Hey people, welcome to another shot of R & R. I’ve only got one issue to review, but some comments about a couple others, so sit tight. The awesome issue this week is…

X-Force #19
Writer(s): Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost
Artist(s): Mike Choi & Sonia Oback

X-Force 19If you are not reading this title, do yourself a favor and get it! It is very fast paced and violent, but it also has good dialogue and makes you think too. The ongoing story in X-Force for a while now is that Bastion, the cyborg from Zero Tolerance, is digging up and reviving some of the X-Men’s old enemies in a plot to kill them. Well, to make a long story short, after X-23 kills the Leper Queen, she is abducted by H.A.M.M.E.R. and taken to a facility to be experimented on by her old nemesis Kimura; she is a chick who is impervious to physical harm even by adamantium. While this psycho is in the process of torturing Laura, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Morales, is being questioned in a room nearby. Morales, knowing she is going to be killed if she doesn’t cooperate, busts loose and frees X-23, but soon finds out Kimura is not to be messed with. This title has been off the charts since its relaunch, so if you like non-stop action and some blood and guts, this is the book for you. 4 out of 5

300px-Wolverine_Weapon_X_Vol_1_5_TextlessNext, I would just like to quickly comment on a couple of things. First, I’ve been buying Wolverine: Weapon X from the beginning, but it is soon getting dropped. The title isn’t terrible, but it’s not doing a whole lot either. It kind of just creeps along with some crazy violence that seems very forced at times. One example, in the latest issue (#5) we see a boat destroyed and a giant great white shark attack a couple of dudes floating around in the water. It looks cool, but it just feels like it’s very constrained to me. I think if they put more into the story and less into the mindless violence it would serve the title well.

Next a quick complaint about Dark Reign: The Hood and an older book, 300px-Fantastic_Four_Cosmic-Size_Special_Vol_1_1Cosmic Sized Fantastic Four. I’ve purchased a few of the mini series that have the Dark Reign banner, but have been disappointed by most of them. The Hood was starting to be a really good character in my opinion, but they have really been writing him crappy in this series, and I can’t figure out why they let this good personality go to waste. Lastly, I wanted to buy Cosmic Sized Fantastic Four a while back, but the $5 price tag really scared me off. Well, I just picked it up a week or so ago from my LCS in the seventy-five cent bin, and I think that price was spot on. I did find a couple of moments where I laughed, but other than that it was a complete waste.

Well that’s it for now, but I have quite a few books on my pile so I’ll see you soon! Until next time, keep trying to lift Thor’s hammer!

  1. I agree with you 100% about X-Force; it’s freaking awesome! Mike Choi is a regular at my store and he and Sonia are the coolest, most down to Earth duo in the biz.

I’ve only read the first issue of Weapon X and am sad to hear it may be losing steam. Especially because I think Jason Aaron is a kick ass writer and I like the character of Maverick.

@Andy-yeah Wolverine:Weapon X is definitely not grabbing my attention anymore. Hopefully Aaron can turn it around.
@Speech-I have yet to put down an issue and think it wasn’t great.
