to their camp for some food and drink. Kull then sits down for a long conversation with his old friend Am-Ra. The two talk of old times and what the future might hold. Am-Ra has become somewhat of a soothsayer and predicts that the witch Heka-la might have a trick or two up her old decrepit sleeve.

I won’t go any further, but rest assured that Am-Ra and his premonitions are starting to come to pass for one reason…or another. I can’t wait for the next and final issue of this series to drop. This has been a great book, and I have really been enjoying the artwork. The scenery especially has been top notch and the covers are nothing to sneeze at either. If you’re a fan of this genre, do yourself a favor and pick it up now! (Alternate cover by Fabio Cobiaco below.)

  1. Do you know if there will be another Kull series after this one wraps?

@Speech- As far as I know, there are no plans in the immediate future for new material. Reprints/collected editions yes, but nothing new. The series from 2008 looks very good (6 issue limited series), and I’m gonna pick that one up soon! 😀
