santamovieIn 1985, Santa Claus: The Movie was created.  The film was directed by Jeannot Szwarc and chronicled Santa Claus’ origins.

In the 14th century, creatures called the Vendequm (also known as ‘elves’) approached Santa with the opportunity to help deliver presents to children.  Santa accepted the offer to live and work with the elves alongside his wife.  Later in the film, Patch, one of Santa’s elves, leaves the workshop to incorporate Santa’s toy making methods on his own.  He assists the toy making executive, B.Z., and is unaware of the consequences it has for Santa Claus.

Santa Claus: The Movie failed in America, but it was a successful film overseas.  During the film’s release, Marvel Comics Group released a comic adaptation of the movie.

Side Notes: The comic was an adaptation of the film Santa Claus: The Movie.  Marvel Super Special: Santa Claus: The Movie can be found online or at auction sites, like eBay.

The cover of the adaptation was drawn beautifully.  It reminded me of the movie posters from the 1940s.  However, the artwork inside the comic paled in comparison.

“Dudley Moore played an elf in a movie.”

Marvel Super Special: Santa Claus: The Movie was a nice story, but it felt weird to think of Santa Claus in the manner he was represented in the film.  I always have issues with how holidays are depicted in the media.  Despite my personal views, I appreciated how the film/adaptation explained Santa Claus’ back story.  I haven’t come across many stories depicting Santa as a real person before becoming a holiday figure.  It allows me to identify with him, since he has a human-like persona.

Marvel Super Special: Santa Clause: The Movie was an enjoyable adaptation.  Although the film didn’t do well in America, I think the movie is worthy to be watched during the holidays.
