Aspen Reviews: Executive Assistant: Iris # 0 Review

Publisher:  Aspen Comics
Writer:  David Wohl
Artist:  Eduardo Francisco
Cover (C): Joe Benitez & Peter Steigerwald

“Proper Incentive” : The story starts off in Russia, where Iris has been sent by her employer to make sure that his deal goes through. Providing her target with the…wait for it….”proper incentives” to reconsider backing out at the last minute several days earlier.

Being that this is basically an introductory issue we only get a brief glimpse into Iris’ world and her skills. Her employer, Mr. Ching, is a man of not only wealth but power, and feels that even illegal business needs to be conducted on the foundation of trust between the two parties. So when that trust is broken you can expect a visit from Iris, and by the time she leaves you’ll need to go back to the Henchman Wholesale store to fill the gaps in your protection.

The story had a pretty good balance of dialogue and action as the overlapping time frames took place.  It didn’t feel rushed and it’s not just a bunch of splash pages of action either. David Wohl even gives a little twist ending as Iris gets her employer’s point across to the Russian businessman.  Eduardo Francisco’s artwork is just fine, though it seems when Iris is in her formal attire she looks like a stick, but when she suits up for a mission she’s pretty curvy and very nice to look at!  It’s probably intentional and by no means a strike against the artwork itself.

The book does seem to be on the right path, and it’s a not just a  lot of skin and killing without any substance – it’s pretty smart.  Time will tell in the coming issues whether or not this creation of David Wohl’s and Michael Turner’s will just be another in the long line of sexy female assassins, or if she’ll stand out amongst her peers! But I’ll be along for the ride to find out!

Till next time!

The cover looks good. It reminds me of something from the Far East. I like Black Widow/espionage kinda stuff.
